anaphylactoid reaction from booster shot

Today our little 2 year old BoBo went in to get his boosters for DHLP and rabies...within several minutes he threw up, and while driving home he continued to throw up. We called the vet and they said that this was a normal reaction to the vaccines. He then began to have diarrhea, and by that time the vet's office had already closed..he began spewing blood from his butt and we got him into a different vet's office...they told us that it was the most severe reaction to vaccines that they have seen in their 23 years in veterinary practice, and that BoBo might not make it. Him gums were gray and white. They hooked him up to an IV and stabilized him and sent him to the emergency clinic.

Now his liver enzymes are 3x higher, his temperature is 99.3 degrees, gums are pink, and his blood is slowing beginning to clot again. The doctor says so far so good, and it *seems* like we're out of the woods for now, but it's hard to say. They are going to put him on antibiotics and a liver repairing medication..

Does anyone have any experience on this?? I was devastated when they said BoBo might not make it, and I'm glad he's stable now..but I'm still nervous..please pray for little BoBo! :(

Too many vaccines all at one time can overload their system. Each vaccine is strong enough to immunize a 100 pound dog. Also when given all at the same time, you now don't know which one caused the reaction (or if it was just one). Many on here follow Dr Dodds vaccine protocol. Why was your pup being vaccinated? After the puppy series and the 1 year boosters, he would have been good for 3 years (in most states). I wouldn't get him vaccinated anymore, ever... praying Bobo recovers quickly....

I am so so sorry to hear about the horrible time you and poor BoBo have had!
My vet that I have used for years messed up this time, and even though I had it written down and told them that I definitely did not want to have all the vaccinations done on one visit, when they left the room with them, they made a mistake and gave both of my tiny babies everything at once. They also gave my tiniest one an additional bordatella that she had already had done for the year. I was livid! For this reason, I am in the process of finding another regular vet. I use our vet school for any specialty issues or any emergencies, and I might switch to them as my regular vet also.

I didn't want their vaccines all done at once bc I was afraid of overloading their systems. And from the research I've done on it, I believe that adverse reactions go up dramatically when multiple vaccinations are done at once. I can tell you that my dogs were as sick as I had ever seen them, and it thoroughly scared me. But, they certainly wren't as bad as what you and BoBo have had to go through.

I am so glad your baby is doing better, and I will say continued prayers that he continues to improve!!! I know this had to be horrible for you, and again, I am so sorry you and BoBo have had to go through this!

I am praying BoBo makes a full recovery. I'm so sorry he is going through this. I just have to question why some vets don't use common sense when it comes to vaccinations and small dogs. Please let us know how BoBo is doing today.

BoBo never got his year 1 boosters, he only had his puppy immunizations, so the vet suggested getting the vaccinations. I won't be getting him or my other dogs vaccinated again.....too scary..thanks everyone for the kind words.

You can get a waver from the vet that he not get vaccinations because of the reaction and I would keep on file the documentation he was hospitalized because of a severe reaction

ironmike86 08-26-2012 06:45 AM

2 booster could have been overload? But whatever happened the Vet should have watched the dog if he was throwing up. It's a natural reaction when they are poisoned. I wouldn't go back if I had a choice. Find a new vet. The only reason you need the Vet after shots is to monitor them otherwise why have them give the shot?? I dont think they did there job. JMO

Above is soooooooo right!!! It upsets me so much to read things like this, what happened to this poor baby!!!! We go to vets (and doctors!)trusting them to make the best decisions for our pets and loved ones. Unfortunately, we must be educated and up to date on what is going on in medicine, so we can be advocates for our loved ones. The majority of vet schools have apparently adopted Dr.Dodds vaccines protocol. The new protocol must be made available to people! There are alot of vets, I do not have statistical information, but there are vets out there that now do titers before vaccinating. The vaccines are NOT dosage adjusted for each individual dog. two pound, four pound, six pound, 10 pound, 30 pound, 60 pound, 100 pound dogs ALL receive the SAME injection!!! Rabies should NEVER be given with any other shots. I wish someone would have advertising on TV about over vaccinating our dogs...maybe AKC or HSUS or PETA.....some of these animal focus groups, could do some REAL public service and teach people about over vaccinating pets. Intersperse the over played ads of those poor pitiful dogs, to informational ads that are aimed at actually HELPING pet owners provide care for their pets and make correct decisions about THEIR OWN pets.....pets that are adored and are being adversely affected by "routine" vet practices. If these people REALLY have the well being of animals as their primary motivating factor in collecting millions of dollars annually, at least INCLUDE ads that TEACH people evidenced based protocols for vaccinating our pets! Breeders should be teaching their buyers these protocols. They should be teaching their buyers to select vets that utilize these practices. They SHOULD be teaching their buyers THEY HAVE THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO DO SOMETHING!!! If your vet wants to pile all those shots into one visit, every year, you have the RESPONSIBILITY AS A RESPONSIBLE PET OWNER TO BE AN ADVOCATE FOR YOUR BABY....JUST SAY NO!!!!!! If your vet will not work with you as an educated consumer, CHANGE VETS!!!

