Stinky Puppy Breath My puppy is almost 6 months and the new car smell (puppy breath) has been gone for about the last 3 weeks or so. Now, I'm not expecting him to have great smelling minty fresh breath or anything but his yawns & licks could seriously stop traffic. HELP!!!! Any suggestions to help improve his breath so that he isn't that offensive to people who want to adore him? I feed him Innova Puppy Food, I have done my best to brush his teeth as often as he will put up with it, I give him only the all natural healthy treats for potty training and such, I give him sterilized bones to chew on (which he loves), I've even tried the dental chews from the vet....I just don't want him to be so stinky. Any tricks or tips would be so greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help!:aimeeyork |
Bad breath during teething isn't unusual. He may have some retained baby teeth that haven't fallen out on their own and are starting to decay. Are you planning on having him neutered? Usually your vet will remove any retained baby teeth during the procedure. |
AH I know what you mean. Franklin's breath recently (in the past couple of days) has gotten horrible. I swear a fish died in there. I assume it's retained baby teeth and hopefully when he gets neutered in a couple weeks, it'll get better. |
Yep, right at about 6 months this happened to Edie as she was losing her baby teeth. The bad breath will go away. But it was TERRIBLE while it lasted. |

I sure appreciate the feedback from the 3 of you above & the fact that you all say practically the same thing gives me great hope that this won't last forever. I wondered if it had something to do with him losing his baby teeth. And yes, I had him neutered 2 weeks ago....stitches come out tomorrow. He had one little nutty buddy that didn't decend so it was a bit more elaborate of a neuter. I asked the vet about his teeth and if any of them needed to be pulled and she said no, everything looked fine. Since the neuter, he has lost 2 teeth that I know of. Again and again thank you. And, whew....:) |
You got some excellent advice and they are right on the money. We called Barkley "death breath" for several weeks. He was neutered at 6 months (9 months old now) so we put him under about a month ago and removed his upper canines and about 8 jaw teeth. I work in a vets office so we waited as long as we could but those eye teeth were not budging. Dr. Andy swears they were so long that he probably removed some brain matter. Now Barkley has an excuse if he fails puppy school.:) |

My Jacoby's breath smells horrible right now too! He is 7.5 months old....He has double rows of teeth on the top front...and some other puppy teeth that haven't fallen out! He is getting neutered in a week...the vet will remove his remaining puppy teeth. I have been brushing his teeth daily but it is not helping his fishy smelling breath! :eek: |
Yup! Meeko's breath is soo bad rite now! He's 6 months and has lost every tooth but his 4 canines. He's getting neutered this Fri and will have all 4 removed because, they're in there solid. I can't wait for his breath to be fresh again. It's gotten better since he lost the last premolar last week but, its still bad. Smells like a fish died in his mouth lol. And, its so hard to resist kisses from his cute lil face. |

He will be getting neutured in about 2 weeks. hes 7 months old. Im SO glad to hear the same thing from everyone!A by the way, HOW do you post and find threads? I know what you all mean! I'm also glad I found this thread. My little guy is 8 months old now and for the past month or two he has had HORRIBLE breath. He is so darn cute but nobody wants to get close to him because of his smell. He was neutered very young so they didn't take his teeth then. He has retained quite a few of them so he is getting them out tomorrow. I'm very nervous. :( Does anybody have any experience with how they react to this surgery? Will he be in a lot of pain afterwards? I worry that putting such a little guy out twice in 8 months will be dangerous. |
Try not to worry about Burton. (Love his name, that is my Dad's name :)). His story sounds just like my Barkley. He was put under twice and actually when they put them under to pull teeth it is a very, very mild sedative and they reverse so quickly you cannot even tell they have been under anesthesia. Barkley did just fine, came home ate (hard food) like he hadn't eaten in 3 days. I did not even give him the pain reliever. I work for a vet, have for 12 years, and we do this all the time. It WILL make his breath better, I promise - I know - we lived through the "death breath". Good luck and hugs. PS He will probably do better than you do.:D |
Thanks! Thanks so much for your response! I feel alot better about it now and can't wait to have his "good" puppy breath back. ;) Glad you like his name. Most people have never heard it before and think it's strange.:) It's the brand of my snowboard and I thought it was cute too. Thanks again! |
