sick mom I have a two year old female that had puppies that are fou weeks old. Mom and babies have done great so far. Today I noticed that Reese (aka the mom) was running fever. She has been sleeping alot. Could this be from her trying to wean the puppies. Any feed back would be great. |
You have to wean the puppies by making gruel and taking the mom away for half the day today so they do not nurse on mom. I wean my puppies starting at 4 weeks old and they are fully weaned by 5 weeks old. You can soften puppy food and add a little cottage cheese. It's got to be very mushy because puppies don't have teeth yet and won't be chewing.... they will be licking it. As for the mom, take her to the vet ASAP. She should not have a fever. Keep us posted! |
Did you actually take a rectal reading? What was it? Pupils dilated? The puppies being 4 weeks old is a common time for the Mom to develop low calcium. She probably needs to go to the vet first thing a.m., and get her calcium level checked and get a calcium injection - this could be very serious - you cannot simply give calcium to improve the level quickly. You might even have some emergency plans for tonight in case she gets worse. here's a link on eclampsia - low calcium http://www.lowchensaustralia.com/breeding/eclampsia.htm |
How is Reese today? |
