| We love our little man - please help, liver shunt Hi I am new to the site, my husband and myself bought ourselves this little tea cup yorkie that has taken over our hearts. We bought him last Sunday on Thursday he started to get real lazy and would eat. We know early in the morning something was not right. We took him to a emergency clinic and we were told that he was suffering from low sugars, they kept him over night and said that his sugars were back up and sent us home with nutri cal to give him and told us to forse feed him,, I stayed up all night and faithfully fed him every 2 hours, by 4 am he couldn't stand up so we knew again something was wrong. When we went back to the emergency clinic at 5 his sugars were back to 22 again. So again he was put on Iv and has been there for 2 night still not eating on his own. The vet called last night wanting to run more test when he called us back he told us that he has liver shunt. And we should have him operated on. We are just worried about what kind and quality of life that lite guy would have....if anyone have any thought about this we would love to hear from you Thanks again |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I'm so sorry no one has replied to this - sometimes around the holidays we get scarce here. I'm also very sorry to hear about your precious new baby. Sadly, liver shunt runs in yorkies and we've had so many members here have to face what you're facing. I can't give great advice in this area since I haven't been through it, but I know others will share their knowledge and offer support. I'm going to move your thread to the "SICK / EMERG" section so it gets the proper attention. I'll be keeping you in my thoughts and looking for updates. Hang in there .

| How old is your baby? The safest route would probably be o transfer your pup to the critical care dept of a specialty hospital/vet school with a surgeon who has extensive experience with LS. Surgery is very successful for most dogs, but given that this isa very yong pup you will needva surgeon with extensive experience. Unfortunately this is not uncommon in yorkies. I'm sorry.

| I'm not sure what Spring Hill you live in. If it is Spring Hill, TN then your baby should be taken to Univ. of TN. They are the experts in luver shunt. If you are in FL then the best bet is probably the get school there.

| Welcome to YT! I just sent an email to a YT member who has been through liver shunt surgery and she is very knowledgable and helpful. Hopefully she will be around to help you. There are quite a few members who have liver shunt pups. I hope that all goes well with your puppy.

♥Love My 3 Furrbutts♥ Donating Member | I am saddened to read this. I have no real advice to give you other than have her seen by a specialist in your area. Is there a vet school you can take her too? You have been given some excellent advice, I pray your little one can be seen by a specialist and has surgery to correct this, if this is indeed the problem. I'm so sorry you and your little one are going through this. (((HUGGZZ))) to you.
