| Enlarged heart Please please share your experience with enlarged heart. My yorkie, Teddy, is 9. He has been coughing alot lately so we took him to the vet who prescribed some antibiotics but they weren’t helping so we took him back today for xray and blood work. Blood work came back normal but xray showed an enlarged heart. I’ve googled it and it is not promising. Please share your experience with it and pleasee also pray for Teddy. I’ve asked for prayers on this forum before and it’s always been magical. Please please please i am so worried. thank you so much |

| One of my pups now passed was diagnosed with enlarge heart at age 9 years old, also coughed so much I didn't know how she could breathe. I cannot say what meds she was given, this was in 2005. By baby lived a healthy with meds until she was 13 years old. Her cause of death was not related to her heart. Keep the faith, there are meds that will help Teddy live a better life. prayers going out for lil Teddy.

| In smaller breeds especially yorkies their heart can appear larger but not not be. I had a Vet once say a yorkies heart looked enlarged and then an actual radiographer looked at the xray and said it was not. The worse thing you can do is google that stuff on the internet. Do you have specialist around where you live or semi near you?

| So the vet we went to see today told us the condition is pretty severe, and she prescribed theophylline 100mg for 7 days because Teddy has fluids in his lungs. Enalapril 5mg for 30 days and Furosemide 40mg. We were told to come back after a month to see if the meds are working and if they affect his kidney. Has anyone tried these meds?? |

She was diagnosed with an enlarged heart in June '16 and was put on 20mg of Furozenol. The dose was doubled six months later and another 5mg added in March '17. She remained on that dose until she passed away in Feb '19. It's good that your vet recommended to check the kidneys in a month's time. I hope that Teddy gets better. |

| As I said, Lucy was very old. Her condition was diagnosed by x-ray, her heart was one and a half times enlarged. I forgot to mention that in November '18 she was diagnosed also with kidney and liver problems. Last edited by Hermione; 07-24-2021 at 01:00 AM. |

My cousin in Florida also mentioned heartworms disease as possible cause of enlarged heart. I have to check with the vet because when she said we can’t fix Teddy’s heart and the longevity is from 6 months to 2 years my heart just sank.

| I’ve had lots of cats and dogs throughout the years, and when they get seriously ill, I always say to myself (even the vet tells me so) that they’ve only a few months to live, they surprise me by living years. All you can do is keep giving the best care, which you are already doing. My Lucy lived three years after being diagnosed and as I said, she was old, perhaps around 14 or 15. Good luck! |

Teddy is our first family dog which me and my husband got shortly after we got married. Teddy is our first baby, before the kids came. We never gave up when he went missing, when he was attacked almost to death by another dog. Can’t give up now.

| I have another question regarding the dog’s diet. Our vet said there is no need to make any changes to his diet, but I’ve googled and want to try to switch to Royal Canine Cardiac. Has anyone have any experience or has your vet specify any dietary needs? |

| It’s always good to get a second opinion. My vet didn’t recommend putting Lucy on a cardiac diet, he was of the opinion to put her on a renal diet since she had kidney disease. Teddy has been through a lot, poor boy, will be thinking of him and praying for him too. |

I am so sad today. I’ve just realized Teddy is not 9, he is actually 10. I guess I didn’t want to think of his age as two digit number.
