Uh-Oh! Luna ate CHOCOLATE!
 
A little less than 30 minutes ago,we think Luna ate one "After Eight(the brand) mint chocolate", an after dinner mint. We're not sure if it was only the wrapper she was eating or if she ate the whole chocolate as well. She had it in her mouth by the time we realized what she was up to.

We're not sure if that is enough to harm her, so I am wondering what I should do? Should I induce vomitting? I am uncertain if there should be any immediate signs of poisioning I should be looking for, or if the symptoms will gradually appear?

I've already checked her heart beat and it's normal. Luna is now, roughly, 6-7 lbs and it was a dark and mint chocolate.

I would bet your baby is fine. It takes more baking dark choc to cause the toxic effects. You might want to look for the number of poison control. They usually have the same info for companion animals..

I think she will be fine also. My dogs have eaten chocolate before (candy bar-type chocolate) and have never had any problems.

My dogs have also eaten worse things than that and survived.....but I won't go into that here.

I don't think the after dinner mints are all chocolate anyway -- don't they just have a chocolate covering and the inside is "mint?"

I would venture to say that the amount of chocolate that your baby got ahold of tonight isn't enough to have done anything horrible. Mine have unfortunately gotten ahold of larger amounts of chocolate (thanks to the 5 yr old that forgot his bedroom floor does not do the same job as the pantry in the kitchen - they do forget sometimes) and it hasn't killed them. The worst thing that has happened is that they have gotten diarrhea. I dont' even think that your's got enough to cause that though. I'd relax but be on the lookout for anything that looks unusual.

I have also heard it is the dark chocolate or the baking chocolate/cocoa that causes the problems. Once, when I was little, I had an 8 pound poodle eat an entire (solid) chocolate bunny out of my Easter basket while we were gone to church and she was fine. That was before we even knew all the food dangers for pets. I know you cant help but worry but I think Luna will be fine. :)
