dry food/wet food? ive been giving my pup 7 mnths old 3.8 lbs royal canin pup 33 1/2 c day (1/4 in am and 1/4 in pm) shes my first dog and im not sure if just giving her dry food is good enough im sure its great for her teeth shall i mix some wet food in also at pm meal? and if so which wet foods are best? |
I only mix wet with the dry on occassion as a treat for Meka. I dont feed a lot of wet food because it changes her stool and its a bit more of an odor as well... the dry food helps her teeth and keeps her regular. Though there are lots of members who home cook meals for their pups and seem to be very happy doing that. I guess its whatever works best for you and your pup :) |
I think canned food is better for them than dry food. It isn't as overcooked and overprocessed and has the moisture in it that they need. And dry food doesn't really help much with keeping their teeth clean. It would be like us eating cookies and expecting our teeth to be clean. Dogs need their teeth brushed regularly to keep the plaque and tarter off their teeth. Good canned foods are Nature's Variety Instinct, Innova Evo, California Natural, Wellness, Merrick, Canidae, among others. I prefer Grain-free foods. |
would it be ok to mix some wet food w/her 1/4 c dry food for dinner(so shes actually getting both) i also feed her 1/4 c in the am. how much wet food tablespoon? |

on her the royal canine bag for her wt and age (7mnths) its a total of 1/2 c a day..do you split ur meals in am, pm too? i only do that since shes still a pup when can i reduce her meals to just 1x/day(dinner) and then it would be like this..1/4 c dry r.c. 1/8 c(2 tablespoons) of the wet foods you recommend i def wouldnt want to be overfeeding:rolleyes: |
I was always under the misconception that the dry was good for their teeth too, but after reading a lot of posts on the subject it seems that it isn't bad for them to have wet food too. |

Actually dry is better for them...Wet is mostly water. The dry will help keep their teeth clean. I feed Canidae dry/wet. I give mostly dry and put about 2 tbsp of wet in it then warm it in the micro and then mix it around. Because the girls don't eat all their food when I first put it down (and I work all day) I free feed. |
yes i actually feel more comfortable feeding 2x day and she is also.. so i will continue with royal canine pupp 33 dry 2x daily and ill mix some canidae wet in the pm meal..can you recommend which canidae wet to use..and how much dry would i give her in the am and also in the p.m with how much wet food sorry so many q  |

And the moisture in the food is very important. Yes, canned food has a lot of water in it, but that is a good thing. All animals need a certain amount of water intake per day. We get a lot of our water requirement from our food. Feeding a dry food means that they aren't getting any water through their diet...they have to drink a lot of water instead. Some dogs do not have a high thirst drive...feeding a wet food keeps them hydrated better. Also, canned food is less processed and just overall BETTER for them. With dry or canned food, it is important to not overfeed your dog. A dog can get overweight with either..it is up to the owner to regulate the amount their dog eats. |

Spike gets dry food every day, and wet food three times a week. He LOVES the wet food, and gobbles it up, so it's a bit of a treat for him. I've been told that dry food tends to be more nutritionally balanced than wet food, and is better for their teeth, but that wet food gives them another source of hydration, as it contains water. |
The 10 months I fed royal canine puppy. Then i switched to the rc yorkie. Now i feed honest kitchen once a day, which is dehydrated raw food. and i leave out Innova kibble incase she gets hungry. So she gets wet in the am and dry when she wants it. Her stools havent changed and i havent noticed an odor. I never gave treats her first year..but now make my own organic treats and give cottage cheese and plain yogurt. She is full of energy and loves her honest kitchen! |
Hi! I have never given any of my dogs canned dog food. My YT is on Eagle Pack holistic dry food 1/4 cup two times per day. I also include a heaping tablespoon of cooked chicken or meat and a teaspon of yogurt. Remi is 16 months and weighs 6.4 lbs. He is doing very well on this diet, which was given to me my his breeder. |
