| Kidney Stones :( Help please Hello, It has been a long time since Ive posted, so Im sorry for that but I am in need of advice. Charlie had to have surgery today to remove stones from his bladder. He woke up yesterday appearing to urinate several times everytime he went out this was not usual for him. after watching him a couple times I had him go out on the driveway so I could monitor better and he was not having any output other than a couple dribbles. He didnt appear to be in pain so i planned to take him to his vet this morning as the evening went on it seemed to be worse in that he was straining to try and urinate and was visibly in pain at 230 am I took him to the ER vet where he was xrayed and found to show 2 stones in his bladder. They gave him a cath and pain med and kept him over night and I transferred him to his vet this morning where he had surgery to remove the stones, they found a 3rd stone during surgery. the stone have been sent off to be evaluated as to what kind. I am told he will have stitches for a couple weeks but I am wondering what will I need to do special for him here at home. will he not be able to jump up on the furniture do I need to make special accommodations for him? Any help is appreciated

| I hope Charlie has a speedy recovery. Give him lots of get well hugs. When he comes home I would block off anywhere that he might want to jump on, like couches, chairs etc. If there is a room, maybe the kitchen, can you keep him there with his comfy bed and water etc. That way he can have everything he needs without the temptation of something to jump on. I hope he is feeling better soon!! |

| Concerns brought Charlie home today only to have to rush him back. was home about an hour when I went to let him out he lost control of his legs and started gasping for air and drooling rushed immediately back to vets he was fine when I got there but it scared me to death. they said it was most likely a spasm in the abd from surgery they gave him a cortizone shot to aid with that. the gasping they said was anxiety. The did a full body xray to rule out any issues with heat and lungs there was a small pocket in the left lung that they noticed but were not over concerened they gave him a small injection of lasix for preventative measure. so there would be no pneumonia I notice that after he tries to have a bowel movement he kind of drags his back leg, I dont know if this is from weakness (you know how they stand while they poo) or an anesthesia issue but I am calling tomorrow and informing the vet of my findings. I am having allot of "accidents" and not sure how to control it. I was going to put a diaper on him but am afraid that it will rub where the stiches are. They said this would last a week or so I have to work tomorrow but am off the rest of the week. I guess I will just block off an area and come home at lunch to check on him. He is so pitiful I feel so bad for him. He just looks at me like "mommy Im sorry I peed on the floor" just breaks my heart. I just filled a bucket with spick n span water and mop when needed. Hes resting noe I gave him a tramdol for pain so maybe he will rest through the night. If anyone has been through this I would sure appreciate any help.

| Poor Charlie. Do hope he is doing better tomorrow. I hope they gave you pain meds for him. I would definitely keep him in a small area while you are not home. I would not put a belly band or diaper on him because of the incision. It should not be covered. Does he have an E collar to prevent him from licking it? I have never had any issues after bladder stone surgery...have had two pups that had it, and they recovered quickly. Wish the same for Charlie.

| Doing Better Well this is day 4 after surgery and we are on the mend Our pee no longer is a puddle of blood, we are not peeing in the home anymore and no more incidents of seizure like occurences. I did ask the vet that did the surgery about that and she agreed with the other vet that it was a muscle spasm/pain from after surgery. I also asked about the dragging of the leg after trying to have a BM and she said that when he was trying to have a bm he was using ALL muscles to do so and the ones that had been cut for surgery are included, the straining was causing pain and it was simply a compensation for the pain, it has not happened since and she assured me that he had no nerve damage as she had gone over all of his xrays and tests again for me. Charlie is eating well and of course living like a king I am sleeping on the couch since he always sleeps with me and the bed is off limits (it sits to high) he isnt supposed to jump as high as our bed sits, so its the couch for mamma for at least 2 weeks when the stitches come out. I called the vet this morning and we can stop taking the Tramadol (pain med) today sand see how it goes, if he seems uncomfortable or restless then he has to start again still taking antibiotic and Prednisone. but all is looking good. I want to thank those who is posting to my issue it really means allot

Zachary's Mom Donating Member | I am so glad he is doing better. I have had kidney stones myself several times and have had a cathater till it all heals but the poor animals don't have that option. Boy, these little love bugs can scare 20 years off your growth can't they. It is so very frightening for us because we love them so much and they are so helpless. Vets really need to tell you what MAY happen after a surgery. Too many I think assume you already know something or many probably just don't bother. My vet has been practicing since 1969 and knowing that makes me very comfortable. I figure he has seen most everything. Will keep you both in my prayers, Louise |
