| Weak/Collapsing Trachea Worsening with Excitement Hi Everyone, My Max (5 years old), was at the vet this morning after a month of increasingly awful coughing/gagging after excitement. We have had many conversations about tracheas with the vet about our other yorkie, Maggie, but this was the first issue we've seen with Max. He's never exhibited symptoms until about a month ago. After insanely barking out our sliding glass door (we live at an apartment with heavy walking/doggie traffic) we will gag for quite awhile. This morning I had enough of watching him and it has gotten much worse recently. Took him to the vet and the doctor lightly pressed on his trachea to recreate the symptoms. As I've learned, there's not much they can do to help relieve the problem but keeping him calm is pretty key. This is where I need some advice. We've been looking into getting a Scatmat strip to put in front of the sliding glass door so he cannot look out. The vet suggested the citronella collar for barking. Has anyone had any experience with either? I ordered the collar this morning as it wasn't overly expensive. Any other remedies to keep your doggie calm? Max has an over abundance of anxiety and has since we got him. We've always just accepted how crazy he is and have done our best to correct it daily. Now, it's making him uncomfortable with this gagging. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! PS- he is having a dental done in a month or so, and the vet said they would x-ray him then to get a baseline of the severity of the trachea so they can compare it in the future.

| IMO I'd be afraid the citronella would be irritating and cause worse attacks. I'd stick with the scat mat.

| I know what you are going through. We have literally tried and bought everything under the sun for Kayla and nothing helps. She can only go out in the backyard. That is the only place she does not panic. Taking her to the vet is a nightmare. They said to bring her in for shots etc. when the weather is cool. We run a humidifer all the time and let her sleep with a fan blowing right on her. I have tired to help her loose weight but that is hard. This little munchkin loves to eat. When she does have one of her spells I just hold her and rub very gently up and down on her throat and that seems to help. We have even sedated her to take her to the vet and nothing works. I have one of the ice mats that helps some but fever is a real concern. Hers has hit 106 before. We thought we had lost her. They say to keep the house dusted, no spray any perfume sprays. No candles. I hope this helps and probably alot of it you know. As far as barking at everything, its hard. I have to just put her in the kennel sometimes to settle her down. Good luck and hope your baby gets better. If you know something that we should be doing I would appreciate any input. |

| Well, I think we're going back to the vet this morning. In the middle of the night, max had another half hour episode and there was no excitement to cause it. Then, again at 635 this morning. Something just doesn't seem right...

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am sorry to hear about Max. I hope the vet can give you some help on keeping him calm and maybe some medicine to help with the CT. I had a yorkie with CT and it is hard to watch them go through that. I will keep him in my prayers.

| I called the vet at 7:30 when they opened. They had a message saying that they were out until 2pm for a staff meeting. At the moment, Max was gagging/coughing so I slightly panicked and called the vet across the street from me that also has fabulous reviews. They were more than accommodating and had me bring Max in immediately. Of course, my vet called me back when I was on my way there (I had left a voicemail), but I kindly let them know I was on my way to another place and I will fax them the records. As much as it killed me, I recorded Max during one of his episodes this morning so I could show the vet if he couldn't recreate the issue. This seemed to be helpful. The new vet listened very carefully to Max's heart and lungs and said that everything sounded great. He pushed on Max's trachea (harder than our usual vet did yesterday) and it didn't make him cough/gag. I couldn't believe it! He said he isn't ruling out the weak/collapsing trachea at all, but he decided to give me an antibiotic to treat any kind of infection, including KC. This was Doxy. Then, also gave me Tem-something-P (I don't have it sitting in front of me right now) to help with inflammation from allergies, etc. He's hoping that these two medicines will give Max some relief and clear it up. If they don't, it'll be quite obvious that it IS a trachea issue. He did say that it IS quite uncommon for a weak/collapsing trachea to present so acutely and he's skeptical that this is the main issue. I, too, felt that it was strange that this issue had presented itself for the first time in 5 years of Max's life, but you never know. I'm praying the vet is right and it is something that is curable. We have very minor trachea issues with Maggie but have never had x-rays done in her 7.5 years of life. It doesn't happen very often and her "reverse sneezing" is less scary than Max's "gagging". Please pray for us that the medication does help and something curable is affecting Max instead of a major trachea issue :-/

| I'm glad you were able to get him into another vet and that you got a second opinion. I'm really hoping that it's Kennel Cough and not a collapsing trachea... Max will be in my thoughts.

| My sister-in-law got citronella collars for her Benji type dog and her labradoodle puppy to remind them not to bark and she said it didn't take long at all to train them both (less than two weeks). Citronella is a plant we grow in our garden, but it would be reasonable to be cautious if your dog has allergies to plants and pollens. |
