| Lola broke her leg again! Lola broke her leg on Valentines Day! She had a cast for a month and the doctor removed it about a week and a half ago. Everything looked like it healed fine. Since then Lola has not always put her weight down on that leg, but she was gaining strength everyday. On Thursday night she was playing at my boyfriend's grandparents house and started to cry. No one saw what happened, but it was obvious that her leg was broken again. Off to the emergency again ! We thought that she might have broken it in the same place. However, this time the break went through two bones. Lola is only six months old and she has now gone through this twice. Fast forward to a day later and we find out that she needs to go to an orthopedic surgeon for surgery. The vet said that the surgery will be about 5,000 dollars. Here is my dilemma... Most people do not understand how I could spend this kind of money on my little girl.. She has already cost us about 3,000 in vet bills. Of course I don't want to spend this money, but I feel like I have no choice. Why do people feel the need to tell me that I should consider euthanizing my dog. Also, I am wondering if any one else on YT has VPI and if it possible for them to drop our insurance for too many claims. Sorry to complain...but I know that everyone here feels the same way about their pets. |

| Thats terrible that you have people telling you to euthanize her over a broken leg. I could never do that no matter what the cost. I hope little Lola gets to feeling better soon.

| Oh Lola, I'm so sorry for her. I don't have the insurance, but it sounds like you do. I'm not sure if they can drop you or not. But I sure hope they don't. |

| Awwwww. Your poor Lola baby! I had a cat that broke the same leg twice and I have never regreted having the surgery to keep her. She was a year old then and is now 11 years old and she has given me 11 wonderful years. Follow your heart!

| Thank you all for your support and well wishes. I also forgot to ask if anyone else had ther dog break the same leg twice. The vet said that her bone was weakened because she was not using that leg. Does anyone know if this could be true? I thought that your bone strenghth was something that could not atrophy. Let me know |

| I don't really know about the bone, but the muscle atrophy ( not being used) could cause her to be weak on that side and fall again. If the bone was not fully healed then I think reinjury would definately be possible.

| Just a P.S. You are paying a high dollar for surgery because of your location on the west coast, too, I think. Here in Montana a full cast for my cat cost $600 10 years ago. Even with inflation it would not be $3000-5000 now. My yorkie had knee surgery for luxating patella 4 years ago and it was $630. It would be a bother to travel but you might want to consider a second opinion, possibly in a different area. ???? Just a thought. I know you don't have a time option.

| This was a second opinion. The first time she broke her leg it was 1200. That was because it was the emergency room that put the cast on. This time they recommeded the surgery because she may rebreak the leg again if they jus cast it. |

| Im so sorry that Lola broke her leg again, poor little girl. I will have her in my prayers. Her bone can atrophy for lack of use. I dont have Pet insurance, but you need to check the contract. I hope they dont drop cause to many claims. Please keep us posted. Wow, I cant believe how some people recommend euthanizing, . So sad. Do what you feel is best for her. |

| Sorry to hear about Lola, sending hugs and get well wishes her way. Daisy broke her leg when she was a couple months old. I was very lucky our small town vet charged so little to fix her. I was thinking thousands to fix her leg. I think it was less than $200 for everything including the xray, anesthesia, setting it..... She did keep her cast on 6 weeks and the vet did not charge anything to remove her cast. I miss that vet Last edited by Breeze; 03-25-2006 at 04:50 PM. Reason: spelling, lol |

| broken leg When Clemmie also broke her leg in two places, the cast stayed on FIVE months! He regularly checked it, xrayed and waited for the bones to calcify and strenghten. Clemmie walked well on the cast..my vet actually said it could come off at 4 months, but I asked for it to be left another month...the first check at 1 month showed very little healing, at 2 months is was only half healed...she did have surgery and a pin put in. Good Luck PS...the vet bill for 5 months and surgery was $700..at $5000 I would set it myself and put a cast on! LOL |
