Old yorkie crying early in morning
 

Hello, I wrote a long message and everything just disappeared when I pressed on the submite button, so will not continue with this subject until I know it's working, so this is a test.

Hello, ok now I can start again,I live in Brittany France (since 1991) my old yorkie will be 15 in Nov, he has had a spanish dog as a friend since 2006, and recently a whippet who will be 2 this October. Rex was on heart pills for 3 yrs only to find out he didn't need them, changed vets because of this. He had a slight stroke in 2013, this I thinik was due to these pils as they dialate the veins. He was in our camper van with the other dog at our daughters wedding, and he got a bit stressed. He has two small cataractes in both eyes and is going deaf. He was injured by a nasty person with a kick on the beach a few months ago, but with all our loving care his slipped disc is now better, although very careful with him now, no long walks. My problem is he starts crying early in the mornings, he sleeps with the other dogs down stairs, before never any problems. He starts at 6 am now 5am, I've been down to see if all ok, been kind and reasuring with him, then tried telling him off, but 20 mins later he starts again, the noise is just awful, it's causing my cats, instead of just going down stairs and out side or using the lit tray up stairs, to piss in the rooms, they are fightened to go down stairs. The spanish Dog has now started to tell him off, it's getting on her nerves. I'm getting extremely tired, and nearly fell down stairs my self the other day. My grand daughter can't come, when she does she is woken up and a 3 yrs old woken up at 6 am is annoying when she normally sleeps on. Is it because he is going deaf and can't see properly so is feeling insecure with out me ???? he has the other dogs with him, it's a sif, ok I have slept enough it's about time you get up !!!! he goes out through the cat flap to do his toilet like always. I can't take him upstairs, otherwise he will want to be on the bed and it's too high, might hurt his back, can't leave him on the floor as he needs to do a wee in the night, he can't use the stairs anymore, too much jolting for his back. Has anyone got a solution so he keeps quiet like he did before. Ths noise he makes is just awful, it gets right through to you. Thanks if anyone has some ideas. I am so sorry about your situation. I know how hard it is to be woken up when your not ready to wake up. From what I have gone though with my girl Poochy she is 12 years old when she wants some thing she comes up with a way to get my attention. I think you are right about your boy wanting to be with you. Did he use to sleep with you before his injury? Since he is an old man and may still be in pain in his back I think he just wants more of your love. Every thing you are doing to keep him safe he does not under stand. If his routine has been to sleep with you. I think may be a vet visit would be wise to find out what they think about his crying. So sorry your kitties are having there routine messed up also. When my girl was 15.5 y/o her sight started to fail and she was getting hard of hearing, she could no longer sleep on my bed. I used my home office to sleep in because I have a futon, it's lower to the floor and my girl was able to sleep with me until she was a bit over 16 y/o, then she had to sleep in her bed next to the futon, I slept with my hand in her bed so she would know I was there. At that time when ever I had to leave the house for something my neighbors would tell me he cried and howled the entire time I was gone. I came home one day and heard her, it was heart wrenching. She was scared, she knew I was not home. She was close to 17 y/o, almost completely blind, totally deaf, she getting confused, dementia was setting in, she would get in a corner and not be able to get out. I left her alone only to go food shopping and the bank, I was to fearful she would panic if she got in a corner and couldn't get out. Your baby is scared, loosing sight and hearing, yes he is feeling insecure without you. I can only tell you what I did for my sweet baby. I would have slept on the floor if I had to just to keep her secure in knowing I was right there by her, but that is just me. I hope others can offer advise.

Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Sorry to hear your boy is having some issues. There is a strong chance that this is not a behavior issue. He could be experiencing more pain in the morning that is causing him to cry. Could be his back after lying down for an extended period of time, or something else.

I was reading yesterday about human brain tumors and how certain types often cause extreme headaches in the morning that improve during the day. This is not to suggest that your boy has a tumor, but just to demonstrate that health problems can be associated with early day pain.

I hope you can find a solution that works for him and your whole family. Would he use a piddle pad if you set up an xpen in your bedroom with the pad?

Some people have put a dog crate on their beds or bedside table to make an ailing dog happy while keeping them safe.

