Too thin!!! Zoe is just too thin and I have tried everything short of junk food to get her to put on weight. I put her on the raw diet and for the first 2 weeks she loved it and got up to 5lbs and was starting to look good - I think her ideal weight would be 5.25-5.5 lbs. After the 2 weeks she started turning her nose up at it. She won't eat her Royal Canin at all and the only thing she likes is the senior food my older dog is on which is not the right food for her. I'm at a loss. Does anyone have any suggestions about foods I can give her to help her put on weight without totally spoiling her or should I just stop worrying? HELP! |
Have you tried Merrick, they make both canned and dry. Milo loves it and it is highly rated. |
I'll be watching your thread. I have one who is too thin too. She eats the same as the rest....she's just skinny!!! I feed Merricks puppy and Chicken Soup for the puppy lovers soul. (adults and pups eat this) I'm about ready to go buy her a big mac! ;) Any tips for weight gain? |
You know, I've actually thought about the big mac thing too. :p Are Merricks and Chicken soup both sold at petsmart or do you have to buy online? |

I would keep her on the raw if she gained, just try another meat and rotate so she doees not get bored with what you are feeding her. |
I guess "too thin" is just as much of a problem as "overweight." I've read on some threads that Yorkies have many different body shapes smilar to humans. Could that be going on with your little furbaby? I was also wondering, do you think that picky eaters would stop eating to the point of wasting away? That would be scary if that is the case! Good luck in your quest for an answer. |
I get merric at this high end dog store 30 from my house. My dogs love it though so I think it's worth it. |

Steel cut oats have worked great for Ellie because they are very high in calories. Are you feeding canned food? If they don't have medical problems and are very underweight, I would feed them when they are hungry. Ellie's vet says when she is hungry, let her eat.:) Ellie was between a 2 and 3 on the body condition scale (5 is perfect and 10 is way too fat). She is probably up to a 3 or maybe 4 now, so she is gaining.:) |
What are steel cut oats? Is it a brand of food? |

My one girl, Bailey, is thin too.. I was recommended Satin Balls but she didn't like them.. Then I tried switching food (and she wouldn't touch it!).. I give her bunches of junk food .. doesn't work .. so I'm feeding her cottage cheese every other day and wet food.. then they have dry sitting out all day.. |

I ask as my girl was very picky, and stopped eating. I had to start adding people food and eventually she was just not interested in eating. This happened over a long period of time. I thought it was a "yorkie thing". I thought she was being picky. She got so thin you could start seeing bones. Took her to the vets several times, nearly ended up losing her as she had addisons disease. This is apparantly quite rare and many vets can easily miss it at first, but I just felt I needed to put this out there as an fyi and something to keep an eye out for if your dog losses weight or pretty much stops eating. |
I keep mine on Chicken soup Puppy and Taste of the Wild. None of my dogs are thin except one and he gets oatmeal , noodles, anything high calorie. I have only been able to find these dog foods at feed stores, like the kind you buy horse feed at. I think you can go online and find out who carries these in your area. |
skinny pup will tell you that it depends on body structure if they are thick boned and compact they look bigger longer in body means leaner look so she may not be underweight my cousin's boy was rail thin but the dr. said he was fine and she had a complete work up with heartworm and parasite testing and he has a clean bill of health.he was a very picky eater THEN she started using missing link and his appetite picked up and now at close to 2 he is finally filling out nicely. |
Well..... I'm not crazy about Science Diet but I know they have the Prescription Diet line and it probably works. Thats all the vet I used to work for sold. Puppy food might be another option since its really high in protein! My baby eats the Royal Canin Puppy #33. Just a thought! Hope you find a solution! ;) |
I think she does have that longer leaner look to her but you can feel her bones and see them too sometimes and that's why I think she's too thin. I just got a sample of chicken soup yesterday and so far, she seems to like it but she seems to get tired of the same thing but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.... |
You know Diesel is the very same way. When he is wet you can see a few bones. He has been on Innova and Canidae for a long time. Finally he turned his nose up at both of them. I went out and bought Chicken soup for adults day before yesterday. For the first time in a long time I actually saw him sit and eat! Normally he picks at his food. A bite here and a bite there. This seems to be working for him so we will see. I did go out and buy him some soft food ( Holistic Select by Eagle Pack) Normally soft food gives him the runs so I am going to do this VERY slowly and try it one more time. He loves to eat MY food. LOL Sometimes he will get chicken and rice and he just gobbles it down. I can't possible cook for him AND our German Shepherd. I would go broke just feeding our Shepherd food. |
