| Knee issues howdy everyone i need some help / advice yesterday my 9 yr old yorkie was jumping off the couch. just like he has several times. i have steps for the couch and bed that he uses, but if he gets excited sometimes, from the couch he will just jump off. all i heard was a scream and I came to him and he was holding his back leg up. I took him to the emergency vet and he has dislocated his knee, tore ligaments, pulled tissue at the hip. he is going to see a specialists / vet that can do surgery on his leg. if he doesnt have the surgery, he will be putting so much pressure on his other leg, that in a short time that leg will get so much arthritis that it wont be able to handle the pressure of supporting him and then both legs will require surgery. of course, if this surgery he needs for the one that is hurt now, if it requires a lot of money....there wont be another option. has anyone else been through this recently? if so, how much did it costs? my dog , his name is Harley, has never had anything like this happen to him before and I am really scared / nervous. he has pain medicine to last him until he sees the vet on tuesday. |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Welcome to YT; I'm so sorry it was under such awful circumstances. WE have a member her called LadyJane, I will pm her to come to this thread, as she does rescue work and lives in Texas, and for sure will be able to give you recommendations on what hospital/surgeon etc. I think if I'm not mistaken Texas A&M is one name that I recall. Also you will need to keep him crated or at the most in an expen. You don't want him to use the leg. Did they splint it? You can safely use cold packs on the knee - 5minutes on five minutes off(or until skin temp returns to normal). Cost is going to be pretty variable depending upon how difficult the surgery is, and the nature and types of repairs needed. But you do want an experienced surgeon with knee surgery on small dogs. Luxating patella surgery can go anywhere from $2K to 3.5K Did he also avulse the ACL? Anterior Cruciate Ligament/Cranial Cruciate Ligament? You could look up on the net these types of surgeries to get some idea of cost. It is a scarey business surgery, but that is why you find the best specialist you can; it is how we can apply our worry practically. Keep posting here, sometimes it takes a bit of time to round up the troops, who may have some direct knowledge. But know we are here for your support.

| My Azrael just had knee surgery for a torn ligament May 8th 12. Dr. Bruecker is a fantastic orthopedic surgeon. Doctors | Veterinary Medical And Surgical Group (VMSG) Since her leg was a bit bowed, he took out a tiny piece of bone above the knee to help align the leg better then re-connect the ligament. From start to finish the surgery and tests came to $4,600.00. They have to be confined for three months, but can be taken out in the grass, with a sling or harness & leash, for about a minute several times a day for the first month, then for a bit longer times the second month and longer time out the third month. She goes back Wednesday for a follow up.

| Harley Update here is what Harley's vet said today. The reason why the emergency vet said his knee is dislocated it's because it isnt but it is the typical issue small dogs have with their knees. It moves around, ( and most dogs it wont swivel like his does ) and that is why the EV said that. his hip, yeah, its gonna be sore, but he pulled a muscle. his ligament in his knee...yes, that is torn. and for right now ( it's almost as what i would call a sprain ) let's see if it heals on its own. he will develop arthritis, but he would of anyway with his age, but now more now since he has this injury. after 2 weeks, if he isnt doing / healing like the vet would like to see, then yes, surgery then. the vet has concerns about putting Harley under for surgery, due to his age. i then asked the vet , how much would that surgery cost. the vet said around 1,000. but that's ok, at least it wont cost 3000 like the emergency vet said or 5,000 like ppl on yorkie forum had told me. so, it's all good. i just got to make sure he takes it easy while it heals. thank you all for your support. really meant a lot to me. |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | A wait and see approach might be okay for now. How-ever did your vet prescribe any anti inflammatories for him? I offer this information/opinion for your consideration. Knee surgery can be trickey, and not many general vets and especially with small breed dogs really have the skill and experience to do a really good surgical repair. Truly I believe a board certified surgeon fully versed in the many different surgical repair/replace techniques would be best. Personally I'd only want that surgery done once the right way!. Also until the joint is opened up, it is truly then the surgeon gets a full view of what is going on, and the best way to repair the joint. You may pay more but I rather do that then deal with a subpar surgical repair. Their skill also means that they can get in and out with the least amount of time; and usually have a surgical team to assist and monitor the dog while under anesthesia. That is very important with a senior dog. And the only post I saw was one at $4600 which included some additional techniques and also included all the testing and pre post op care, including bloodwork. And as a final note if your vet is concerned about putting him under for surgery, I certainly would be, and would want the best and most experienced team to work on my dog. I hope your dog heals well, Best of Luck

| All I can do is advise you, but I would never let a general vet do this surgery. I would only go to a board certified orthopedist.
