Not getting better! Okay, I am officially extremely frustrated! It has been 8 days since Tucker's liver shunt surgery and he is not really progressing! He hardly ever wakes up. He has been eating, drinking, and urinating fine, until today. He ate like a little pig yesterday and woke up more to play. But now he can't stop trying to chew on himself, he smells horrible (like dead fish...), and he will not eat or drink. He has slept alllll day! Am I just expecting him to be well too soon?!? Is he just having a bad day, and his incision is bothering him?!? I hate seeing him like this, I want my old Tucker back! Any suggestions? |
the smell don't sound normal.. i would call the vet.. could be he has an infection. poor baby. I hope he gets better soon. |
Did they give him an antibiotic? If they did that could be making him tired if not I would take him in to check for infection. When Cali had her surgery she was sleeping allthe time for over a week and her surgery wasn't as extensive. Hopefully he will start to feel better in a few days. It takes a lot out of these little ones. Good thought for Tucker and hugs from Cali. |
they didn't give him an antibiotic, which worried me, but we asked the surgeon and she said no just lactulose, and then our regular vet said he was fine a few days ago upon examination. im worried sick, i wish i could just get him to eat some and he would wake up a little |

I think I would be worried about the smell being an infection too. Did you ever get a thermometer? Anything over 103 I would be going to the emergency vet. I think sleeping is the body's way of recovering so that wouldn't bother me as much. He has to at least be drinking though, pedialyte would be best. Keep us posted, I'll say a prayer. |
Thanks for the replies everyone. Tucker still slept almost all day, but when he wakes up he seems more himself (SUCH a relief to me). He does not have as strong on an odor. Because of his shunt he would always have a salty smell from his mouth because of the toxin build up. I've done some research, and we've come to the conclusion that since his liver is rejuvinating almost 4xs in the next few weeks-months that it is having to detoxify more, hence the odor. He has had a better day, but this whole recovery has been a bit of a roller-coaster so I hope it continues to get better with time. His staples come out Wednesday, right now they are driving him insane! I'll keep you all updated. Thanks again |
I'm glad you found some relief! It sounds like Tucker is hanging in there very well & is on the road to recovery. You're a good mom to keep such a keen eye for detail, keep up the good work! |
We are all hoping and praying that Tucker continues to improve each day...hang in there! |

Poor Tucker . . . I hope he will hurry up and recover soon . . .we will keep him in our prayers. Annika and Tiger sends their slurrpy kisses :) |
I hope Tucker is already well down the road to recovery... Surgery for LS is slow in healing and it can cause the blood values to be off in the blood panel. Please keep us posted... |
