Dry, Dandruff Like Flakes I have some questions and hope someone on YT can help... My new foster, Buster, has dry flakes that reminds me of dandruff. I have used Minksheen as a shampoo on him and our groomer used some type of coconut shampoo, but he still has the flakes. (He has been with us for two weeks.) The shelter reported that he was covered in fleas, which he no longer has because of treatment. He was very neglected and filthy, when I brought him home. Anyway, do you think the flakes will go away as he eats better food? Does anyone have any recommendations for a shampoo to use? Would a coconut shampoo be the best? Thanks for your thoughts and help with this. Much appreciated! |
I would have his skin, if you have not already, by a vet. Make sure that it is not yeast or something else. I would use a herbal or oatmeal based shampoo. A better food always helps. What are you feeding him now? Also a supplement would help. Grizzly Salmon Oil All-Natural Dog Food Supplement is good. Good luck |
Lisa it's more than likely that whatever was used to treat the fleas caused the flakes. It sounds like his skin is super dry. I had a client dog here a month ago that had massive flakes. I used a spray mixture of 2 tbsp conditioner, 1 tbsp of Olive oil and distilled water to fill up the spray bottle. She did get oily after a couple days but then I washed her with a clarifying shampoo and repeated the process. By the time she went home all the flakes were gone and her skin is no longer dry. I would still take him to the vet to make sure there isn't anything wrong with him to cause this. |

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Buster will be going back to the vet in a couple of weeks and I will ask him about it. If worse comes to worse, I can always take him to Piccolo's vet dermatologist to figure out what is going on, especially because I think she is the greatest! |
Hi Lisa! Yeh, I've had several fosters who were covered in fleas. They almost always had the dandruff thing you describe after the fleas were gone. I gave them coconut oil on a teaspoon to lick (or in their food). I also rubbed a bit right on their skin. I give them a high quality, grain free kibble. You will be so pleased as you see the skin clear and the new coat come in shiny and healthy looking. It doesn't happen overnight, but you should see it improve each and every day. Best wishes to you and your new baby. It sounds like she is so blessed to be in your care. |

I have noticed Reeses has dry skin around the edges of her Jose around her thick whiskers. She rubs her nose in the sofa and on the rug a lot. I just recently noticed that those areas around her nose started to flake almost like dandruff. I was scared it was mange or distemper but she is up to date with all of those shots n hasn't been around any other dogs or animals. I use oatmeal shampoo and she eats all natural foods. She has had this though since she was a baby. Any suggestions?:aimeeyork |

Indigo has the same dry, flaky skin issue on her mid-to-lower back. We've had her 2 weeks now, rescued from a shelter. She, too, had some fleas which have now been treated, and was super filthy/stinky. The flaky area is dry, but her hair there seems a little oiler than the rest of her. I do see a few healing flea bites, and she will chew/lick that area still, so maybe the "oiliness" is just from her saliva. This area also seems to smell more than the rest of her. She was fed Halo at the shelter, and they sent us home with a bag of it, which is nice. I guess Halo donates all the shelter food. I've been mixing it increasingly with Organix Grain Free Small Breed, and supplementing with salmon oil and probiotics, so hopefully once we are all the way onto the Organix things will have cleared up. Now that her incision from being fixed is healing I am FINALLY okay to bathe her, which I've done once (but lots of wipes/sponge baths), and I'm resisting to urge to bathe her every evening when I groom her and see those flakes, because I don't want to overdry her skin. Her hair is so thin and silvery that I can see any red/irritated areas from across the room. |
Oh my that sounds awful heart breaking I hope things keep improving all the tips above were very helpful ... I have yet to get my boy to the vet also I'm resisting the urge to give him a bath untll he gets a proper check up so I know the feeling ... Good luck ! |
The something happend to Honey when I first got her. I think hers might have came from me bathing her every week. Now when I take her a bath I put a brop of baby oil in my hand and rub it all over her while she is wet then I blow dry her. I dont know if baby oil is good for dogs but I havent had the problem since I started using it and she hasnt showed any signs of harming her. |
