New To Site w/ Shaking Baby!! Hi everyone! I am new member to the site (first post). I have read through all the postings about shaking Yorkies and mine is still not doing well. I have a little male Yorkie about 4 lbs (Mojo). He started yesterday not eating much and just laying around the house and barely moving - even having a hard time walking (can't make it up steps at all). Late yesterday, he started shaking...I read all the posts and gave him NutriCal and around midnight, he finally ate some rice and boiled chicken/chicken broth...he was up all night, shaking, etc. He had not used the bathroom until about 30 minutes ago. It was very little and runny...knwo he is probably ready to finally "go" since he hasn't in two days. We go to the vet in a few hours. What can I suggest to them....x-ray (to make sure there is no blockage), etc? If anyone could tell me what to expect at the vet or what ideas to offer to them, that would be helpful. I live in a very small rural area and the vets around here are mainly farm vets.....yikes! I know! He is a big fan of Greenies and Dingo Bones....but not anymore (not worth losing him over a favorite treat)! - if you have good ideas on new treats to give (my little guy is picking), that would be wonderful! Thank you very much from a very worried mommy! Jenn and Hudsons Magical Mojo |
Aww, i hope your little guy feels better. I'm really glad to hear your taking him to the vet and let us know how it goes!? As for the Greenies, they're great for his teeth, just watch how often you give them to him. I give mine Greenies 2 times a week. As for Dingo Bones, i have never heard of them. But i know Bully Sticks are Great and safe for Yorkies plus they love them. Good luck at the vet, and let us know how the little guy does. |
Oh Jen I am so sorry to hear about your baby! :( If you think the vet does not really know that much about yorkies or small dogs, you should probobly mention what YOU know about the hypoglosemia (sp)? and stuff like that. You mentioned "greenies".....hmmmmm was he eating them before he got sick? He may have a problem from them. I would mention that also. Did you look at his butt to make sure that he doesnt have any poop blocking his bumm? That happened to Louie when I first got him and it made him so sick so the vet pulled it out and he was fine....he said it was like a cork stuck in there and it made him sick..other than that I really dont know what else to tell you. sorry Hun. Good Luck and keep us posted! :getwellso |
With the shaking and the other ways he was acting it sounds like he had a hypoglycemic episode. Keep giving him the nutrical. With the runny stools I wonder if he has coccidia too. It is a common infection young pups get. Is he still shaking or does the nutrical seem to help him at all? |
Oh I hope he feels better.....please post an update after your vet visit. Hope he is ok! |
My prayers are with you and your little guy! I hope he feels better soon!! Let us know what the vet says! |
Sounds similar to what i experienced with Sirius over the weekend- he was lifeless, pooping funky, not eating- mild shakes, he def had a hypoglycemic episode and it was super scary. but he is feeling much better now :) get your baby to the vet ASAP. tell your vet every symptom he has. The rice works great to get their poop back to normal and the nutrical will help. make sure hes drinking water- the little guys can dehydrated from the diarhea [sp] my vet and YT members suggested pedialyte, but check with vet first of course. good luck and i hope he feels better<3<3<3 once he feels better, be ready for some serious yorkie kisses :] |
Hudsons Magical Mojo --Vet Update I have to say....what a wonderful group this is! Thank you all for your thoughts and your concerns.....as soon as I get more time and my baby is better, I will post more pictures for you all to see this little cutie! Okay, the vet is keeping Mojo for a few hours. The vet tried to get a poo sample, but there was nothing in there to get, she said that she tried pretty far and still nothing. AND his little belly was so tight and full! I told her everything....can't climb his little stairs to the bed/couch, not going to bathroom (#1 alittle, but no #2 until this morning & it was runny and very little), panting constantly, shaking on and off, not moving, not eating much, etc. I told her that I had given him NutriCal last night because I didn't want him to go into shock or anything and that he finally ate a very small amount around midnight. I did give him more NutriCal this morning, he normally likes it, but this morning, he didn't want it. I asked about the chewies we give him and she said that Greenies