| HELP!!! I came home to a puppy with bloody paws! I just got my new baby on Saturday and have been putting her in the bathroom with a baby gate in front of it. She cries when I leave, but today when I came home there was blood everywhere. She had clawed at the gate so much she cut her paws. 2 of them had completely raw spots. I knew she was hurting because she just wasn't acting like herself. I have an appointment with vet tomorrow, but I was wondering what I should do. I don't want her to get hurt again, but she's not potty trained yet. I feel so awful. What should I clean her feet with? I don't want her to get an infection! Any suggestions on how to prevent this and how I should treat her feet? Thanks! Krissy |

| If the cuts are not deep, I would clean her paws with good old soap and water or half strength hydrogen peroxide (1 part H202 to 1 part water). The peroxide would probably sting less. Rinse well after either.

| Maybe you could wrap a blanket around the gate so that your puppy could still bi in the bathroom but not able to hurt his/her paws. |

| Omg, I'll bet you nearly died from shock when you saw the blood. Hopefully, it's not too serious and she'll be okay in a couple of days. I think the others gave you good advice.

| I used to just wrap a sheet around our gate because Katy would squeeze herself through the holes. It could protect her little paws and you probably have spare. |

| please do not put anything on her paws that she can lick! they do have a tendency to chew on their little feet, I would put booties on or the idea with the blanket was a realy safer suggestion, or crate her.. and I am not into to crating only using for traveling, but in your case this might be a safer option. sounds like she is having separation anxiety.

| The same exact thing happened to Tilly. We kept Tilly in the bathroom with a baby gate and she didn't like when we left. We came home to a bloody bathroom. You would of thought someone came in and killed her. She didn't appear to be in pain but I called the breeder I got her from and she said it's happened before. At first I thought Tilly got it caught on something but somehow when she was scratching the gate it sliced her and her nail was half hanging and it sliced her skin. She gave me some cream for Tilly and she eventually had to get her nail pulled. They said if not it would get infected. Tilly was diagnosed with separation anxiety not long after that. You might wanna get her checked for that. They gave Tilly some pills, Clomicalm, (sorry if I spelt it wrong). It really helped us.

| Hello and welcome to YT!!!! Putting a sheet over the gate is a good idea. However, I think you have bigger problems to worry about right now. It sounds like your new baby has seperation anxiety, which can be a serious problem for you and your dog. I would try to deal with this problem right away before things get worse. You will need a trainer to help you with this. First thing you have to do is figure out if this is in fact seperation anxiety or just a destructive behavior. . Either way, a trainer can help you figure out which one it is and how to help you and your baby. You said she has done it before at the breeder's house, so obviously this won't go away by its self and may even get worse, which is why it is important to correct this problem right away with a trainer's help. Good luck with your new baby!!!!

| Preston use to do that to his crate too... he would bite and scratch. His crate is plastic and he bit so much he created a jagged piece of plastic!!! I was so scared that I replaced the crate and now wrap blankets around it just in case.

| Hi, everyone! Thanks for your concern. I took Ladybug to the vet today. She needed a rabies shot and heratworm meds and I had him look at her feet. He said they were just small abrasions and should heal fairly quickly. He suggested using a crate, but I'm just not into that. I would rather get to the root of the problem. I'm not sure where to even start to find a trainer. Petsmart, private, I just don't know. I live in the Houston area and any help would be greatly appreciated. In the meantime, I went to BabiesRUs and bought a different gate for her. It has a solid clear plastic panel almost like pexiglass. I think it will stop her from hurting her feet, but I don't think it will stop the problem of her scratching to get out. Help me find a trainer. Thanks for all your help Krissy |

BANNED FOR NOT MAILING PRODUCTS PURCHASED | wow, the poor little baby, so sorry to hear about this problem! How long is she home alone? You may want to concider a puppy sitter. I dread going back to work, but I do leave Lillie in her expen for a couple hours a day while I go out just to get her use to me being gone. The good thing is my hubby works 3rds so at least someone is home. I sure hope you can find someone to help with this problem! best of luck to you hun! |
