Kidney failure in my 9y/o yorkie Hi, my name is Shawn and I found this forum from frantically searching the Internet for information about kidney failure in Yorkies. My baby was vomiting a few days ago and barely eating. So, finally I took her to the vet, blood test was given and he informed me that her kidneys are in pretty bad shape. She is on the iv drip and her numbers didn't go down as allow as the vet would of liked them to, after the first 24 hours. I will be going to see her in the morning to see how things are going. I'm a nervous wreck at the moment because the vet is making it sound like I should put my baby to sleep. Every time I think about it, I start crying hysterically! I've had her since she was a puppy and she's my companion, I can't imagine having to say good bye to her. I'm open to any suggestions from anyone who has been through this, I'm willing to try anything. Her numbers were very high, her creatinine was at a 10.7 and has come down to a 8.1 I can't remember the other numbers, I just remember the vet saying that this number was extremely high. |
I am so sorry about your baby being ill....maybe a second opinion...I see you are in Texas...we have one of the finest vet schools available, Texas A&M....You could get your vet to recommend a specialist there for a second opinion, they have the best equipment for diagnosising, and they would be able to put your mind at rest, at least verifying there is nothing more that can be done for her, or there are other options that could buy you more time. Keep us posted with your baby's progress and your decision....God bless you sweetie and the emotional turmoil you are now in with your baby. |
I'm sorry your little one is so sick. I will keep you and your furbaby in my prayers. Please keep us posted. |

Hello and welcome to YT. I send some of my strength to help you through this difficult time. Big hugs |
So sorry that your baby is ill. I don't have words of wisdom but know that we are sending best wishes for a good outcome. |
I am sorry you are dealing with a sick pup. I have had a few pups that were in renal failure and they often do respond to treatment. When their levels are elevated like your pup's are now, the important thing is fluids, fluids, fluids....it is like a type of dialysis. From what you posted, it looks like the numbers are coming down, so hopefully they will continue to do so. This could take a few days! After that, the most important thing for your pup will be diet. I would strongly suggest that you speak with your vet about what diet is best. What I have used in the past are Hill's K/D and Purina N/F. I found that the N/F was liked more by my pups. If you don't mind home cooking, you could do a consult with a vet nutrionist. I would not try to concoct my own diet....it is very important to get the diet right! Often these pups are very nauseous....there is a medication that helps with that...it is Mirtazapine. You can ask your vet about that. I will pray for you and for your pup. I hope the fluids continue to help. I have maintained pups for years when they had renal failure....of course sometimes it does not respond well...but I wanted you to know that sometimes it will. Please keep us posted! |
Hi, everyone I just wanted to let you know that things didn't get better for my Tink and I took her to the rainbow bridge. Her levels went up a bit and the vet advised me that that wasn't good at all. When I saw her, I heard her shallow breathing and how weak she was. She was just staring at me as I held her in my arms. This is the hardest thing that I've done in my life. She's out of the pain now:( I will never forget my first love, I miss her terribly:( I\'m,a mess right now, I keep bursting into tears |
I\'m so sorry for the loss of your precious baby. She will forever be in your heart. I know how painful it was for you and how much you are hurting. You\'ll be in my prayers tonight. Rest in peace, precious Tink. Your mommy loved you with all of her heart and you will never be forgotten. |

Oh, I am so sorry for your loss. I hope you know that you did all that you could and that final act was one of love. Your sweet Tink is pain free now .. and one day you will meet again. In time your happy memories will help to heal the pain that you now feel. I have been there and it is awful...you will be in my thoughts and prayers. RIP Tink. |
Im so sorry for your loss. I hope that you will find comfort here with those of us that know how you feel. |
I am so sorry to hear about Tink. |
Thank you all for your sweet words they mean SO much to me and Tink:( she will forever be in my heart as my first true love. I find deep comfort from the kind words and stories that I\'ve been reading this forum. Yorkies are amazing dogs and I hope to one day have one again. However, I fear that if I had another yorkie, that I would always think of Tink whenever I looked at it. Is it strange to feel that way?! Or are these normal thoughts? |
I am so very sorry for your loss. My heart breaks for you. as I know all to well the pain of losing a little furbaby. Your little one is at peace now. Even though I lost my last little yorkie 4 years ago, I still think about her a lot. She was the light of my life. So very different from the other 2 I\'ve had. I have Abby now and she is so very different from Kayla. It took a while for me to get another one but am so glad I did. I really don\'t know what I would do without a little yorkie by my side. Please take care. I\'ll keep you in my prayers. |
