Overweight 5 month old puppy Oh my goodness, so we brought home the new baby, he is about 2lbs overweight for his breed and size and frame. Seems the breeder didnt starve him but let him eat a lot and anything he wanted. Will be taking him to the vet on Monday for a full work thru, blood, stool and the works. Since I dont know if this weight has affected his wittle body, is it ok to cut back on what he is eating to get him unused to eating so much? I will be feeding him same as Bandit chicken rice, pasta and carrots mainly and some kibble mixed in |
Ok, I examined him again, he is about double what he should be for his size and age and that is in weight I cant even feel his bones they are totall ycovered in fat. I am concerned about health problems he may or could develop as a result. Has anyone bought an obese puppy before? I saw he was obese when I picked him up yesterday but I felt it could be dealt with with a diet recommended by the vet and proper exercise. Poor little fat boy, he can hardly move fast he walks like a rolly polley:eek: :( |
well congrats.im sure the vet will give you some good advice on how to slim him down.my layla is 5months also and she seems to be hungry all the time so i watch her very closely so she dont over eat.cant wait to see pics:) |
Congratulations on your new puppy! Is there such a thing as "puppy fat"? like "baby fat"? I'm sure your vet will let you know what to feed so that he'll slim down some. I know mine put Max on a lower calorie food and he only gets so much a day, but he was a year or a little older when she did that. Puppies I think need the right nutrients to grow properly, so I'm not sure what they do for them....Good luck! |
My pom was always round compared to yorkies. She was overweight from her medial conditions but even when she is at her ideal weight she looks huge due ot her barrel body and thick, thick coat. But hopefully with your loving care he will get to his proper weight. |

I am not sure if to panick or wait. His blood work came back problematic, his liver values were very very high, his white blood cells were all messed up and he was worm infested, poor little darling. I have to take him for one set of shots on Friday and then more blood work next week. WHAT DID THIS MAN FEED THIS BABY he is 3.5 kilos which is grossly double his weight by 100% he should be abouve 1.5 kilos for hte very maximum at this age and size. :mad: The vet couldnt say exactly why the values wre so high but we will repeat the blood work and then determine by testing. I told the m an about the liver values and you will be SHOCKED to hear what he told me.:mad: :mad: :thumbdown :thumbdown :thumbdown Bring back the dog and they will EUTHANIZE HIM WTF:mad: |
I don't think I would be feeding him pasta, pasta isn't good for them..carbs! |
A vet is NEVER supposed to say they will put the dog down, you have to ask first.. |

That's sad about him being so overweight, but I've seen it happen to other dogs as well. I'm sure with a good diet and exercise, he'll trim down in no time. I hope that the liver values are wrong, and if not, that it's something that can be remedied easily. He's a really cute little guy! Good luck. |
They miight have left food out for him all the time and he ate it all. Maybe they just filled the container again. You might have to pick up his bowl after he eats so he isn't grazzing all day long. I hope they get him all fixed and lined out. Might take some time for him to get straightened out. Keep working on him at least you have him and maybe he can have a healthy life after he gets straightened up. Why are they so fast to put dogs down. Do they not believe in love and hard work and miracles. |
Congrats on your new pup... Kinda curious though...Your mentioning his weight as if its a problem you didnt notice when you went to pick him up :confused: |
