Almost Lost Zach In A Snowdrift

During the blizzard on Jan. 2 we almost lost Zach in a snowdrift. We let the dogs in the back to do their thing and to play. We usually go out with them but this time we stupidly didn't. A few minutes later all the dogs came in except for Zach. We ran out to the back and couldn't see him but we heard him barking and crying. We were in a panic. We let the other dogs out hoping they would find him and sure enough they all went to this one spot and started barking. We ran over to the spot and we didn't see anything except a big mound of snow all of a sudden the mound started moving and we started digging like crazy and there was Zach frozen and shaking like a leaf. We wrapped him up in a warm blanket and rushed him to the emergency. They said he was going to be fine and gave him some antibobiotics. I feel so guilty I shold have been out there with him. We never never let them out in the back without watching him. Just one mistake could have cost him his life. The vet said that in another few minutes we would have lost him from hypothermia Thank God for our basset hounds and their great noses. Not only did they find him they also dug him out with us. Never will they be let out alone again. I hope nobody else will be a stupid as we were.

OMG!!! Oh wow - I have never thought of this happening in the major snow going on but how EASY it would be to happen!

you are NOT stupid at all! I grew up in the east coast and in all those years never dreamed something like this could happen -

You just gave everyone a huge warning! and I am so so glad you were so quick on your feet and able to save him. That had to be one of the scariest feelings in your life!

hugs - and glad he is ok  and treats for the Bassets!

Attention!!! Good Advice!

Good Reminder...........bump!

Deb1 01-05-2014 04:45 PM

Wow, that had to be so scary! We haven't had very much snow this winter...just extreme cold, which is dangerous in itself! Thank goodness you got to him in the nick of time!

Verbena 01-05-2014 05:14 PM

Wow How scary that was. I am so glad that he is ok. Thanks for posting a warning to others.

jeane 01-05-2014 05:53 PM

how scary// a good reminder for all of us// I am glad that he is ok

Maximo 01-05-2014 06:45 PM

Very scary! I am glad that Zach is okay.

A very good warning to everyone with heavy snow right now.

Marhcarter 01-05-2014 06:56 PM

Very scary! Glad he is OK!

margiepickens 01-05-2014 07:50 PM

Poor little guy. I bet he was scared. Glad he's okay.

maggiefromnj 01-05-2014 08:43 PM

I can see how that could happen. We had 6-8 inches of snow and there were some quite high drifts. I took Maggie out to say Hi to dad when he came home and tried to get her to pee in the tiny area he had cleared for her. She had an idea of trying to head out back for some reason and just hopped off the driveway into the snow. It was up to her chin! She just stood there in shock! The last time it snowed it was much less and she was able to go into it (thought she doesn't like it at all). I guess she just thought she'd be able to walk in it and find a spot to pee. It was so funny and I felt bad for thinking it was funny. Then when she came in she just ran around the house rubbing her face on the carpet.

But, if I had my back turned I can see how she could have gotten lost or frozen in just a minute, especially if there was a drift.

Happily everything turned out all right for your family, and now you have a story to tell and use to warn others. I would add that people near lakes should be careful as well.

wemple2 01-05-2014 10:25 PM

Oh wow, I would have been terrified...imagine what he was thinking!!! Happy there was a happy ending, it could have been so much worse. Kiss him for me!!!

Marhcarter 01-06-2014 05:19 AM

This is a good reminder with record lows predicted for today across the country. Not just snowdrifts, but making sure our babies are not outside long enough to get too cold. This is the weather where Huey just potties in the garage, not out in the cold. He may run outside for 30 seconds, but he runs right back in!

Cherie6446 01-06-2014 08:01 AM

This is a very scary story. So glad everything turned out ok. How do you think little Zach got into the drift?

I have no idea how he got into the drift. I thought at first it blew off the roof onto him, but I'm really not sure. All I can say is Thank God we realized he was gone right away because I don't know what I would have done if we lost him. As I said before I will always be grateful to my bassets for being there they are the best
We had to bring Zach to the vet last night because he was having a problem in his neck. The vet told us to leave the collar on him for a few days but otherwise he is fine.

Such a sweet pic! I saw this tonight, made me think of this thread again...:D

wisteria 01-07-2014 02:18 AM

Thank goodness he is going to be fine, how scary! things happen so quickly.

Verbena 01-07-2014 07:52 AM

Just checking to see how he is doing?

DBlain 01-08-2014 07:27 AM

wow how scary, glad you found him in time, perhaps he strained his neck trying to dig himself out. My sister lives in the town next to you and has a yorkie and a big fenced in back yard, the yorkie has the run of it when she goes out, I am going to tell her about this thread

lexi43 01-12-2014 12:22 PM

You never know what could happen to your babies even in your own back yard. You think they're safe but so many things can happen. /For example a couple of months ago my friend let her dogs go into the backyard. A day before she had someone remove a large tree from her yard. Well the jerk, instead of filling in the hole covered it with a piece of tarp. Well one of her ran over the tarp and fell into the hole and broke both her hind legs. Thank God she heard her screaming and ran out . She is now in the process of suing the company for the vet bills. It's not going to make her dog feel any better though. It's kind of her fault though because she was aware of the tree removal and should have checked it out before she let the dogs out there. We all make mistakes though. i know I learned my lesson. Zach is just fine now the vet said it was just a strain and he has to wear a collar for a coiuple more weeks.

When I first read this title, I thought this was going to be a funny adventure (the deepest snow drift I have seen here in Houston is 2 inches deep, so I obviously have no experience with a real, dangerous "snow drift" )....after I read the post, OMG!! it was obvious that baby could have easily DIED in that snow!! Thank God for the Bassets.....poor baby! I guess all y'all that are familiar with snow and snow drifts, realize the danger here....thanks for posting and giving me an education!

What a cute pic! Looks like Zach is warm and cozy now.:):) What happened to Zach's neck that he needed the cone of silence? Hope that whatever it is that he heals quickly.

lexi43 01-19-2014 07:44 AM

Just to let everyone who cared enough to ask about Zach that he is doing great. The cone came off his neck and he is back to himself again. I hope we have no more snow this year. I can't take anymore excitement. I find it funny that since the incident with the snowdrift, the hounds follow him around like shadows and they watch everything he does. They also make sure that he right behind them when they come back into the house. Also they don't like when the other dogs get too rough with him which totally annoys Zach because he loves to play rough with the other dogs.

JuliannaB 01-19-2014 08:55 AM

Happy to hear!!! Thanks for the update, 'cause I was wondering. I second the 'no snow' wish for you all who had it bad this time. Cheers!

wemple2 01-19-2014 05:37 PM

Yay for Zach!!! So happy he has come out of this unscathed. Hooray for your other dogs for looking out for him. Don't worry, I don't think anything like this will happen any time real soon. We do live and learn after all.

OMG Another Snowstorm

After what Zach just went through you would think he would not want to go out into the snow again, but there he was by the door trying to get out. You just can't keep him away from the snow. We let him out but we were right there with him and what does he do? He runs into the deepest snow again. This time the hounds followed him wherever he went and we were there watcing.
