That can be done by adding more bone.

I heard about the chicken and rice diet for dogs with diarrhea from a friend who was told to do this for diarrhea. It definitely works and I think, as omega says, the rice firms up the stools. How would you add bone to firm up the stools, tara? I would be interested to see how it works as a replacement for rice. I also wonder if the chicken does need to be cooked when they have diarrhea - I am presuming it is supposed to be easier to digest cooked?

Tootsy is having very strange looking poops today! I am at a loss to describe them - sort of darker than usual and crumbly (sorry to be gross!) They are definitely not normal. I don't know what she ate on the beach, but it must have been nasty! She is eating a little of the chicken and rice, but is not keen on it. She prefers chicken roasted and not steamed!! (miss fussy pants!) I assumed that I must steam it, as it's for her diarrhea, so I am supposing that it must be very plain? I will see how she goes and if she is not improving on a daily basis, I will have to go to the vet. My husband is always trying to stop me from rushing to the vet whenever there is even a slight problem! He feels I don't give her time to overcome things on her own. He has been right recently, when she actually did get over a few things on her own, for which I was planning to take her to the vet. He worries about medicating unnecessarily - especially antibiotics.

Just to clear something up, I'm Tara, Abbie's Mom is Ada

As for the bone, I don't know the biology involved, but I can guarantee, poops from consumed bone are wonderful. They don't smell, they are dry (or dry within a few hours) and if you find one outside, just step on it - it will blow away

It's one of my favorite "side effects" of raw!

As for "rushing" to the vet, I wish I had. The main reason I'm feeding raw is I don't want a repeat situation. Because in my opinion, I wrote too much off as typical behaviour, they'll get over it, and so on. Not to scare you (I'm sure Tootsy is fine) but I lost 2 dogs in less than a month due to kidney failure. I won't go into specifics (neither were yorkies and it takes some explanation) but I believe they died of unrelated causes. Had I been more vigilant and stubborn and ignored my hubby when he said just wait it out, would they still be here? I don't know, but I now get to play that game with myself for the rest of my life.

So, if she's refusing to eat or drink, go NOW. I'm sure you'd rather spend a few quid and be a worry wart then to save the money now, and potentially spend more down the road, or spend the same amount to hear nothing can be done

So sorry about the name mix-up!! I see your husband and mine think alike! It really isn't because of the cost of the vet though; he feels that if you go to the vet they will medicate when it may not be really necessary and this concerns him from a health perspective.

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your dogs - it must have been ghastly to lose two pets. I don't know how I would cope if I lost Tootsy so I cannot imagine how hard it was for you to lose both pets.

I will see how Tootsy is tomorrow and then decide whether to take her to the vet. She has eaten today. She has consumed about a cup of chicken and rice. She usually eats 2 cups! Thanks for the warning about waiting too long. I will definitely keep that in mind and not take chances.

Yep, the raw bone in the diet will make poop crumbly. If it's too crumbly, that means too much bone and not enough meat. You just have to find the balance for your own dog.

Naw, I think she is just trying to get her baby through this the best she knows how.

Cooked chicken or hamburger and rice seem to be a staple with dogs when they are sick - especially with runny poop.

I probably wouldn't give it to my dogs unless I absolutely had to for some reason, but if it does the trick, a couple days on it won't hurt the pup, right?

Right

Though my point is that switching back and forth from raw to cooked, could - in itself - be upsetting. RAW is more easily digestible.

Okay, took Tootsy to the vet today and she tells me Tootsy has colitis. She has given me tablets to give her twice a day for five days. She wants her to be kept off vegetables and just have chicken and rice. I am wondering if I should go back, and stick to, raw. I thought of giving her the raw chicken and bone and no rice. What do you think. I agree with abbie's mom, (safer to use this as I am getting the names mixed up!!) that going back and forth could upset her. Poor little thing has a very upset tummy today. Now, HOW do I get a tablet down her little throat?! Any ideas?

Thanks for the good wishes. Yes, I have been given a lot of advice from them and others - it's great and really helps when you are new to this. Changing to raw is scary for some reason. I must just stick it out with the raw diet and see if her tummy does settle.

Getting the pills down.... you could try to disguise it in a food she really likes. Or you could just put the pill a ways down her throat, keep her mouth closed with one hand and massage her throat gently with the other hand till she swallows it. You have to watch though, they are little stinkers about hiding the pills and spitting them out when you think they have swallowed them.
