Spray conditioner for dry winter hair I'm not sure If Lola has a silk or combo coat, but it's beautiful, strong, and usually doesn't knot. Until now at least, the heater must be drying her coat out because she's knotting like crazy and her hair is full of static after wearing clothes. We didn't have this problem last year because she was a greasy puppy. I'm looking for a spray conditioner to keep her hair hydrated between baths. I've been using my deep conditioner mixed with water, but it's not enough now. When she gets a bath I don't rinse the conditioner all the way out. I need something with a light fragrance, preferably fruity, and no silicones. |
Try coconut oil, both inside ie a tsp given in dog food and outside on the hair. Coat the oil right to the hair shafts and right to the tips, then I would use a wrapping jacket (silk or satin) over her hair before putting on wool sweaters, jackets, coats etc. Do this coating of coconut oil for two weeks or so. Then wash and condition as you regularly would. But it might come down to, if you allow her to sleep over warm air vents as my Razzman loves to do, you might need to trade off a bit of greasy hair with no tangles versus luscious soft hair with lots of matts n tangles. |
Thanks. Lola loves coconut oil, so she'll be happy to get it more often. I did use it on her coat to get the matts out one day when it was bad, she had been wearing a t shirt that day, I couldn't believe it knotted her like that. I gave her a bath the next day. Her hair feels really nice right now, but I'm sure it'll dry out soon. I'm planning to cut her hair shorter for the winter, but haven't had the energy. I've been looking for some sort of silk shirt for her but haven't found one, guess I'll have to make something. I have radiators, so there are no vents for her to lay on, I'm going to try putting a tray of water on them. |
We are suffering sudden dryness here too. Human and doggy hair is like straw. :( I think it is the lack of humidity, and our terrible water. I'm going to try different conditioner. Island Girl posted about using a Pantene deep conditioning mask on Sachi's beautiful coat: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...nditioner.html I may try that. |

I'm going to look at the Pantene and Garnier masks. |
I'm looking for something for in between baths, she's ok for a bit after a bath then dries out. I don't like to bathe her too often in the winter because the blow dryer freaks her out, she doesn't like loud noises, she even runs if you sneeze. This is the conditioner I've been using, in the bath and mixed with water for a spray Ion Extreme Moisture Creme Quote:
Sachi has beautiful hair, but I don't like Pantene, it's full of silicone and will dry the hair out long term. My hair is much better since quitting silicones. |

I put coconut oil on Max today because he needs a bath tomorrow. I'll see if it helps at all. Teddy's hair felt less like straw after a brief walk. I wonder if fresh, cool air can have that affect? We have been cooped up in the heated house because I was sick the last few days. The Ion Moisture Creme has alcohol as its second ingredient. That might be something to be concerned about in terms of drying. The third ingredient, glycerin, has mixed reputation for winter use: Why is Glycerin Bad for you in the Winter? - CurlTalk |

The coconut oil seems to have helped a little bit, it's been about a week and Lola's hair hasn't dried out yet (it still looks a little greasy, but that's preferable), I'm probably going to have to give her a bath twice a month to keep it under control. I think I'm going to try my hair stuff on her next (bed head moisture maniac), and I'll grease her up with the coconut oil the day before again. I took these pictures last night after brushing her, she's on my dining room (grooming) table in the first 2 pictures. Excuse the mess, it's Christmas related. This is also why I haven't cut her hair yet, she has pretty ombre hair. |
What a beauty that coat is! We just trimmed down for the winter and I'm a little depressed about it. The last time I did it I said I wouldn't do it again, lol. We are due for a coconut oil soak too! |
If you're looking for something in between baths, you could try Yorkie Splash & Shine's: "Yorkie Sheen" Detangler & Finishing Spray. You just shake it up, spray it on, and brush. Google: Yorkie Splash and Shine |
It's been about 2 weeks since using the coconut oil and Lola's hair is still pretty good, I may be able to get another week out of it before it's too dry. Quote:

It's too expensive to order without being able to smell it first and they won't give me an idea how much the shipping would be until they have my credit card info, I hate that. Also it has protein in it and too much protein means dry, brittle hair. It's ok once in awhile but not for a daily spray. |

