Help puppy swallowed a treat whole now acting strange
 

I have a 12 week old pup that swallowed part of a hard chicken treat whole last night. Today he is acting really lethargic. He is still drinking fine but he hasn't eaten anything:( his gums are still pink. Is there anything. I can do aside from taking him to the emergency vet?

Its doubtful the treat is actually stuck.

What are the ingredients?

Many dogs dont do well on grains especially corn.

You need nutrical on hand a pup at this age especially a yorkie needs small frequent meals or hypoglycemia can happen and it is life threatening.

I don't think you need to rush to the er just yet but this pup needs a raise in blood sugar and watch closely for allergic reaction.

Boiled chick breast is the best treat for a pup this age.

Mine also love baby carrots and sweet potatoe bites, and any kind of melon.

I don't know if there is anything you can do at home. But from some of the things I have read I think it may be best to take him/her to the vet, because if it some type of blockage nothing you do at home will help. Always better to be safe than sorry. But maybe someone else can offer up more advice?

It could have scratched his throat going down if it was whole and it's a little swollen, sore. Might let the vet have a looksee.

I have absolutely no problem bringing him to the vet but would rather bring him in the morning the er vet in my area is outrageous. Anytime that I have been there it has been no less than $500. I will if he seems worse. It was an all natural treat wouldn't the stomach acids break it down? Unless it passed through and is possibly stuck somewhere else along the way??? When he swallowed the treat I could tell it was caught in his throat it was not a huge piece about the size of a dime. I just wondered if there was something I could try to help him to feel better the meantime until morning?

I prefer soft treats.

Corn chips can scratch our throats.

Even going to the grocery store and getting some karo syrup just for tonight is absolutely critical. As in do it now. If your pup goes into a hypohlycemic shock you nay only hace minutes to make it to the ER.

Your pup has been too long without food.

Yeah, if it stuck there for a bit, it probably scratched the throat membranes. It likely did dissolve in the gastric juices of the stomach and passed on but the throat is probably still sore & tender & why the puppy acts lethargic & doesn't want to eat, just drink water. But, to be on the safe side and since we're not vets, a professional opinion would be in order if the little guy is still feeling punk. If he's not eating, you might stick some Nutrical or its equivalent in his little mouth every so often to get some nutrients, energy & glucose into him until he can see the vet. Lack of food can cause a dog to become lethargic. If he's a very tiny/young puppy, you need to be concerned about hypoglycemia in a puppy not eating and/or losing fluids.

He did eat some wet food and I gave him some nutrical. He has perked up a little bit. I'm thinking his throat may have been scratched and his hard food was not going down easy for him. I did try earlier to get him to eat some soft food and he wouldn't but he did eat some a little bit ago.

I am hoping this was not chicken jerky....not only because of all problems with jerky but because it is very sharp and jagged...it can really do damage to not only soft tissue in the mouth, but also the esophagus....I think I own a wing in the ER vet hospital....but I dont waste time when one of mine acts strange....especially when it involves lethargy....I think I would have already been to the vet, just to keep from having to go the ER, in the middle of the night! I hate that!! ....I like crisis prevention rather than crisis management....I would rather go in early and it is nothing or barely developing into something, instead of rushing in during an emergency and trying to jerk that baby back from the jaws of death..... I will pray your baby is well and does just fine overnight...even improves and it is nothing...but I agree, you need to get SOMETHING into that baby to stabilize blood sugar. I would try chicken baby food...they will lick that off your finger when they wont take much of anything else....and be sure the baby isnt getting dehydrated....
I had to come back and just say I think you need to take the baby into the vet....my personal opinion.....

That's a releif.

You can always take your pup in during scheduled hours or call to ask the vet about the throat issue.

Most importantly is regular eating drinking signs of lethary vommiting diarriah or a possible serious injury, seizure for an er appointment.

He threw up this morning so I brought him to the vet. They couldn't find any thing wrong but gave him an antiinflamatory and subcontaneus fluids. He stayed the whole day to be monitored but he still is not feeling well:( So back again if hes not better.

So glad you got him in and checked out. Hopefully he\'ll get to feeling better and get his energy back soon.

Has the vet dobe blood work and fecals on him?

Did the vet do any xrays? ....to see if anything was lodged in any area it shouldnt be....
