Please help - my baby has low blood sugar I have an 8 week old who has been diagnosed with hypoglycemia. We are feeding her every two hours and giving her nutrical and karo syrup. She is not getting better. We can not get her to gain any weight. She is only a 1/2 lb. Does anyone have any advice to help us get her through this time? We love her and don't want to lose her. Amy |
Not really sure what other advice to give you, but I'll bump this up for you in hopes that some more knowledable people on here can help you. Have you seen a vet? Maybe they could prescribe something that would help her gain weight. I'd just say to keep a close eye on her and keep doing what you are doing for now and make sure she is well fed and keep her warm. Sometimes a heating pad can help with that... Hope your baby gets better! Hugs! |
OMGosh 1/2 lb ??? I would take her to the vet asap ...or you really could lose her if she's having hypo episodes - I'm no expert but at that size you don't want to fool around ...she's too small to even be away from her mom !:( :( poor little thing - the one thing besides Nutrical is LOTS of fluids - pedialite for human kids is good ...if you have to syringe feed her do that but I would def take her in where she can be monitored if she's this sick - the vet is the best place for her right now at that size ....Is she one of your puppies ...or I hate to ask - did some 'breeder' sell you a dog that tiny ? GOOD LUCK TO YOU and I hope she's going to get thru this |
Here - didn't mean to alarm you :( :( but that is just so small - this has some good help in it from lunasmom - she offers a mixture of food to try feeding - and she had firsthand experience with this - I haven't but have read so much about it I feel like I have - http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...t=hypoglycemia |
My 1/2lb baby She has been to the vet twice and he says her heart and lungs are fine. She is part of a litter and her brothers are fat and healthy. The vet says we are doing everything that we can, but I don't know how to make her gain weight. I've been seeing different posts where people are giving their pups boiled chicken. Is she way to young for me to see if she would eat that? Mama doesn't have much interest in nursing anymore. Are original concern was parvo, but the vet says it is low blood sugar. She is not throwing up, nor any diarrhea. Just shakes, cold, lethargy, and doesn't want to eat. Thanks for the advice. |
puppy Best wishes for your tiny...give her Nutra Cal, minced chicken is good..also minced beef..baby food meat works well...you can put it in her mouth on the tip of your finger..by 8 weeks they should be eating lots of solid food..keep her on a warming pad...and make her a shirt out of a crew sock..best wishes |
I would ask the vet about the chicken at that age but the hard part will be getting her to eat it if she isn't hungry - if she won't eat that - try Gerber baby food chicken - anything to get something in her - she needs to eat ...you can syringe feed her that but read the link I posted in my previous post - that was some great advice on it for small dogs just like yours - I hope she's going to be ok - you sound like you're doing your best and good luck to you ! there is a search function here in this section ... if you type in hypoglycemia you'll pull up lots of threads - but rather than do that - I would feed her asap if she hasn't eaten - she must eat and she MUST have fluids or she'll dehydrate and go into seizures.:( |
JMO....... The little one is way much too small and young to be separated from her mother . |
bless your little one, she is a survivor, I am surprised the vet didnt give you advice on how to feed her...I would suggest to give her goats milk as much as she wants to drink you can either use the canned or the fresh....add Nutridrops... also try little cesar puppy "warmed a bit" most picky eaters will chow that down...also see if she will eat vanilla FAT yogart - not non fat....or get chicken baby food "warmed a bit" she needs to be fed about every 3-4 hours. I would get the nutridrops (twice a day) and benebac (once a day) as well any of the above mentioned food... I hope this helps |

I don't think she's seperated from her Mother, I believe she is in a litter that she has but just isn't eating...I think:confused: |
Thanks for the advice I will try all of this and I will keep you informed on how she is doing daily. I am boiling some chicken as we speak. I sure hope we can get her turned around. We love her so dearly already. We named her Gidget. |
Good luck Amy! I'll be keeping Gidget in my prayers, sometimes the tiniest ones turn out to be the strongest fighters! We're all rooting for her! Keep us updated! :) |
Good Luck to you and don't give up! Our Mia was 1 lb 10 oz @ 9 weeks old. We almost lost her the day after we got her! :( She spent the next 3 days at the vets hooked up to an IV. We basically did what everyone here has told you, except that we did have to force feed her - for months!!! She's 5 lbs and 9 months old now, but we still have to hand feed her (or Dad does - :D ). If you ever need help - this is the place to come. Best Wishes!!! :welcome4: |
1/2lb is extremely small to be away from her Mom...I would call the breeder and ask her if she could take her back for a couple more weeks...being that small maybe the Mother would still nurse her...I hope all goes well for this tiny one. |
Hills Prescription Diet has a special weight gaining food. Maybe you could talk with your vet about it. You might also try grinding up a very high quality puppy food and mixing it with some minced chicken, beef, or lamb. btw... What did the vet suggest feeding her? |
