I'm sooo glad Bella is doing better....its scary when they are sick and we dont know whats wrong. Sorry I have to hijack this thread for a second...can someone explain to me what Liver Shunt is? In plain english....I've read up on it and I still dont understand what it is. |
I am very happy to read the good news. Yay Bella! Best wishes. |

As simple as I can make it: a liver shunt is when the artery that takes the blood through the liver to the heart somehow reroutes around the liver & allows the unpurified blood to go directly to the heart. |

I saw this thread meant to click on it & then it was gone. Somehow missed it since & it is this long now! What a relief to hear her labs fine! How is she doing? Has her vomiting and diarrhea stopped? What was their final diagnosis - a bug? |
What wonderful news about Bella. I pray she continues to improve and does not vomit any more. What a relief for you! |

There are so many terrible types of problems which are very similar to LS too. |

Honestly there's no one thing that I've been told it was for sure. I'm hoping whatever it was is gone forever. I think I've contributed to it & feel awful over it. She's been getting waaay more food than she should've (my fault for eyeballing it) plus she's a gobbler. I now measure both dogs portions & split her daily allotment into 3 meals instead of 2. I also ordered one of those metal discs to put in her bowl. I found a pretty cute slow feed bowl locally & it's slowed her down tremendously. Today was her first day off the anti vomit med & so far, so good. |

We're backtracking a bit now. I'd hoped to have Bella's dental done & asked the new vet to add in a bile acid test considering her history. We got the results & it's still pretty elevated; they said normal is 14.9 average & hers was 26.9. We're going back to gainesville monday to have an ultrasound done. The crazy thing is, one of the things UF had me change is the amount of food she gets ( I measure 1/8 cup) because they said her ideal weight is 9.5. Well, she was 12 pounds back in June...she's now over 13. When I think of a LS dog, I envision a puney pup that doesn't gain weight. Bella is FAR from puney! I just want her well... |
I hope everything goes well in Gainesville. I'll be thinking of you both . |
Sending prayers and welll wishes for sweet Bella. You are both in my thoughts. |
Sending lots of prayers for Bella. *Hugs* This too shall pass. |
Sending prayers for Bella. Let us know how the trip to Gainesville goes. |
I was looking for an update, and remembered - duh, not till Monday! So, now I'll just drop off an extra helping of good wishes, love, and hugs . |

Good luck on Monday with Bella!! Hopefully you will get the answers that you need to rest peacefully  |
I just came across this thread while researching Blue Buffalo. So sorry your pup's having problems. Best of luck Monday to you and Bella. I hope it falls within that "98% of what we worry about never happens." It's so hard when they're sick and you don't know what's wrong or what to do for them. |
Bella doesn't have a liver shunt; I can't tell you how relieved I am. Dr Perez thinks she initially had a bug of some sort that caused her to vomit the bile. She explained to me when the blood is drawn, if it's not done just right the billirubin bursts & causes the numbers to be wrong. That's why she wanted us to redo the predental bloodwork & it came out normal both fasting & after she ate. She said this happens a lot so when she sees a patient with a high bile acid test result she asks the owners to take it over if as in Bella's case there's no other symtoms of ls. |
