Cataract Treatment for a Yorkie Hello, I found a 8 to 10 year old Yorkie at a local pound. The note regarding this sweet little Yorkie girl reports that she has a full cataract on one eye, with starts of a cataract on the other eye. What does this mean? Would this be a expensive medical bill to care for these cataracts. Do vets treat cataracts in animals? If untreated will this sweetie go blind? Are there alot of dogs out there that are blind. Thanks! |
My sisters 15 y/o yorkie has cataracts, I would say he is about 75% blind but he still manages to get around pretty well. Surgery is an option, from what I heard it can range from $700 - $1100 dependent where you go. Post-op treatment is usually some eye drops to keep the eye moist. If you do opt for surgery, its not totally necessary to do both eyes, they seem to manage well with just one good one. Otherwise if surgery is not an option, yes she will go blind but as long as that doesn't affect her quality of life she will be fine. |
I had a yorkie when I was younger that lived for 17 years. Around the age of 13 he went blind. Unfortunately it was inoperable. So he lived the remainder of his years completely blind. It never seemed to bother him much. Occasionally he would get spooked if someone picked him up without warning. In terms of getting around, he did very well. We even moved to a different house while he was blind and he was able to get around without a problem. |
