Ear Mites? Hi there, I joined this forum about two weeks ago but this is my first post...So I guess I should start off by saying HI! My name is Katie, and I have a 16 week old female.when I took her to get a puppy grooming, the groomer said she may have an ear infection, so I took her to the vet this morning and the vet said she had ear mites. he also said ear mites are strange to find in dogs. he flushed her ears out, put some drops in, and put medicine on her back to kill the mites. he gave me ear wipes and the drops to use till the drops are gone. I was wondering if anyone else's yorkie had an ear mite problem, and if anyone knew of a way to prevent them? she's on frontline plus, but I read the box and I didnt see where it may control mites.....any information would help. Thanks so much & I hope to post many more! |
Welcome! Here is a thread I had a while back about ear mites... http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...ight=ear+mites |
Poor baby...good thing you are treating the mites and getting them cleared up! Just last night my yorkie was rubbing his head on the carpet like his face or ears were itching. Now I'm wondering if he might have mites  May I ask what your baby's symptoms were? Sorry I am of no help on ways to prevent mites...Obviously if my little one has mites, I will need that advice, too :p Good luck getting them cleared up. Hope your little one feels better really soon. And WeLcOmE to YorkieTalk! |
Welcome to YT. I'm sorry your baby is going through this. Ear mites are more common in cats than dogs, but are very contagious. It is possible that your puppy came to you with the ear mites already. The treatment from the vet should work just fine. Make sure you treat any other animals you have as well. Hope you love it here on YT. |
Hi and welcome to Yorkietalk Katie. My little girl had ear mites when I got her and my vest cleaned out her ears and gave me drops and I had no problems. She stopped itching and they cleared right up. My vet also said it is mostly common in the youngest of dogs, because my older dog didn't get them at all. He said after the drops are done we shouldn't have a problem again, and we didn't. :) |
Thanks for yall's fast replies. Thank you so much for the link to a previous thread, txshopper73. It had some helpful information, although I cannot figure out where she got them from, I dont have any cats or other pets and she is inside always, its reassuring to know it can be taken care of......RLC12345678, her symptoms started about a week ago, we noticed when we would rub her behind her ear she would start kicking her leg like she was in heaven, so we just thought it was one of those spots that she couldnt get to on her own. then this past monday we took her to get groomed & the groomer said she may have an ear infection so she didn't clean/pluck her ears. after that, we got home & she started shaking her head back and forth & trying to paw at her ear as well as rubbing her ear against the carpet. I also noticed a sour/foul smell coming out of her ears & what looks like ear wax, its kind of a dark tan/medium brown color. After they flushed her ears out and put the drops in, she seems to be feeling much better, but it will take about 3 weeks for me to complete the medication cycle. I hope you little boy doesn't have them, but if you think he may have them, I would definitely get him in to the vet to start the drops. Thanks again for yall's help! |
Maggie had ear mites last summer. She would scratch her ears really hard and for long periods of time. She'd also rub them on the floor/bed/couch. We took her to the vet and she cleaned them out and gave us drops for her back. They cleared up within a few weeks. |