Poor Teddy was so dry again today. I greased him up with coconut oil and he has been happy ever since. Not pretty, but he is comfortable. :) |
I use Chris Christianson coat dressing. It is fabulous! Spray some on your hand ..it is foamy ...and just lightly pet your baby with it. Calms down that frizz beautifully..especially great on head and and face...hate those fly away hairs in her eyes.... |
When Cali gets dry hair in the winter I put a few drops of Argon oil on mynfinger and lightly rub it on her coat. Sometimes I use Vellus static stabilizer. I have a friend who swears by Fur Butter. |
We did do a coconut oil soak tonight, I adore Argan oil for everything and am out rigt now- with Christmas right around the corner I will not be getting anymore til the new year! |

I will have to look at Fur Butter too. |

Our beautiful little dogs seem to enjoy looking scruffy. Lola likes to lick the oil off her hair. Quote:

Most argon oils are mostly fillers, like silicone and mineral oil. I think any shea butter product would work about the same as fur butter without the yucky rosemary and peppermint smell. |

Espree Aloe Hydrating Spray for dry dull winter h/air. Like a dorko butt, I 4got to order it when I recently made an order w/espree...Petco has it on sale right now for $6.59. |
I was getting ready to open a thread about this very subject. Glad I came across this one instead. I am in the process of letting Ruby's hair grow out, she's normally in a modified schnauzer cut but I have decided to let it go long. She's a cotton coat and ever since this summer I've been using dawn dish soap to battle fleas and now her hair is so very DRY. I am in need of something I can use in between bathes that wont get too greasy, gunky or have a bad smell when it dries. I want her hair to flow in the wind and look healthy. It also has to be something that both myself and my DH can handle when it comes to smells. We have Very Sensitive sinuses that just the slightest thing will give us sinus headaches. So smell is a huge factor. Scentless food scent something with no perfume would be the best option for our household. |

I'm still looking for something for between baths, but the coconut oil treatment and ion conditioner used in the bath and mixed with water to make a spray are helping. Be warned, if you use coconut oil it is strong smelling, but it doesn't bother me. I'm usually ok with food smells. The ion conditioner I use doesn't have much of a scent. I don't understand why they make dog products so strong smelling, I've never had a stinky dog. They may smell a little when they're really hot, but it's not a bad smell. I used to have to rebath my poodle when she got back from the groomers, she'd smell like they dumped a bottle of nasty powdery floral perfume on her. |
OK folks-I know I'm mixing species--but, Cowboy Magic Detangler & Shine. They have a whole line. I like the gel detangler-a dime size drop on my hand-rub together-& all over the Yorkie. Can be used in between baths. They have a spray. I have been grooming horses for 30 yrs & this is the most AMAZING stuff i've EVER seen. can't use it on them, cause it would be too expensive, but 12oz lasts 4ever for Lilly. |

Between the coconut oil and the cowboy magic one should work. Keeping my fingers crossed that it will. :D I will keep you all posted on what I find out. |

I don't like heavy scents on dogs . Dogs noses are sensitive to that perfume stuff. Is the spray and gel the same thing? And where do you get it? |
My nose cannot tolerate heavily scented products either. Chris Christensen Day to Day -- worked great -- but my doggies shut down and acted depressed until I washed them with something else. I tried it on them separately, Max first and Teddy 6 months later, and they had the same reaction. Strangely, the scent of pure coconut oil doesn't bother me or the dogs. |
FIRST OF ALL--I'm new, so don't hate. Not being rude with anyone. This is just something I know about--I mean I REALLY know about--at least try it--then call me a DODO bird on the thread for everyone to read: The "Cowboy Magic DODO bird" Mane & Tail is terrible compared to Cowboy Magic; it will create a build up on the hair. Not even in the same class. I'm telling you, you'll never use anything again. Same thing about Show Sheen--it seems to work great. But, it creates a laquer on the hair & will cause it to break. In getting horses "show ready" both of these are cheap & look great! Who's to know--right? But, are viewed as shortcuts that end up hurting the hair. |