were perfectly safe for dogs...even though I mentioned the numerous articles I had read on it. She said that she wasn't for sure on the Dingo Bones, but I almost think they are a rawhide bone with a bacon flavor in the middle - anyway, those will no longer be given! I told her that he does have an aggression when it comes to his food...he seems to have to have someone standing there for him to eat....like he wants to play/fight over the food....don't know where this would come from or how we can fix it. I wonder if the small Greenies "bits" would be better for him? I know he chews the Petite bones fast.....unless he hides them. Anyway, the vet is keeping him because she said that she would "clean his bowels out" and go from there.....she said that normally if there was blockage, he would be throwing up what little he eats....is this the case? She said that she would also do the x-ray (depending on the "cleaning"). Oh, she did say that he would be on an IV to get fluids back too. I will have to wait three hours to hear back from them....if no response then, I am to call. Wish us luck and pray that it isn't something serious! (She said it might just be a bad cause of constipation, but atleast they are working on all angles...not just blowing it off). Course, I am anal when it comes to this little guy.....they know that too! Thanks again and sorry for the long post....just wanted to share all they said and that happend to maybe get answers and/or help others. Jenn and Hudsons Magical Mojo |
Thats good that the vet is keeping him hopefully they can give you some answers as to whats wrong with him. I will keep him in my thoughts and give us an update when you can. My pup had to have an injection of IV fluids when he was little so that is normal for them to do when they are sick like that. |
What a great mommy you are and I just know he will be himself in no time. With a mom like you who has taken care of this problem so fast, I'm sure he'll be home in no time. It probably is just some kind of poop blockage or maybe he's just being a little stubborn...little buggers, can't wait to see pictures of him. |
Opps...forgot Sorry, I did want to mention that he didn't have any poo clogging his little behind (course, I think I pretty much said that in the vet exam part of my post)....BUT I did have a question about that.......although that isn't the case now, he has had that problem before.....but he didn't get sick from it, I cleaned out and he was fine after that. (Thank goodness). :D What causes that to happen....did the vet say anything about or what we can do to prevent it? I know it doesn't happen often, but we want our little babies to be happy and in comfort! I will post again with the outcome! Thanks again to you all! Jenn & Hudsons Magical Mojo |
I know your vet told you greenies are safe but many vets have said they are not. Greenies and the dingo's can cause blockage because they are very hard to digest especially by small dogs. If the vet doesn't specialize in small dogs, they might think it's safe because it's ok for bigger dogs. It can cause blockage in our little guys. |
Alot of things can cause it like diet or stress. My male got diahrea when he was 7 weeks old and then it followed up with constipation. When he had the diahrea it was so thin they couldnt get a stool sample. Thats when they gave him an injection of IV fluids and put him on meds. Your vet will probably put your dog on some type of antibiotic too. Little pups can get sick really easily. |
Im glad to hear he's doing okay- im no vet or expert, but i would prob guess that it is the greenies and dingo bones that causing him some GI issues. Once Siri didnt feel good, he wouldnt eat ANYTHING, not even his nutrical. them not eating and getting all the vitamins and stuff they need causes the hypo and makes them listless, once he starts eating and drinking [and pooing  ] you will both be relieved<3<3keep us updated<33 |
I think you should try giving him 2ml of karo syrup. Even though he may not be going thru a hypoglycemic episode, he may need his bloodsugar level higher. I was instructed to do this if my puppy was ever lethargic. |
Thank you so much for the update.....and we like long updates, LOL!!! Can't wait to see what else the vet says!!! About the greenies, I quit giving them to mine. I think for such a small dog like yours you may be better off giving the little greenie bits instead of the big ones, ESPECIALLY if he gulps it! |