In answer to Poochy7, no he has never slept with us, always down stairs, he was trained right from a baby to stay downstairs, and at that time on his own, although the cats would come and go, so he wasn't really on his own, then in 2006 we adopted a podenca from Ibiza, a spanish greyhound, Rex was 6 and Sandy about 2 and right from day one they just love each other and go everywhere together. Rex never cried for me in the mornings like this. When ever I go out, I say "look after the house for Mummy, see you later", if he is not on the bed with Sandy, he gets up and joins her and looks at me as if to say, ok. We got our Whippet as I was affraid if something happened to Rex poor Sandy would be on her own and she is so attached to little Rex, she would have been too stressed, already a stressed dog after her passed life in spain. They all sleep together, but Rex tends to snuggle up to her Sandy, like a big teddy bear. After he had his back hurt, we made a little ramp up to the bed (sofa) so he could still go up and be with the other two, but now he is better he can jump again.
Like you say Maximo, sounds very much like what you went through, I think because of his eyes, his ears and the confusion, dementia setting in, he is frightened to be with out me. Now my husband is at home, retired, when I go out, he said he is constantly going out the catflap looking for me. I think I will have to try and give him some homeopathic treatment, so will ask the vêt which one, so that in the long term calms this stress he has. It's extremely upsetting to see him go this way, he is such a little love as you can imagine, and because of his stress and crying starting early in the morning, he spends his day sleeping, but if I'm out side when he wakes up he follows me everywhere, before he was just happy having the company of the other dogs. Here is a photo of the 3 on their main bed, they have a few, but this one is in the hall, Rex also has his own little niche just on the floor next to this one.
I'm going to give him his homéopathie treatment tonight, so maybe I need a few nights before seeing any results, will keep you posted, bye for now and thanks again for those trying to help me.

Oh my goodness lol, how sweet is that. Even tho he was trained from a puppy to sleep down stairs, he's getting older, getting confused, he has no voice to ask momma why can't I see well anymore. You are his source for everything, food, love, cuddles, protection, I believe he needs the security of knowing you are near him. I know what I went through with my senior, she passed at 17 y/o. For the last 1.5 of her life I slept in my home office so she could be closer to me, I can only offer my personal experience. Good luck, I hope the homéopathie works for you and your lil guy. Please do keep us up-dated.

Our seniors will break our hearts.....I think what is said here is right on target.....I have lived through this over the last several years, as my precious dogs age and then pass......it breaks my heart and I also sleep where ever I have to sleep, in order to accommodate the needs of this precious little dog that has devoted every fiber of it's being, to exist in my life, wanting nothing in return other than to be loved and nurtured and cared for by me. I have to admit, I have problems getting up and down on a make shift bed on the floor, "just to make a dog happy"(some of my family that do not know me as well as others, think I am crazy doing this "for a dog", but my close family knows and understand me and if I ever did NOT do things like this for my babies, these family members would look at ME for what was wrong with MY health!!).

I think this is what is happening to your precious little soul.....and as sight and hearing diminish, this little man is now dependent on YOU and your strength and devotion to him, to keep him safe and secure.....he needs YOU now, he is frightened by these changes in his own self, and I think his needs will graciously and lovingly be met by you.....what a lovely crew you have!! Best wishes to you and your crew....you are getting into the most difficult part of loving these precious souls.....remember his devotion and care and love he has had for YOU all these years, and now, it is your turn to reflect all that back onto him!

up to date news on Rex

I didn't get back straight away, wanted to see if things had worked for me and thanks Lizchloe for your reply also, this has given me loads of help. Well what I have done, he is on some homeopathic treatment, I give him 3 little balls of Gelsemium 15ch, 3 of chamomilla vulgaris 9ch and 3 of ignatia amara. These dessolve in some water and he drinks this after his meal at night, 7pm. He already has some devils claw (plant) in powder form, half a cap 3 times a week, this is for his back. We then cut a hole in the door gate that prevents the dogs going up the stairs, lined the stairs with non slip material and put his little niche bed in our room so it's looking at me.
I have understood that because he is going deaf and blind,and dimentia, he is very insecure. Now for 3 nights he is as good as gold, he knows he has to stay in his little bed and we don't hear a peek out of him. The cats still go on the bed, no problem and now they can go downstairs and out again, as Rex isn't making this awful crying noise. This morning, he didn't get up until 7.45, had a little accident at the top of the stairs, think he left it too late to go down, but then went down very slowly and out to do his poo. He didn't come back up this morning as we were still in bed, but he can if he wants, he just went with the other two and didn't say a word. I have chosen the white on the stairs because when it's dark he can't see and tends to fall in the stairs, when they have this film growing over the eyes they can only see light images, also we have left the bathroom door open up stairs, so it's the natural light outside once the day comes showing through the window. The treatment he is on is calming him down generaly, he doesn't panic so much when I go outside with out him.
I have enclosed some photos so you can see what we have done. It was so sad to see him like he was and very upsetting, and in a reply to what was said also, a few friends of mine said if they came back in this life once gone, they would love to be a cat or dog in our home, so that must tell you that we really do our best for our animals. Well many thanks again, just wish I had thought about this forum before, but it's never too late, now my little Rex is happier and everyone in the house is able to wake up naturally. I am happy that you have taken him to your room, this is what he needed, to know you are near him. He may be starting to become incontinent so its good you put the pad out, but that does not mean he will always be able to reach the pad on time. My baby was not able to hop down the 4 inch ledge from my laundry room to the deck, her vision was so bad, she had no depth perception. I had ramps with side railing that went from the outside of the laundry room to the deck, then a ramp with side railing that went down the 3 steps to the yard for my sweet senior. She became incontinent and peed where ever she was. Dementia soon followed she would get under the kitchen table and due to chairs was unable to get out, so I removed all the kitchen chairs, she would end up in a corner and not be able to get out, I would find her there and pick her up and move her. It was heart wrenching to she her like this, but she was healthy, ate well and I loved her even more and cuddled her harder. I was told when you have a deaf dog bang on the floor, they will feel the vibration and face in that direction, this did not work for me, I always had to go fetch her for things like time to eat. Do what you need to do to keep your baby safe and as happy as he can be in his senior days, he is confused and needs your presence for his security blanket. Be careful of those steps, that's a lot of steps for a dog with a sight issue. You're a good pet mommy. Please do keep us up-dated. We are concerned for everyone's babies not just our own.

