| Kennel Cough? I think Ava might have Kennel Cough She keeps acting like something is stuck in her throat, like she has a hairball or something. Is that what KC is like? Her vet mentioned an issue that Yorkies have where their trachea collapses and they find it hard to breathe, does that sound like a hairball cough? Please help, do I need to take her to the vet for this? i have heard that KC is viral, so I have to let it run its course, right? TIA |

| The trachea collapse has been described as a goose honking kind of noise. My lab mix had kennel cough when I got her. She was a shelter puppy and it's usually rampant there. Anyway, she had very runny noise and every time she tried to breathe she had a deep cough, like human cold cough. Very raspy sounding, couldn't sleep from coughing so much, etc. I think the runny nose might distinguish it from the trachea collapse. Dean has been doing some of that reverse sneezing, and a lot of times it's when I am trying to take his cat bell collar off or put it on. They have super sensitive necks. When I groom I never touch his neck. I read this stuff online somewhere ... will try to find site. It gives instructions on how to make them breathe if they can't ... hold nose closed and try to make them swallow by rubbing on neck I think? Good luck, and if she's got KC, vet can give something to ease cough if it's really persistant (sp?)...and antibiotic. Found this: http://www.vetinfo.com/drevsnz.html The second question covers difference between reverse sneeze and tracheal collapse. If it gets worse, I would see the vet. This author contends the two are separate. Give Ava a kiss. (had her confused with MIA for a second... do you have recent pics of her; how old is she now?) | what i have found..... is that these things pretty much sound the same!!!!......... my toby had kennel cough (and we let it run its course because it was not serious and he didnt have a secondary infection) and we took him to a friend of mine that knows yorkies through and through and at first the diagnosis was kennel cough, then reverse sneeze, then possibly collapsing trachea, and then back to kennel cough again........ if you look up the definition and the symptoms on all these things, they all describe the same thing (someting caought in the throat, honking, ect....) scared the hell out of me...........toby started out doing it periodically then it got progressivly worse, then he stopped doign it competely ...... now hes done it once or twice in the past three days (i took him on a walk when it was raining ........ i know i know... bad me...... but he had fun and we dried him off really good and made him a nice warm spot by the fireplace) |
