Yorkie Mom May Not Be Producing Enough Milk for Pups This has all been a crazy few months as we've anticipated the birth of these little guys and girl. The vet told us not to let Roxie get with pups so we always kept her away from the male during her "time". Well, accidents happen and she ended up with pups. We were afraid she'd have to have a C-section, but she ended up having them naturally! It was such a surprise, because we thought we had another week. They're big, healthy, and adorable, which is such a blessing! However, we're afraid Roxie is not producing enough milk. It has been 24 hours since the puppies' birth and they are crying a lot. I have read on other websites that if the puppies are content they will not cry. I'm afraid if we don't solve the problem quickly we might lose these fragile cuties. Do you have any suggestions of supplements for her or for the puppies?

I've been calling all morning trying to find a vet open. I finally got one to answer and he said to get some hard puppy food for her. I have heard of the colostrum, but I was worried about the puppies crying a lot. They have stopped crying for the time being, so hopefully they will be okay. Thanks so much for the replies!!

There is not a pet ER near. I'm hoping that it was a false alarm. They're still being noisy, but they're energetic so surely they're getting some nutrition. They're going to the vet on Monday. Roxie rarely ever leaves them. For the first day she wouldn't even get out of bed to eat so I wonder if that has anything to do with it. She's better now about getting out to eat, potty, etc -- she pounces on Daddy Dandy if he even thinks about seeing his pups (he has been so excited, but we've kept Roxie and the puppies in our laundry room away from everyone). I'll keep you posted. Thanks for your concern!

| The pups may be cold. are they in a warm area and out of any drafts. I weighed my pups 3 times a day for the first week and twice a day for the next three weeks to make sure they were all getting enough to eat. My pups gained at least 1/8 of an ounce every day for the first few weeks. There were a couple that did not gain for one day but did gain the next day. The ones that showed no weight gain, I made sure they got latched and didn't get knocked off by one of the other pups for the next few feedings. They would all root so much that they would keep knocking each other loose. Their mom would let dad look in on them but she kept my husky away. She would chase her into the other room or make Dakota (the husky) go back to her own room which is the laundry room. We kept the pups in the living room in an under-the-bed storage box that I made pads for. I put a heating pad under one half of the box. I also made a cover to put over the box out of a cardboard box and cut a doorway in it. This way the pups would not get a draft and mom would feel better because it was kind of like a den to her. I hope this helps.

Hello! Sorry I haven't updated sooner. My USB cord for my digital camera with the good pics of the puppies is MIA. I was hoping I could find it and post some cute pics. The puppies are doing great. They got a checkup and their tails docked on Monday and everything is fine. Thanks so much for your concern and all the great information!! poopies.jpg