Well this morning, he woke up at about 7.30, came out of his Niche towards our bed, I put my hand down to stroke him, he was pleased, then he lay down against my bed, I thought he would go downstairs to do his wee, but no he then went back into his Niche. I got up eventually at 8.45, started opening the curtain, thought he had gone down stairs, but no he was half sleeping still in his niche, I looked in the hall, he had not done a wee on the paper either. I then invited him to come out and down the stairs, which he did, wagging his little stump of a tail, he then went stright out with the other two dogs and did a big wee. It's as if I have got another yorky, it's obviously what was needed, just to be with me at night, he feels secure now if he wakes up knowing I'm just in view.
Well this is just how cute he is, this photo was taken of him when he was a young man, with my glasses on. Thanks again for the advice I have had from everyone. bye for now, Brittany29:animal36

I am so glad every one is happy now. You did a good job! My girl Poochy is 12 years old and she sleeps in her own bed in the living room. Last year she did a lot of waking us up at night so we made her an other bed in my husbands bed room. She sleeps in there now and is very happy till his snoring gets on her nerves. As it does me. So now I put a bed in my room for her. Last night was the first time she used it. This is how it goes for Poochy. Six thirty while we are still watch movies she goings in to my husband room to her bed. Midnight she has had enough snoring so she goes in to the living room. Two hours later she is lonely so she scratches on her head board till I wake up and bring her in to her bed in my room. Quite a set up she has. She has never wanted to sleep in our beds. She was a puppy mill rescue so she never learned how to jump up on furniture. We have had her going on seven years and she has change our lives every much. Poochy is the queen of the house and that is how it should be. Why else get a dog if you aren't going to let them have as good a life as possible. That's all from me have a great week end. God Bless

Hello everyone, sorry haven't been around, now just giving the up to date news about Rex. Everything into order now, by putting him up in our room at night in his little niche has solved the problem. We have now removed the white bits on the stairs and laid half moon carpet shapes, this way he doesn't slip at all, we have even put a child light in the stair way so that he can see if he wants to come down in the night, not only that, our cat has stopped pissing outside the cat litter, she now goes down the stairs, I think cats must loose the sight in their eyes, their night sight when they get older as well, the other 3 use the cat litter. He is still on his homeopathic treatment, this calms him down generally, he doesn't like it when I'm not around, but it's impossible to take him every where, so this helps. In fact he is so good, he doesn't even wee on the news paper I put down for him at the top of the stairs, he waits until we get up in the morning, then trots down the stairs very carefully and goes out side to to do his wee, he holds on for 8 hours, which is very good for an old gentleman. So I thank you all again for giving me your experiences, this has really helped me make my mind up to take him up stairs in our bedroom, and he is so good, so clean. My friend will be coming round on the 10th November with his brother, they will celebrate their 15th Birthday together, not only that he has no heart problem at all, since I took him of the pills he was on and changed vets, he is really doing well. These heart pills make the dogs wee all the time, and I'm so cross he was diagnosed with heart problems when he didn't have. so always get a second opinion !!!! Well long may he continue to be with us, for as long as possible, he is such a sweet love, and the other two big dogs adore him. Hi, So glad Rex is doing so well. I have very sad news my Poochy died Sept 15th at four in the morning. It was a shock and hit us very hard. My husband was with her and she was in her own bed. The shock was that just a few days before she had been at the vet and she had said how very healthy Poochy was. She was 12 years old. I could tell this last year she was getting old and was not always happy. We had rescued her from a puppy mill when she was 6. She had come a long way from the skinny sad girl we saved. Her last 6 years of life we did every thing with her. I think having your dog die at any age is the hardest thing to go thought. She also was very sweet. I am just so glad she is at peace with God. I have not been on the yorkie talk web site since she passed it is just to hard to read or talk about the sweet dogs. I just got your post on my e-mail so thought I should respond to you. Thank you for the update. So happy to hear little boy is more relaxed now that you have him in your room at bed time. These senior years are so important, they need us more now then when they were puppies, losing sight, hearing is scary to them, they need to know we are close to them.
