| Poisonous cactus/succulents - Aloe, Euphorbia, Jade, Kalanche I have 2 puppies--Mollie, 5 months and Jake, 6 months. On Friday night the pups began throwing up, they continued throwing up bile (clear yellowish liquid). Saturday they would not eat or drink, and slept all day. I was giving them water with a syringe dropper, and walking them around the yard every hour or so. I have five other dogs who were not sick. We were racking our brains to think of what they had gotten into. We are very careful about spray cleaners, etc that we use and because the rest of the dogs are fine, we ruled out foods and treats. I had been re-potting plants, being springtime, and the pups were helping, Mollie would pull them up and Jake would try to take them away from her. I started trying to look up if they were poisonous and could find little information. Finally I found this article on petmd.com https://m.petmd.com/dog/emergency/po...-cats-and-dogs On Sunday, they continued throwing up bile, I began giving them chicken bullion. They would still walk around the yard. Finally on Monday, Jake ate a piece of chicken, barked once and played a little. I called my vet to see if he thought they should come in for fluids. He thought they would be fine to stay home with me giving liquids and walks. Jake perked up through the day. (I am retired, so I am able to care for them all day and night) Tuesday-Jake continues to improve Wednesday, Mollie finally started to feel better, ate some chicken, drank water and played a little. These plants-Aloe, Euphorbia, Jade, Kalanche-are all poisonous to pets, they cause gastrointestinal problems, vomiting and diarrhea; lethargy and incoordination. Please be careful with plants, look up the ones you have, especially keep poison plants away from playful puppies.

| Thank you for the heads up. I am happy to know your pups are ok, lil monkeys get into everything. All plants ppl have should be googled for the poisonous ones for our babies, anyone gowning patio tomatoes be careful, if a pup eats any that are green will cause them to get sick.

| Thanks for the info. We don't always think about house plants being poisonous. |

| Just an FYI: giving water by dropper will NOT rehydrate a dehydrated dog and no yorkie should go for over 24 hours without food and water without seeing a vet. I find it hard to believe a vet would say not to come in with a dog that had vomited the entire weekend... I am not trying to come off harshly here, but I was horrified while reading the original post . IF your vet said it was ok after that many days and not seeing your puppy, I would be looking for another vet. I personally would have been at an emergency clinic. Yes, many plants are poisonous. While on that topic, be very careful outside. Texans seem to be enamored with Sago Palms as they are everywhere...they are DEADLY to dogs and cats: https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-p...palm-poisoning

| Thank you for your opinion ladyjane, but the puppies were never dehydrated. I kept an eye on them constantly. I gave them water every hour and took them for a walk to make sure that they were alert. I have had 7 to 10 dogs for the past 15 years with this same vet. He knows me, I know them all. He trusts me to bring them in immediately if necessary. Five days is a long time to give constant care to a sick pup. If I had to work or be away from them at all, I would certainly leave them at the vet. Jake is going in on Monday for his blood workup to be neutered on Friday😢

| Yeah, well, I am also a very experienced dog owner....if a dog vomited for that many days there is NO way he/she would be hydrated with just a dropper or syringe. At the end of the day, you can do and say what you want. My post is for others who might think it is ok to let a dog vomit for 4 or 5 days ..these little ones can die very quickly. Glad you like your vet. I have never had my vet tell me that my dog was adequately hydrated after four days of vomiting by speaking to me on the phone.

| The vet told me to bring her in at the first sign of lethargy. She was not lethargic, but pretty active. I was really just trying to say--put these plants out of reach of curious puppies.

| Hard to comprehend why you think it is unusual for someone to comment about your dogs vomiting for three days and a vet saying it isn't necessary to see them ...now you add IF they were not lethargic. I am also retired and home and would never let my small dogs vomit for three days without being seen by a vet. Perhaps what you call "vomiting for three days" is not really what I am thinking it is. The plants seemed like an afterthought ... there are plenty of plants that cause gastrointestinal issues and plenty that are even more toxic. I posted one above that is a Texas favorite and it will kill a dog in minutes if ignored.... the Sago Palm Very toxic!

| Generally if a dog eats something toxic they should go to the vet right away no exceptions. My youngest came inside and had a massive allergic reaction to something like hives, swollen eyes and stuff and I didn’t even hesitate I threw a Benadryl in him and rushed him to the ER at midnight. I am considered disabled and home all the time with vet assistant training and would still take my pups in if they were vomiting that long. Even mine being larger would be dehydrated by that point and just straight up feeling terrible.
