| Is Ruthie sick?? This morning I let Ruthie and Oscar out of the ex-pen and they greeted me as they do every morning - excited kisses, twirls, etc. etc. Shortly after Ruthie seemed to be doing the "backward sneeze" - which I had never heard her do before. It was very quiet, but it looked like a 'textbook' backward sneeze (front legs spread apart, head extending out and in as she breathed, etc.). She's been doing it ALOT this morning though which I thought was strange since I've never heard her do it. Plus, I thought it usually happened when they got overexcited or something and there was nothing going on. So we got to work this morning and I put her up on my desk to feed her and she wouldn't eat right away - and had two episodes of the 'backward sneeze' in which she spit up quit a bit (actual spit, not throwing up). She finally did eat all of her breakfast though. But she was shaking and actually moaning a little bit. She's curled up in my lap here at work and has stopped shaking but every time she moves she lets out a little tiny groan or moan. What do you think it is? Should I just let her rest and see if she seems better when she wakes up? As far as I can tell, her heartrate is good and her breathing is now normal. Is it possible that she panicked with the backward sneezing and as a result kept doing it? lol, I don't know! Scratch that.. she just did it again... kinda sounds like she's got phlem or something in her throat - know what I mean? Poor little thing.... Any suggestions??

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Poor baby Ruthie. Both of my dogs get the reverse sneeze and it seems to run in spells but neither have spit up from them. Both Cali and Maya are getting over colds right now. Both had runny noses and a little cough. Maya's was more productive with some phlem. The only thing would be concerned about is the moaning when picking her up. You may want to call the vet if she continues this morning. Please let us know how she is doing.

| She's just sleeping right now... I think I'll let her rest and see how she feels later this afternoon. It was just so weird ya know? She hasn't had any other symptoms; no runny nose, runny eyes or anything. Was completely fine last night. I'm pretty sure it was just the reverse sneeze but I thought it was strange that she had never done it before and then this morning she did it like 10 times... and then some spit came out... I'll keep an eye on her and mention it to the vet on saturday when we go for her vaccination. I'll keep you posted!

| I don't know if she has anything or not, but I looked up getting a cold: Question: "My dog seems to have a cold. She is sneezing and sounds a little congested. Can I give her something over-the-counter for it, or do I need to take her to the vet? Other than those symptoms, she seems fine--playful and eating right." Answer: Dogs do get cold-type infections—"kennel cough" is one—that are contagious between dogs but not between dogs and people. As in people, they usually run their course within 10 to 14 days. If your dog is eating well, is energetic, and doesn’t have any underlying major medical issues (such as heart disease), you can treat her at home with basic nursing care. Don’t give your dog any over-the-counter medicines for her cold, but how about a little chicken soup? Just lukewarm (you should be able to stick your finger in it and hold it there comfortably), and not too oily or salty. You could also run a hot shower and hang out in the steamy bathroom with your dog for five or ten minutes once or twice a day to help loosen the congestion. Clean gently around her eyes and nose with wet cotton balls a couple of times a day if she has mucus there. Make sure she gets plenty of rest and water. She’s probably contagious, so she shouldn’t have nose-to-nose contact with other dogs until she’s completely well. If she should get so stuffed up that she loses her appetite, or if her eyes should seem itchy or sore, or if she starts to cough so much that she (or you) can’t sleep, then you should take her to the vet. http://urbanhound.com/houndHealth/Sh...er.asp?QID=372

| Thanks for the post - I think she might be ok. She hasn't had any symptoms of anything since this morning. I'll keep an eye on her though and mention it to the vet on saturday to see what she says.

| Maddie acted much like that when she had tonsillitis...it seemed like reverse sneezing but I knew it wasn't. Maddie wouldn't eat her food, but if I gave her a treat, I could tell it was hurting her when she swallowed. She also slept a lot and didn't want to do the normal things. I hope your little sweetie is fine and this was just one of those mysteries!

| How is Ruthie today? Have you taken her to the vet? They probably won't vaccinate her if she isn't feeling well.

| Ruthie seems just fine - she only had that one 'episode' on thursday morning and hasn't done it since. She's her usual puppy self! She went for her last vaccination today and she is in good health - just needs to pack on a little weight! Thanks for everyone's concern
