Traveling with my yorkie and doxie We are planning a family vaca in July to go to Beaver's Bend in OK and stay in a cabin there. The girls are both due for vaccines and I have not gotten them microchipped and am taking them in Wed for both, is there anything else I should talk to the vet about taking them on a trip. It's not that far, only like a 5 hour drive, but I am very nervous about it. I just want them to be safe and to have fun too! Should I get them lifejackets since we will be near a river and fishing ponds? |
One thing I will suggest is that you take along a jug of the water that they are drinking at home, enough for the whole time you will be gone. Also, if it is a wooded area that you are going to, ask the vet if they need Lyme's vaccine (if you don't already get that). Do you keep them on leashes or do you let them wonder freely? I keep mine on leashes all the time when they are outside, I feel in more control of where they are.....lifejackets might be good also as noted. |
They are most definitely on leashes, the little buggers like to explore a bit too much to trust them. We are going to try and work more on them with them staying with us, but they will definitely be leashed! |
I don't blame you, my girls do alright while we are in a doggie park, but I wouldn't trust them out of that setting. Let them see a cat & I know they'd run after it for sure - lol |
I really can't trust them at all, they love people, kitties, other dogs, you name it, they must go see! My Boston terrier I had would just walk right beside me no problems with her at all, but these two! Maybe when they get older, I hope... |
I haven't brought Genghis "camping", but I have brought him hiking on trails and one thing to be careful about is making sure you get all the thorns and pokey things out of their fur after or you're sure to get painful mattes. My husband and I spend a whole hour picking them out. We found over 40 spirally pokey things, and it was only about and hour and a half walk, and we were on a firetrail. I would bring a comb and a brush. Also I found it much easier to take out with shampoo. I would still take Genghis on hikes, cause he LOVES the outdoors. There is just a lot of maintenance when you get back. |
When we are going camping (we go for 2-3 weeks) we get our boys hair cut pretty short, for the exact reason described above - pokey things!!! In the mountains where we camp the pine trees shed these sticky things and you CANNOT get then out of yorkie hair. So, our boys have to have really short hair cuts when we go up there. |
