| Choking out of nowhere (not an emergency) Does anyone else's Yorkie do this? For the last couple weeks Ellie has been making a choking noise out of nowhere. It happens everyday or maybe every other and lasts for 3-5 seconds. It is not reverse sneezing or coughing. It is what she sounded like when she used to where a collar. I'm sure she's fine but this is not normal for her. Any ideas?

| Scooter was doing this and it turned out to be tonsillitis. I was afraid it might be collapsing trachea, and, if the antibiotics he has don't clear it up, the vet is going to x-ray to make sure. Hope your baby is OK. |

| Not sure, but my lil Henry started doing that yesterday, did it about 5 times today and yesterday as well, I'd like to know too, it sounds like a cough, or a mini choke...but not quite sure.

| Ut oh, we were just at the vet last night. If I would've know it could be tonsilitis, I would have mentioned it. Since it has been going on for a couple weeks now and she has no other symptoms, it probably isn't that (hopefully) but my concern is the beginning of collapsing trachea.

| sounds like a collapsed trachea (I think wearing collars are what cause this)...but it could be something else too. I would go to the vet to have her checked out. I hope everything turns out ok!!

| That was my concern too, originally, but, when the Vet was checking him, he opened Scooter's mouth and said that his tonsils were red and swollen, so we would try treating that first. Dummy me didn't even know dogs had tonsils! |

| I wish I knew how to look in a dog's throat. I think I'm about to learn.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | She hasn't had any intubations recently right, with all her vet stuff? I don't recall you mentioning it. Anywho, Marcel had some "choking" noises and even some vomiting - and it was totally due to his irritated throat (aka triggered gag reflex) for about a week following the intubation for his neuter. Has the vet fiddled with her throat at all?

LOL...that is one thing the vet hasn't touched. Ellie was intubated 3 and 1/2 months ago for her spay. She had a bit of coughing for a couple days after and then all was well. This started a couple-few weeks ago. It is so strange though because it is obviously not bothering her much. She hasn't done it since this morning.

| Take your yorkie for an X-Ray. Our yorkie Jingles, died on Feb.9,2008.He was only 5 years old. He was diagnosed with a collapsed trachea last year.He was on meds. The day he died he sneezed twice and I gave him his pill, but it didn't work. We brought him to the vet's office twice that day, but it didn't help. We miss him so much. Get x-rays!! |

| Well, I'm gonna tell you what happened to Penny. A week after she had her kennel cough vaccine. She started coughing at night(hairball kinda cough-dry cough) Mostly at night, rarely during the day,but sometimes. She has been nowhere but the vets. The night she got the vaccine the office was FULL. A few rescues were there. We sat with a few people and their dogs.(next to a lady and her new puppy. I wonder if her dog has it too?) Penny on my lap. Now, the shot takes 2 weeks to take effect. One week later she is coughing. Took her to the vets and ...KENNEL COUGH! Even the vet said she got it from their office. Because we took her nowhere else. Now, don't get me wrong I love and trust my vet. It is just something that happened. I couldn't avoid the office. She is now on antibiotics twice a day and the rest of her vaccines are on hold for 14 days at least. It was caught early and so far no other symptoms. Still eating and playing normal. Sorry this is so long but I got started and it almost became a rant!

| It is hard to say why it happened to her (from the vaccine or picked it up from the vets office). Sometimes the vaccine can give them a small case of kennel cough (I think this starts right after the vaccine is given though) and occasionally it is full blown. The bordatella intranasal vaccine is live, so it is possible for them to get the illness. Kennel cough can also lead to pneumonia, so I don't like the vaccine personally. As with all vaccines, there is a risk if you give it and a risk if you don't.
