need advice for skin issues, bald spots

Hi everyone, I just got a sick puppy from a puppy mill. Noticed a few days later she had some bald spots with scaley skin. Took her to the vet, they put the light on her, nothing glowed. So she said buy some lamisal and apply for the next two weeks, gave her antibiotics. Well, were on our third week, some hair growing back, but still a little scaley. Puppy is now going on 14 weeks , and maybe 2 and 1/2 lbs. Vet said probably a fungus skin issue. Has anyone ever been through this before? Its not mange, or ringworm either. Don't think its food allergies. Breeder was giving her royal canine, I give her blue buffalo. Hmm, what could be wrong?::2omg:

Hello Chinalee, I'm sorry that your puppy is continuing to have this problem. I strongly suggest that you get ahold of a derm vet A.S.A.P. This pup needs to have a specialist examine her and get to the bottom of this. I'm so sorry your going through this but you must stay on course and do everything you need to for this pup.

As someone who has been in your shoes I strongly suggest that you have a full body scan/xray and blood tests on this pup as well.

Good Luck

Thank you lynzy, her next appointment is in one week. I'll talk to vet about it. I wonder why they never suggested blood work and X-ray tests before? I guess I'll find out. Other then her skin, she's great. Eats, pees, poops all good. She's very active, and likes to jump???? I know they shouldn't do that, but I can't stop her. She even climbed out of her playpen last night when we were out! Omg, she's a handful, but loving it!

I don't know if they do this routinely but I do:D My Miss Mini was a PuppyMill dog and as soon as I got her to a Vet and they saw that she had so many issues they did this....it can't hurt to have a baseline...unfortunately we found that she had many other issues because of it but hey...atleast we knew what we were dealing with....so we remortgaged the house! jk!!

Hahaha, hope that my puppy doesn't have a lot of issues. I know I'll have to sell something to get her better! Lol. There's a group of vets that work together at the same place. I don't know why they didn't give me my usual vet, cuz he runs the place and is very good about checking everything. Would it be offensive if I ask to have him for zooey? He is my other yorkies vet. It would be nice to all have the same doc. You think?

I agree with lynzy420 about taking your pup to a Vet Dermatologist. Best move I ever made for Piccolo when she had issues. The first visit was expensive, but in the long run it saved many trips to her regular vet.

I was curious why the food change from RC at such an early age? Seems to me to be alot of change/stress for such a young baby to go through....

YES..see the Dr. your most comfortable with. Sometimes with a large practice they try to spread the work around. You NEED to do what is best for you AND your pup. Don't worry about hurting feelings, this is not the time for that. Once you start standing up being heard, as you should be...it will become second nature! Always be respectful but firm. If this was your human child you would do it...the difference here is that these pups are dependent on you for a lifetime, they will never be able to tell you what is going on with them, you need to view as such and take action, always.

Also, a vet derm right now would be optimal and in the best interest of your pup. Conditions such as what she has are NOT normal and the root of the PROBLEM needs to be found, asap. In the long run, you will save money and your pup will be much happier and healthier!

Please keep us posted!

Did they do skin scrapings and look under the microscope? If they "put a light on her and nothing glowed", I am thinking they were looking for ring worm, or fungal infections with the light....so I am not clear why the pup is on an anti fungal if "nothing glowed". I have not had my first cup of coffee, so I may not be thinking clearly at all.....if they did not do skin scraping and look specifically for mites, this baby could very well have red mange...especially at this early age.....let me go get some coffee.....too early!

chinalee61 06-18-2012 08:15 AM

Is coffee good? Having mine too. Well I changed vets to my regular vet in the practice, we'll see what he says about zooey. He's much more informative and knowlagable then the other vet she was seeing. So that makes me feel good. As far as her food, I didn't want to trust that broker for anything she said, so I changed her food because my other yorkie seems to like it a lot. Zooey likes it as well. The broker gave me some zip lock food, so I don't know what it was really. I thought she said rc. Is blue buffalo not good?

I switched docs. Going next Monday!

My little one started getting hair loss at about 2 and is totally hairless except around his head which is thin. He is very healthy otherwise and his two sisters, Mom and Dad have beautiful hair. Had a lot of test and blood work done by two different Vets and along with the top College of Vet Medicine in the state. It is an allergy usually yorkies don't get it though it is more common in bulldogs and several others. I am sorry but I can't remember the name of it since it has been several years ago and is a long strange name. His skin feels like leather and is constanly shedding like when we sunburn and peel. Doesn't bother him and he is so little and cute anyways.
