Urinary Tract Infection and swollen Bulbous glands HELP!!! Hi, I have a 2 year/ Male. In late May he was diagnosed with a minor Urinary Tract Infection. I kept him on the antibiotics for 1 week. (The prescribed amount of time) About 2 days after he came off of them he started bleeding a little bit from his penis. I immediately took him to the vet where they ran another Urinalysis. They put him on Amoxocillin for all of June. I have also noticed through out this time that the tip of his penis gets very swollen and a red color ( but no blood). He is on the prescribed food and just came off the antibiotics on Saturday. This morning I notices that the tip of his penis was swollen and red again ( I think it is the bulbous glands). The vet is terrible and will only tell me to bring him in for more tests to determine why the antibiotic did not work. Has anyone ever had this experience with a UTI, and the bulbous glands?? I can not afford to keep taking him back at $70-$200 a test...and they can not tell me why?? Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated! Especially to Capone as his poor little man-hood is having a tough time!! Thank you, Janine Last edited by capone17; 07-02-2007 at 06:16 AM.

Did he ever have a bile acid test done on him? Yorkies with MVD or liver shunts can start to have UTI infections from the toxins that are not removed by the compromised liver. I don't mean to scare you but was just concerned that there may be an underlying issue since the UTI's keep coming back.

Thank you for your suggestion! I am very thankful for any ideas. Yes, he has had that test and bloodwork ran for liver shunts ect... possible when he was younger and everything came back normal. Would it be something that could develope in time? He is 2 now.

If his bile acid test came out fine when he was tested (even as a pup) then the liver is probably not the issue. You might just have to push your vet a little about what he thinks might be causing the reoccurring condition. If he cannot give you any answers, then do some further research yourself or consider finding a new vet. What type of food is your dog on?

Well thank you for the info.. He was on Royal Canine Yorkshire Terrier But, the vet switched him to the Royal Canine Urinary S.O. I am not feeding him anything else other than the food and of course lots of fresh water. I think I might need to get another vet involved if I do not get answers soon. I am so worried...and running so low on funds to make him feel better. thank you again.

| Your baby could have crystals or stones...If he is bleeding out of his penis and is swollen, this is a very real possibility. You might want to ask your vet for an ultrasound. Some stones can only be seen on ultrasound, so even if your vet doesn't see stones on an x-ray does not mean that there aren't any...

Follow up on lil C Well....we had his Vet appt. Yesterday.....after reviewing the 2 urinalysis/blood tests...The UTI WAS in fact knocked out by the 1st time he was given antibiotics. The 2nd set of antibiotics was given to him as a "pre-caution". As far as his little man-hood getting stuck the vet told me to just keep a triple-antibiotic on hand for when it gets "stuck".....All in all it was good news...and I was very happy to schedule an Appt for him to just look at Capone and talk. If I had listened to the Techs...then I would have been paying for another test I did NOT need. Thank you everyone for their thoughts. Janine and Capone