Olivia's favorite treats are Honey Nut Cheerios and bully sticks. Bully sticks are a great alternative to greenies because it's something your little guy will be able to chew on for a while. (Olivia's last forever!) Cheerios are a great training treat and great for the "too cute" moments when you just want to reward them for being so darn loveable! They're small so they won't fill up your little guy too quickly. Good luck with your little one- I hope everything is okay. |
Well, louies butt got clogged because of all his hair got in the way.....so now i make sure to keep that area clean shaven. |
SO good to hear your update. I hope everything is ok....let us know! :) |
My little baby is HOME....for tonight! :D Yippee....my little Mojo is home for now!! :D Okay, here's the scoop (well, what I can tell you anyway). I couldn't pick him up until after 6pm (what they told me when they called at 3pm) :( So, of course, when I got there, none of the three vets where there, just one attendent, so I didn't get much info..... (didn't they think of this)? I seen the x-rays and they were normal, there was alittle patch of gas, but no blockage that we could see. They kept him on fluids and gave him an ennima (sp). She said NO food, water, NutriCal tonight or in the morning... he is to go back in the morning for more fluids. I asked about being worried about getting dehydrated or low blood sugar, but she said no. If he shakes, etc. tonight, they will have to do another x-ray using some kind of dye or something...to get a better vision of things. OR even if this happens again in the next few days. Atleast they are on top of it and doing more then I thought they would! Atleast, (maybe) I can get some sleep tonight! I will post again in the morning! Thank you to all for thinking of us! :thumbs up Jenn & Mojo Tried to upload pictures, but they were too large...will try again later. |
How is Mojo today? Just a thought, has your vet suggested doing a complete blood profile. It is a good thing to have one done on all Yorkies to have base line numbers just in case there is ever a question of Liver Shunt. |
Blood Tests Yes, I told the vet to do anything and everything that would benefit little Mojo and that would help with this situation. They did a Complete Blood Count, a General Profile and a Lipase.....which, to be honest, I really do NOT know what any of those mean, but I know that the vet said that they were needed and would be of use down the line. (new puppy momma, so not certain on what all is done to these litte ones) :embarasse They also gave him Amoxidrops too, which the attendent wasn't certain on why he needed these, since he didn't have a fever..... I just hate giving medicine out when I don't know what it is for! BUT, I guess like any doctor, they give out antibiotics for any and everything anymore! Mojo had only one little "shake" right after we brought him home ...it didn't even last a minute (course, I wrote it down anyway :teeth: ) - that might have been from being out in this cold, chilly air! He has made two poo-poo trips outside......and BOY were they yucky!! (my daughter said it looked like melted chocolate) - I hope this is normal after an enema (have never had one myself, so don't know)! :p Just hope that doesn't last long! I am heading for bed....hope tonight I can sleep with minimal worries! :yorkietal I will keep you all posted! - hope it is good news at the vet again tomorrow! Wish us luck! (Although, it would be nice to know what cold have caused this, BUT I will be happy for it to be over with, nonetheless)! Jenn & Hudsons Magical Mojo :girl: :aimeeyork |
Thanks for the update, I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers . Hope you both get a good rest tonight. |
I would suspect that a good vet (even a larger animal vet) may have a good idea what's wrong with your little pup --- if you describe his symptoms and tell him what's been going on. Furthermore - your vet has many sources he can turn to if he needs further information. I'm sure he also knows many small animal vets he can call if he needs to. Remember - not always, but certainly most of the time - we, small animals, and larger animals have a lot in common - including most of our health problems. I read about few problems here that aren't also seen in larger animals. Good luck! And keep in touch. |
I hope Mojo is better today!!! Please update on his situation!!! He will be on my mind!!! Prayers coming your way!!! |
