Best way to deal with a wood-chewing Yorkie? I'm a new Yorkie mom, and my Peanut has been chewing on table legs and the entrance to her house. I've heard that there are sprays you can use to deter them from chewing. Do they work? Are some better (and/or safer) than others? I'm less concerned about my furniture and more concerned about my baby swallowing splinters. :( Thanks in advance! |
I would try bitter apple spray. I have used it on a few things like electrical cords and the coffee table legs. So far, I have never had a problem with chewing on them. I don't know if it's because of the spray or just good luck! BTW, Welcome to YT! |
The bitter apple spray does work. I think I have a bitter orange one in the cupboard now. There is one that is designed for outdoors too. Don't get that one by mistake. It's sooooo strong - you'll all have to move out. We have a chair that Reggie chewed on as a puppy 11 years ago. We just kept it and it's always reminded me of his puppy days. Coby is trying to take up where Reggie left off. I too worry more about the splinters than the chair. Although I told my husband that soon, Coby's going to make it all the way through and I'm gonna land on my butt one of these days!! |
Thank you! I will be sure to pick some up asap! :) |
Some dogs actually like the bitter apple spray. A long time breeder said to put clear stick deoderant on the areas that the dog chews. Dries clear and the dogs don't like it. Worked on one that was chewing my dry wall! |

Thanks, everyone! :) I've already picked up the bitter apple spray, so if that doesn't work, I will definitely give all your ideas a try. |
I heard from a fellow Yorkie lover that if you mix hot pepper powder with water and spritz it on that they will stop. However, it does stain so you can't use it on any thing that is light color. My furbaby will lick anything from hand lotions to vicks vapor rum. When I put a medicated cream on my forehead I have to keep him away from my face or he will lick it off. |