ironmike86 08-26-2012 06:59 AM

^^^^ ditto "Yorkiemom" said. Vets work for you. You don't need to do what they say. We get educated so we can make a choice or at least understand what they are trying to do. Or at least have a Vet explain it better??? JMO

Yorkiemom1 08-26-2012 07:02 AM

I want to add one thing for every one of us to keep in mind as you select your vet (just as you select your doctors!)....THEY ARE WHAT STANDS BETWEEN YOUR PET AND DEATH'S DOOR....You had better be knowledgable enough on your pets health care, to at least RECOGNIZE decisions that are maybe are not current with evidenced based outcomes.

I know that a dog can have a reaction this year when the last 4 or 5 years shots didnt bother them at all. I always try to schedule shots as early in the day as possible and never on a Friday or Saturday. I also dont leave the vets office until atleast 20mins has passed, giving time for an imediate reaction. This give room in the day if there is an emergency with a reaction.
I know that not everyone can do this with their schedules, but this has worked best for me not only with the furbabys but I did the same thing with my children.
I hope that BoBo will be ok!!!!

BoBo's home (:

This vet has been great until this set of vaccinations. He was there for at least 10 minutes to pay and all that before leaving, but he didn't start throwing up until we got in the car. In the original post I said within a few minutes..I didn't get the story straight because BoBo is my brother's dog and he was the one who took BoBo..I wasn't there. The vet had always helped BoBo and has been his vet for quite a while, so we trusted him..We went to another vet and they said that this rarely happens and the chances of them getting the disease from not being vaccinated is greater than the risk of the shock itself. NEEDLESS to say, still, we are no longer getting BoBo vaccinated!

The ER vet said that there has been an increase in dogs having this reaction lately since they have released a new type of vaccine..duno much more about it, it's something to think about.

Thanks for all the kind words and suggestions! We will definitely be more wary and do more research before things like this!!

It sounds like you had a good routine for your baby and good vet that has worked with you. Thanks for sharing about the statitcs climing due to a different vaccine, definately something to watch out for.
So glad that BoBo is home and doing better!!!!

GOSH!!! I give my own vaccinations...Pro-Gard 5 vaccines have changed to a "new name", as a result of two pharmaceuticals combining....now Pro-Gard 5 is "NOBIVAC CANINE 1-DAPPv"...supposed to be the same vaccine as the ProGard 5....now I am concerned this "new vaccine" your vet refers to may be this????? Any breeders out there using this replacement for ProGard 5???

I took Lola for a shot on Friday she was due for her distemper and lepto. The vet was ready to do both but I told them No just one, and I will hold her, no going in the back. Because Lola had some discomfort from her lepto a year ago, I now ask for a premed which I thought was benadryl, but they told me it was meloxicam so that is what she got again. She was given the 3 year DHP. She had few treats after the shot and seemed fine, we stayed close to the office and I did a few errands with her. About 30 min after the shot she threw up once, then again, it looked like from the treat so I thought ok treats at the vet not a good idea, then she threw up some bile and was getting agitated, so we went back, the vet said her temp was a little high and gave her the bendrayl we then sat in the waiting room for about half an hour and they took her temp again and it was normal so off we went and aside from her being sleepy all was well. I do think things have changed with vaccines, years ago I liked to save money so I would take my yorkie in and have everything done at once, teeth cleaning, every vaccine under the sun, you name it, it was a one stop shopping appointment and none of them ever had a problem. Could be the dogs but it\'s strange how many reactions there now are. Since I have had Lola I will now only get one vaccine at a time and go early in the day and then stay close to the vets office for the hour following the shot.

I hope your dog\'s numbers all return to normal
