Encephalitis

Hey has anyones Yorkie had/has enciphiltis. Our dog suddenly started turning in circles and then a day later could not walk, we rushed her to the vet and then got a referral to a neurologist in Vancouver. She is now on a cocktail of cyclosporin, prednisone and famotidine. She is a 3.5 lb (3 year old) Yorkie girl. We got her from reputable breeder and are honestly devastated (any info would be helpful). XoXo

Thanks for the prayers you guys. Today she seems to have gotten a little bit of an energy boost, but has now lost responsiveness in her other eye. We are just praying she responds to the medicine at this point. Apparently some yorkies do not respond and the lesions in the brain get larger. It's basically an autoimmune disorder where the body thinks the brain is a foreign object and it attacks the brain. It seems to affect yorkies, pugs and Maltese the most according to the neurologist.

My yorkie Troy had GME. Not a good diagnosis . This was about 6 years ago , my nail techs dog now has it and has been managingvwit steroids but the prognosis is dire and to get the a point of understanding what’s going on with tests, meds , scans , vet visits , special food it can be expensive .

Sorry to hear your dog had it as well. Its kind of crazy because I have never heard of encephalitis before this, and when we did our dog research it did not seem to come up as a potential health issue. Yes it has been pretty expensive already with the neurologist and all the meds, but its my baby and I don't have kids. How long did you dog live after it was diagnosed with GME?

Hello. It's been quite a long time since I last logged into my account, but your post prompted me to respond. I am so sorry to hear your furbaby was diagnosed with GME!! I know you probably have a lot of questions, so I will be happy to help you in any way that I can. Though I am hardly an expert, I am willing to share my experiences with you.


My Sachi was diagnosed with GME at 4.5 years old. Initially, we started noticing it seemed like her vision was declining. Though she acted normal, there were times it seemed like couldn't see everything clearly. We made an appointment with our vet, but a few nights before we were to go for a checkup, she had a grand mal seizure. After rushing her to the emergency room, they initially thought she had epilepsy. However, a few days later, she still had really bad weakness on her right side (could stand and walk, but very unsteady). Her vision was markedly worse as well, but she could still navigate. She was also very "down". We took her back and they did further testing along with an mri and that's how they found out it was actually GME.



Like you, we never heard of this before and it came as quite a shock. She immediately went on a high dosage of prednisolone. To our amazement she was like a new dog! She had slight weakness on her right side and vision impairment but she was back to our happy dog. We had vet visits every week at the start but as she stabilized, those visits decreased in frequency. We also started to slowly ween her off preds but added the cyclosporine into her schedule. Although she did continue to have some weakness in her right side and loss of some vision, for the most part, she was happy and more spoiled than ever. She could pretty much do what she did before, with exception of having us to be more careful not to expose her to other dogs because of her diminished immune system on the medications.


She was in good shape for 1.5 years, but unfortunately, when she took a downturn, it went really fast. We noticed her vision was getting worse and her weakness as well. Increased the preds again but it really didn't help. She started Chemo (cytarabine), but we didn't see any results. About a month after we noticed her declining, she had another seizure. She was in and out of the hospital for 2 weeks, but she couldn't see and couldn't stand at all now. After 2 weeks, we had to make the decision none of us want to make and send her to the rainbow bridge. She had yet another seizure that last night and even on all her medication (including anticonvulsants) they could not not stop the seizures. We could not let her suffer anymore.


What breaks my heart is, she had such a fighting spirit, but the disease took her body away from her. She was full of love and she was so young, just 2 days shy of her 6th birthday. I am grateful that we had a year and half with her, but I am also greedy that I wanted more. My advice to you is cherish all the moments you have. I've read good and sad stories and I pray your baby can live a long life with medication.

My previous Yorkie developed Necrotizing encephalitis at age 8. She was treated. Yes a neurologist in Jacksonville Florida at the beginning. It is a devastating disease and medication is very important. She lived a very comfortable and happy life for about 4 years after the diagnosis but nprenal failure due to the medication was the end problem. But she was a sweetheart and my 💜 to the end.

Back in those days I did not have pet insurance and had to keep going with Carecreditnn

I had heard of encephalitis on YT, of all places. I didn't give it much thought when I read about it so many years ago. Kaji had trouble with his back legs, which was initially mistaken for trouble with his already existing luxating patellas. It wasn't until he started having tremors that we got a referral to the neurologist. An MRI showed his encephalitis was so bad, our vets were amazed he was still walking. Shortly after, we had to put Kaji down. Kaji celebrated his 10th birthday Aug 1st, he started showing signs of leg weakness Aug 5th, started having tremors around Aug 16th, was diagnosed with encephalitis Sept 1st, steadily deteriorated beyond our control, and we made the tough decision to put him down on Oct 21st. Watching him lose everything that made him Kaji was the hardest thing I've ever had to do.

I do so apologize to the OP for never responding to the PM they sent. We had just brought home baby JakJak, who was suppose to be a 10th birthday present for Kaji. JakJak is my first puppy. As dumb or corny as this sounds, Kaji and I were suppose to do this whole raising a puppy thing together (Kaji was so good with all temp fosters, helping with basic commands, potty, etc) and with Kaji gone, I was overwhelmed by his baby brother. I just didn't have time for YT.

Thank you for your kind words. Easy isn't the right word, because saying goodbye to him devastated me. But coming to the decision to say goodbye was easier because I knew I was freeing him. He was free from being trapped by his failing body, free of any pain (my neurologist said Kaji wasn't in any pain, but instead lived in a perpetual fog), and free to run and enjoy himself at the rainbow bridge.

We did try a lot of the medications mentioned by other users, but unlike Sachi, Island Girl's baby girl, Kaji did not respond to any of it. Once he was on the steroids to help his brain swelling, Kaji was suppose to gain use of his legs again. For about a week, he was able to stand again, before quickly fumbling over, and maybe lean on something to try to walk, but that was it. The only improvement we saw before he declined and continued to decline, were the tremors. Those stopped and he was finally able to sleep. But he continued to get sicker.
