Does "canned" food contain more FAT? Wondering if anyone knows if Wellness canned Venison & Sweet potato is High in fat? Both of my girls have high lipase and amylase values and the vet said LOW fat and High fiber. They are currently on Wellness wt mgt kibble -which is 6 % fat and 8 % fiber. They LOVE the ven & swt potato canned... but I want to be sure they aren't getting too much fat from that. They ONLY get it as a treat 2 times a day and I use it to give them their meds. The vet tech for the specialist that we see said they need moisture so it's good for them. But I dont know if she is correct on that? I do wet the food and let it soak overnight in water. So they get moisture that way. But I love to give them the wellness canned as treats. Really no more than about 1/2 tbl a day. But- I woudn't mind giving them more of it. Like about 1-1/2 tbl a day or even add to their food but I am nervous it it is too fattening. The can says 5%- I know all of that changes when you do the wet/dry ratio but I don't know how to calculate that. I do not know "if" the canned contains 20% total fat (someone at the pet store told me that) If that is the case... a whole can of wellness does not even get eaten. I pitch it after 5 days. It's the super small cans. I dont mind wasting some of it. I just have to be careful bc one of my girls itches from certain treats. So i cut them out completely and she is doing great. No more itching... so I want to be able to give her bigger chunks of the canned as a treat. I have really cut back with it for now until i know for sure. We really need to try to get these valued down other wise she will go back into full blown pancreatitis. and i don't want that. |
My Max had pancreatitis a little over a year ago when he was just about 2. He was a little overweight (like 1-2 lbs) and nobody could be sure if he'd gotten into something out in the yard where we were living or if it was just a dietary thing. I know most people detest Hill's foods, but my vet put him on Hill's W/D ....she said it didn't matter whether I fed him the dry or the canned but to only give him a specific amount each day (and if I wanted, I can mix it; which I give him the canned in the morning and evening and "snacks" as dry food in between meals)....he hasn't had one single problem since i started him on that (He also spent the weekend in the vet hospital NPO and on IV's for the weekend when the pancreatitis started), other than when I tried to switch him over to something "healthier". He likes the food, he's at a better weight (or he WAS before I got the starving foster child) and his poops are better too...smaller, harder (so it helps to clean the anal sacs). I have to say, that I am really happy with this food. I wouldn't rave about it, but it sure is good for Max! |
Wellness Canned Venison and Sweet Potato is about 23% protein on a dry matter basis. I would not feed a dog with pancreatitis that much fat. Ellie has had pancreatitis and she eats about 18% fat but it isn't really recurring. If it was severe, I'd probably want to stay at 14-16% or less (depending on my vet's recommendation). |
