| OP: I don't know this for a fact, but I do believe that Dr. Beale would work with you if money is an issue. At the very least he could speak with you and give you some options. He really is an awesome vet and person!

| Did they do anything for her at all at the ER vet? Does your vet have an answering service? Poor baby.

The key is to look at both things...the cost and the treatment. If they do the wrong treatment to save money, it can be a mess. If they can do the same treatment for less, then it can work.

| OP: If you can afford to make monthly payments, then take a look at the Care Credit site that I posted. Often there is no interest if paid in a certain time frame..or at least the interest is low. You might find a vet who will take payments, but that is rare. You can find out immediately if you are approved. Care Credit is great to have with pups! You never know when something like this can happen.

| Oh man. I am so sorry. Was hoping it was just something small. I hope you don't have to amputate, but do what you have to do to give your baby the best care you can afford. I'll be thinking of you guys.

| Totally agree that it is far from ideal... ...but I'd rather see that happen than a pup euthanized or turned over to rescue. OP, if you fund soeone to fix the leg for less than 2500 and it fails, you could still amputate later. Obviously go with a top surgeon if possible, but if not don't beat yourself up over it. You are doing more than most animal owners would even consider.

| I'm sorry. I'm not trying to be ugly here. Just voicing my opinion on what I would do if this was my pup. I would not amputate if it was fixable. I would make payment arrangements, apply for Credit Care, or sell things I own to pay for it. I have had to put my fair share of vet bills on a credit card. It's part of owning a pet. Not to start an argument but I would turn over to a rescue before I amputated. I know that a rescue would treat her and provide the medical care she needs. I know not everyone will agree. Just my opinion.

| Let me add, I can not imagine why they would offer amputation unless it is a really involved, complicated break...IF IT WAS ME, I would give my baby up to someone that I KNEW could afford to give her the care she needed, rather than have limbs amputated as a "cost effective alternative" rather than a medical necessity....that option just curdles my blood. This is absolutely beyond my scope of reality...... Last edited by Yorkiemom1; 08-19-2012 at 08:38 AM. |

Linda, I hope when OP comes back to update and reads this she will take you up on your kind offer. I know time is of the essence, but do we know any kind of time frame of when this surgery needs to be performed for the best chance of successful repair?

Dr. Beale is wonderful....he will understand if she cannot afford it...and he can suggest ideas I am sure. And, at least she will know exactly what fix is needed! That is SO important. There are vets out there who will short cut and the end result is not good. There are some who can do the same procedures for less...but at least if she goes to Dr. Beale, then she would be comparing apples to apples. I have had two pups come to me after people wasted their money with vets who did the wrong treatment and they still were repairable. It took more money and more extensive treatments (bone grafting), but it was fixed. Of course, the longer it does on the more of a chance that it might not work. We had one of those a couple of years ago...very sad.
