Bloody Diarrhea Please Help My Lil' Girl had a formed bowel movement followed by loose stool with mucous and about a 1/2 teaspoon of red blood. I took her and the stool sample to a vet, not her vet and he said she had hookworms. They gave her a yellow dewormer and the antibiotic Clindamycin. She delivered puppies 5 months ago and she was worm free. The same vet said the puppies had hookworms at 12 weeks and treated them with one dose of this yellow dewormer. They were very healthy and did not appear sick at all. I called the emergency vet tech tonight regarding giving Lil' Girl tagamet for her tummy and they told me that hookworms are treated with panacur which is a white suspension not yellow. They suggested that I call a different vet in the AM. I am freaking out because I know hookworms can be contagious to humans as well as my other dogs. Does anyone know what color the dewormer is for hookworms? I kept one of her puppies and she just had a loose stool, but she was given the yellow puppy dewormer yesterday by our vet. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. |
Will anybody answer me? I have no luck posting in this forum. |
sorry I am no help but hopefully someone with experience will answer you. Did you do a search to see if there are aby other threads about this yet? Good luck. It is 10:30 here so alot later in other parts but hopefully someone is still up and can answer. |
Thanks for the response Thanks, I did not even realize the time. I hope someone that knows more than I will reply. |
Panacur for hookworms & round worms; Drontral Plus for tapeworms and all worms. Don't panic. Google for more information, and I hate fleas and worms but manage to put up with the constant reminders that we live in a world with dogs. The Panacur is usually given in a liquid form which is placed in syringes and takes about five. Drontral Plus is one pill depending on size of pup. It usually takes two doses of Panacur to erradicate the worms; Drontral Plus is sufficient in one dose. In all of the years that I have looked at stools and taken in samples for the vet, they have never found worms but I have on close inspection of their "poopies". Ick but they can be gone but will reappear. My routine is to worm every six months. Good luck. |
PS I would be suspicious that if the pups had worms, Momma had them also. Your vet will probably want a stool sample (look closely and you will probably either see a segment (tapeworm) or whipworms, hookworms look like spaghetti. |
Thanks So Much I feel so sorry for my Lil' Girl. The puppies never showed any sign of worms so I thought the vet tech must have been seeing rice cereal grains under the microscope or that the slide had been reused. I am going to take her to our vet in the AM. Thank you again. |
Also, the worms upset their stomach and usually that is the reason for the blood if the diagnosis is those nasty critters. If they put her on Panacur, dispense the syringe slowly. I made the mistake of pressing the plunger rapidly, and poor Charlie began to gag. Glad you are going to vet and the right medication will fix her up. Take care. |
Strongid For Hookworms??? Has anyone ever heard of strongid for treatment of hookworms? |
Hookworm med. Hi, The Medicine called Nemex2 is the recommended thing for hookworm. It is Yellow liquid. It must be given a second time within 14 days before the eggs hatch out or they will produce more. Hookworm can be caught from the soil if you go barefoot thru fecus material in the soil or if you ingest it on a toy etc. That is the only way you can get it. Hard to believe a vet tech would say go to another vet. This was unethical of him to do so. I am a long time breeder of yorkies and vet tech. and groomer. Since 1967. Hope this helps you. Don't worry so much. Yorkies will throw up periodically if they eat too much or something new or drink to much water. They are little hogs. LOve to all, Gloryblu |
Yes,but it is for roundworms only. This is all I know of this. Sorry, Gloryblu |

We have had this problem! Ralphie has had the same problems.. bloody diareah. It is IBS, or colitis. The medicine I now have to keep on hand is Metronitizole. And he has to be on a special diet..one protein and one carb. Since he has been on it, he has been fine. I would suspect its not worms.. |
I'm sorry that your baby is not feeling well. I hope that the medicine works for her. I've given Sadie botha yellow and a white med, but I can't remember what the name for which one was. Sorry. Quote:

Thank You for The Information I appreciate all of the advice. I certainly hope that Strongid covers hookworms also. I googled it and found it treated tapeworms, roundworms and hookworms. I hope it does the job. She really feels bad. No more diarrhea or bleeding. She is not eating well though. I will call the vet in the morning. Thank you all. |
