Is this an allergy ? Hello so faith has been scratching at her eye lately and rubbing it against her blanket. She is making above her eye and the side raw Our vet gave us an antihistamines for her we were giving it to her every other day but it does seem to help. She only really does it at night right before bed. I thought maybe something on our blanket so I washed it with baby laundry detergent and no difference. She was just spayed on 2/14/17 and all her blood work was perfectly normal . I am trying to attach a picture but it keeps telling me the file size is to big |
I'm not convinced this is allergies since she's only bothering 1 eye. Does she also chew/lick at her paws at all...? Antihistamines have a short half-life...the longest being 24 hours - so if you're only giving it every other day, it has never had a chance to remain at a therapeutic level. What med are you giving, exactly? This could be just an eye issue - ingrown lashes, dry eye, blocked tear duct etc etc - it could be many things. You may need to see a Vet Ophthamalogist. |
She could have an infection. Has the vet looked at it? I wouldn't play with eye issues and would head to the vet. |
She does go to her paws and I hear her do the thumper scratching at her body but nothing as bad as the eye. Yes her vet did look at it when we went for then2 week follow up after she was spayed and gave us the allergy pill. I'm taking her back Saturday morning to her have looked at again and I'm going G to give her the pill every day from now until then to see if it helps. She was doing the right eye now leaves that one alone and goes for the left. What strikes me as odd is she only really digs at it at night right before she goes to sleep |

Mine was doing that and they gave me antibiotic eye drops because after making sure there was no scratches and thought it might be conjunctivitis and after a week it cleared up. Is there any discharge? |
Doesn't sound like allergies, especially because it is one eye, as Wylie's mom pointed out. Could be hair in the eye, which sometimes can be difficult to detect. Max used to get long hairs wrapped up into his eyelid and I didn't know until I became expert in finding them. He also gets shorter hairs poking into the corner of one eye. It is also possible for dogs to suffer dry eye in one eye, a lack of adequate tear production. There is a test for tear production, as well as a test to detect scratches and ulcers that cannot be seen without a special dye. Both are easy and inexpensive tests. Special meds are required to prevent further problems. Could also be conjunctivitis as Taylor suggested, as happened with her pup. Not all regular vets are great with eyes. I would look for a vet with advanced training in eye care or a specialist. Max had lots of eye problems when he was younger and we were lucky that our vet just happened to have advanced training because he was a pet ER doc. |