Okay, I have to say this. I don't give a horse's patoot about the vet or anyone saying Greenies are okay for these buggers unless you stay right with them and take it away after 20 mins or so. You all know LuvMyYorkies who has had so many tragedies this past week. She also has a little girl who nearly died and had to have a feeding tube inserted over a greenie. It did NOT get into her intestine and block it. The greenie became stuck in the esophagus and caused irrepairable damage--paralyzed the area, thickened it and ballooned it out. She has to eat gruel-consistency food or liquids for the rest of her life. Helen was told greenies would be safe for the dogs. We now use the bright green rubber-type Greenies but not rawhide or Greenies will be found in our homes. It is not worth the chance of damage to our babies because there are many more treats that really are safe... |
I totally agree with Whispersmom about the greenies!! Despite what the vet said and much our babies like them, anything that is not 100% digestible is a no-no!! I hope to hear good news about Mojo today....please keep us posted on how he is feeling as we are thinking about him. |
Jenn, I just read your thread and want to add my get well wishes for Mojo...looking forward to the next update, and hope it will be a good one! :aimeeyork |
Update on my little Mojo Hello everyone and thanks for all of your concerns and thoughts! We didn't get much rest last night (so tired today, it has been two nights with little sleep), BUT I am not complaining....that is what momma's do! Mojo got up just about every hour with runny, slightly bloody poo. He didn't shake, but did a little shiver about three times between 8pm and 6am this morning. I could tell that he was already feeling better (even with the IV needle still in a cast and for being totally cleaned out yesterday) - I know how I feel after a bout of the runs! YUCK! Atleast, he is going to the bathroom now and his tummy is not tight and bloated! He did give some kisses and did some wagging and walked around good (alittle hard with the cast, but could get around - not like the other day). He is at the vet today for more fluids and we will go from there. So, no new news until the vet calls back this afternoon. I kept a detailed list (including times, etc) of everything that happened with Mojo last night (she loved that). I didn't get to ask her about the patch of gas that showed up on the x-ray (it was by his shoulder/chest). I wanted to ask if she thought that might be why he seems to be stuffy all the time. I will do that when I get their call. I also took in every food, chewie, treat, etc. that I give him and she pointed out the ones that wouldn't be good (Dingo bones) and the ones that she thought were good (PupCorn). I still agree with all of you who mention Greenies, even though the vet seems to think they are okay, these are out of our house! I brush Mojo's teeth, so I know the importance of Yorkies teeth, but I don't think a chew that is suppose to help his teeth and that can cause so much harm is for us! I asked about him inhaling his food, but she said that there was really nothing you can do for that. We give him Royal Canine Yorkshire Formula (that only food we could find that he liked). A friend suggested mixing alittle wet food or even water in it to help slow down his eating...and they said that would help too with constipation and such...any thoughts on that? I like our vet, so I hope that I didn't offend any vets out there (looking back over a recent post from someone). I was just concerned that I was given little to no information and when I got there, it was only an attendent who didn't know much about what they had done with Mojo.... I do hate giving medicine out when I have know clue why it is needed. Also, I "freak" out when I see blood coming from anywhere, but the vet seemed to think that was normal this morning (he had done that after his enema and exam yesterday). The vet we see is a farm vet (goes to farms, etc).....I just wish that I could find a small breed vet - I would just feel better! After all....we want the best for our babies! I am just sooo pleased to see that every test (that I know of and some I don't) are being taken and all ideas are looked at. I have read and heard from people that some vets over look things and just send the babies home with medicine and most of the time...those cases turn out for the worst! It's a shame that happens, but I am glad to have a vet that listens to what I say and is trying to find a reason! Sorry for another long post! I am going to take a nap and wait for the call. I need a good nap...been alittle emotional lately! Jenn & Mojo |

As for gulping food. I know that breeders of large breed dogs have a great concern over dogs who gulp their food. It is a health issue for them. What they do is put rather LARGE pebbles or stones in the food dish. Too big for the dog to swallow. While the dog is attempting to move the pebbles around he slows down eating. He can no longer gulp his food. I have heard this works great for large breed dogs. Just a thought. |
