| Liver Problems? I haven't posted in a long time and I had to reregister because we have a new cable company so I have a new email address. But anyway, we just bought a 12 week old male yorkie a few weeks ago. Up until a few nights ago he has been acting and eating fine. The other night I heard him throwing up in his bed, he did this all night and until we could see the vet in the afternoon. I gave him karo syrup just in case. The vet said he didn't have a fever, they did blood work to see if he was hypoglycemic and that came back fine. The vet gave me a medication he said probably a bacterial infection but couldn't rule out a liver shunt. Have been through that with a previous yorkie. So, last night he continued to throw up and was falling down, took him to the emg vet and they did all kinds of blood work liver levels are off she said she can't rule out a shunt. They hydrated him gave him a shot of antibiotics that will last three days. The emg vet said he needs to have another liver test I think it's a fasting blood test. Waiting now for my own vet to call me back. But, today he seems normal but I am still worried. Anyone have any suggestions or anyone out there that has gone through this? Thank you, Nancy |

Welcome back I am sorry it is not under happier circumstances. I don't have experience with this issue but let me see if I can get some knowledgeable members to help. Sending prayers for your baby.

| I am not an expert, but I have read everything I can get my hands on and we are waiting for liver biopsy results on Gracie as I write this. Some people have said that the pups will be sick, not eat well, the liver will have time to clear the toxins, they feel better and then eat, getting sick again. None of that happened to Gracie, who has never acted sick. We just found the problem when they did blood work before patellar surgery. Our first hope was that she had eaten something she shouldn't (imagine that possibility!), but retesting six weeks later gave the same result for us. I hope your little one does well. I am glad that you are following up with your vet. Please keep us up to date. There are a legion of folks here who have dealt with this issue, and they have encouraged newcomers to the "club" with success stories--we need them when our babies are sick.

| First of all back to our family. I am so very sorry that your new pups is ill. I will keep both of you in my thoughts and prayers. Here are my thoughts, if your little dude has a bacterial infection and has been throwing up, it isn't surprising that his blood work came back out of kilter. I would work at getting him well (which of course you are ) and wait for a few weeks and have his bile acids checked. |

| Liver problems Sorry to hear about your puppy. The blood test you need to have is bile acid. It's a 12 hour fasting and they draw bllod then you feed your puppy and they do another blood draw in 2 hours. This will tell If it's a liver problem. If the results are abnormal then the next step is a CT Scan to see if it's liver shunt. My little girl Maggie just had her liver shunt conformed and is going for surgery on Friday. Good luck and if you have any questions I'm here for you both. Janice and Maggie Diagnosed Liver Shunt |
