After dental work My pup had his 2 top baby canines pulled yesterday and still seems uncomfortable... They gave me pain medicine for him and I mixed the yesterday's one with his soft food but can I dissolve it in little water and squrit down his throat? (pills). He was so disoriented last night he was trying to poop in the middle of the kitchen, poor thing, I kept him in his pen overnight. Any help appreciated!! |
Personally, I wouldn't give him any more pain meds for having just two baby teeth pulled. Usually the vet gives them a shot of pain meds right after the surgery and then you can give them some meds the next morning. Just watch that he's healing and keep the food soft a few days. Again, this is JMO. |
did he just have two teeth pulled and nothing else? Usually they are fine the next day after surgery. He shouldn't be feeling mopey, maybe a little tired but definately not in a lot of pain to warrent a few days of pain meds. Morgan had 6 teeth pulled when she was spayed and a few hours after the procedure she was absolutely back to normal. I gave her pain meds the next day and that was it. some dogs have a lower tolerance for pain but for him to still be feeling out of it is unusual. oh and with pills its best NOT to crush them and mix them with water. mixing it with food is best. Next time see if they can give you liquid pain meds. |

Our little furbaby girl had 4 teeth pulled when she was spayed and had quite a bit of pain for the following 5 days. Many people mentioned that spaying didn't cause their dogs much pain, so my guess was that the teeth-pulling bothered her. The way the dr. said we could tell if she was in pain was whimpering and trembling and aggitation, like pacing around. She was doing all those things. To give our furbaby girl her pills I simply take a tiny dab of liverwurst and roll it around the pill like a tiny meatball. She loooooves liverwurst and since it is soft and like a paste, it allows her to swallow even larger pills right down without having to chew at all. She never complains. In fact, when we open her pill bottle, she's johnny on the spot just waiting for her "liverwurst treat." |
Usually the dog is not itself for at least 24 hours after being put under. Last time Lacy was put under, she stayed in her crate until the next morning (with two potty breaks in there). She mostly slept the whole time. The anaesthesia can take about 24 hours to completely wear off. I saw that you posted really early this morning, and I think it's completely normal that your dog wasn't competely back to normal by then. He should though be feeling more like himself tonight and definitely in the morning. |
Hey everyone, thanks for the input, he's back to normal as of today, still was a little mopey and seemed tired on friday. I'm glad we have that done :) . |

Good to hear the update...hope he continues to improve!! |
Fancy had two baby canines removed. Dropped her off at 7:45 am, picked her up at 2:30. No problems, she was back to normal and had no problems eating or playing. My feeling is it depends a lot on the amount of anesthesia they are given. |
Spike was on a liquid pain killer for five days after he had his teeth removed and his neuter. They gave me five doses in five syringes, that I could just squirt on his wet food. He was back to normal the day after his surgery, but I still gave him the full course of pain killers. Who am I to second guess my vet? |

This is jmo but I think he was over medicated if he was given 5 days of pain meds for teeth being removed and a neuter. The vet gives the dog a shot of antibiotic and pain meds after the surgery and some vet's like to continue with and antibiotic but 5 days worth of pain meds seems a little bit much. Your paying the bill, it's your dog, second guess your vet. Your entitled. Again, JMO. Stay well. |
