LP - Is it Heriditary? Hi, I need to know if you think I should contact my breeder. Rambo fractured his leg when he flew off my knee while we were at obedience class. It was touch and go whether they were going to do surgery on it but with a splint it seemed to heal it but he's still supposed to be "taking it easy" which is next to impossible with an almost 9 month old puppy. To date, I've spent $1300 just on vet visits (x-rays & splint changes) and now surgery has been ruled out for the fracture but being told he's got LP in both back legs but the one on the fractured leg will need surgery becausethe knee is sloping too much and they want to do when he's fully grown. The other leg would be done only if it was needed down the road. My personal vet told me his knees are bad probably from breeding and quite possible when he fell with his knee not being 100% good it could have caused the fracture. Should I mention something to the breeder. I'm not trying to get any money out of her but if this is hereditary I think she should know. Sorry for being so long winded. Thanks. |
Yes, it is most likely hereditary. I would notify the breeder. I know other Yorkie parents crate their injured patients to keep them restricted so they can heal. Good luck! |
Yes, Rambo was crated for 6 weeks after the splint was off and it's just been the past couple of weeks that he's been able to "live a little". |
LP can be hereditary or caused by injury. And, of cause, injury can make an existing mild problem, much worse. Did your vet check your puppy at when you first got him? I remember ZoE's vet specifically checking all of her joints for movement at her very first exam, and then did the same at her exam before her spay at 6 months. I'd let the breeder know Rambo's condition and discuss it with her. ZoE's breeder would definately want to know if she developed any issues. Infact, she called me just before ZoE turned one year old to see how she was doing and to make sure all was well and there were no problems with her. Sorry to hear Rambo's had a rough time lately. Hope he's healing well and if able to get outside and enjoy the summer! |
Medial LP in the toy breeds is hereditary. Your breeder should be notified but don't be surprised if she blames you, most like to blame the victim.. On another note, your dog should be assessed for the LP and the fracture by a board certified veterinary surgical specialist. Sometimes splinting these fractures is detrimental to the dog. In addition, I'd never in a million years let a general vet do an LP surgery on my dog or even advise me about it. |
Oh no no, it's not the vet doing the surgery. We just took Rambo to our vet after the fall not knowing if the leg was broken or just sprained. She took X-rays and when she saw the fracture and the damage to the knee we were sent to a surgeon at our University of Saskatchewan Western College of Veterinary Medicine. It was the surgeon there that put the splints on, took the X-rays, and said the surgery on the knee would need to be done and she would be the one doing it. They are loving and caring people there. It was my vet who mentioned to me about both knees having the LP because the surgeon sends her the discharge notes each time I take Rambo in. I have written to the breeder and yes I do expect to be blamed. |
