Cry ***Tibbe Hurt Been To ER Vet Twice - I'm So Scared***

Last night I fell asleep on the couch, got up at 1:30 a.m. to go to bathroom & saw Tibbe followed me though he just stopped in the doorway to the bath with his head turned to the right side, then just dropped down & lay there. He was wobbly when he got up to follow me into bedroom & limping on his left front leg. I lifted him & tried to examine him & he cried out so off we went to the E. R. Vet. They examined, x-rayed after a pain
injection and could see nothing fractured/dislocated nor palpate anything tender(he's so stoic), so put him on Prednisolone .4 ml. & Tramadol p.o. at home. He's been extremely lethargic all day though arousable so tonight I took him back in for another check. He was very animated at the E. R. clinic & was re-examined, blood drawn & his Lipase is high though no other enzymes are & the rest of the test WNL. He's not vomiting,
having diarrhea, is eating, drinking, peeing/pooping normally so the vet said we will just keep him on his regular diet for now & watch him for a while & do another blood test in a while.

We can only imagine that in trying to follow me from the couch to the bathroom last night, he either jumped off the couch without using his doggie stairs, missed one or more of the stairs & hit the floor hard & hit his chin or head or fell awkwardly & he's sore or injured. His neuro x2 now is completely normal but at home, he just stands in the middle of the floor until I tell him to "go to bed" or "come to Mommie" or "eat your dinner"
or something. He is not playing & just wants to sleep. The vet says it's probably the combination of the two medications making him lethargic. Do you think that is probably it? I'm so scared but trying to tell myself he is going to be okay & it is just the medication. I hope & pray he has a better day tomorrow. He's just got to be okay - I can't imagine this life without my boy.

Poor Tibbe

I know when Sugar got injured at New Year's she never presented to the vet with any pain at all. Dr. said this is very common as adrenaline gets pumping when taken out of their home, into the car, into the vet's office and into the exam room.

that Tibbe just has a sprain or pulled muscle....at least the vet saw nothing abnormal thus far.

OMGosh! I'm so sorry for poor Tibbe!

My Tink is a hyper monster but when she was on tramadol after her surgery she was extremely calm and lethargic.

I hope he's feeling better soon.... I'll keep him in my prayers....

His symptoms sound like his neck is out & that will not show on x-ray. My Aunt has a Pom that this happened to about 6 mo ago & the Chiropractor fixed in seconds with the Activator. Poor Cody would not even walk, he just sat in the floor with his little head cocked to one side & would just fall over to lay down.

OOHHHHHH NOT LITTLE TIBBE!! I am thinking he jumped down off the couch and landed wrong...has a sprain or pull or something like that....maybe in his neck like lillymae suggested. That Tramadol will make him lethargic....hoping he will be so much better tomorrow...if he doesnt "work it out", maybe a visit to the chiropractor with an Activator would be the magic bullet! Keeping Tibbe in my prayers...please keep us updated...

I hope Tibbe is ok. You could be right in that it was a slight injury because he was racing off to follow you. In my experience, Tramadol knocked my dogs out. Just keep a close eye on him, which I'm certain you are already doing.

I am so sorry to hear about Tibbe... I don't have the experience to comment on what might be going on. I can only say that Tibbe is in my thoughts and prayers and I am praying that he is ok. His picture (avatar) never fails to make me smile... He seems bursting with joy. I hope it's just a sprain... As my boys mature and take on a little weight, I am concerned about their knees. They are so adept at begging... Please keep us posted on how he is doing.

He's no longer limping or keeping his head turned to the right like he did at first last night but he was unsteady on his feet today & then when I was rubbing his back, I could feel this hardness across his shoulders at about the withers that was bunched up feeling - to me. That is when I administered his first Tramadol, since I'd waited to give it after giving the Prednisolone because he was asleep & hated to double-dose him, he was so groggy. Not too long after that, the shoulder area felt soft again. The vet did say it could be neck - or anything - he just could not get him to react to any maneuvers or palpations. So, all we can do is just restrict his activity, no jumping, etc., & keep him quiet & on his meds. It is so strange to see my little perpetual motion machine who "talks" to me often during the day as you see him in the avatar, totally quiet, asleep most of the time & standing around almost like in a trance when he is awake. I sure hope we can figure out what is wrong so we can treat it if anything else should be done for for now, there's nothing more to do. He's seen two different vets so at least I have the benefit of two different assessments to go on. I'm wondering if he didn't fall & hit his head & he's got a low-grade concussion with a headache & possibly a neck strain but if he's concussed, he's got none of the neurological signs they look for yet & it will be 24 hours since whatever happened in about 2 1/2 hours. I have been singing the "Jesus Loves Me.....This I Know" tune to him, changing the lyrics to "....Loves You..." & he seems to love that. He just closes his little eyes & sighs. He loves to be cuddled & sung to, even when he's feeling so bad. Your prayers will surely be appreciated.

The pred will reduce any swelling in his head from the injury in the fall. If he hit his shoulders he could have swelling there too. That may feel strange to him...similar to someone holding him down, maybe causing him to be uncomfortable, not pain but pressure.

Like when you sprain a wrist and you have trouble moving your hand. It may just be freaking him out a bit. Or when they give a dog SubQ fluids at the vets, some dogs tolerate it well, I've seen others try to run from the strange lump on their backs, or they shake alot trying to get rid of it.

I don't know what the Activator is & I'm kind of scared of chiro's - what if it should be a cervical disc - are they safe? I will have to check that out though if it really starts to look cervical!

It is good to hear that the Tramadol can sedate a dog because he is like a little stuffed dog. Just stands or sits in place until I tell him twice what to do. Poor little guy - he must be really drugged out on that stuff but thank God it is helping him. He's not whining or shaking or panting.

The rest of you who offered thoughts & prayers - oh, they are sooooooooo much appreciated. Just knowing you all are hoping & praying helps so very much. I don't feel so alone sitting here thinking - and trying not to. Probably too tired. I've had about 1 1/2 hours sleep in the last 23 hours as today I just couldn't sleep as I was watching Tibbe like a hawk. I think I creeped him out a big - every time he woke up or looked at me I was looking at him. Finally, he turned his back on me before going back to sleep as he knows it's not normal for me to always be watching him. But he has enjoyed the babying & singing, I think. Bless his little heart. He's asleep now so I am going to try to bunk down here on the couch in the den as he's in his little carrier on his furry blankie & I don't want to move or disturb him going to bed. We'll just have a sleepover in the den. I hope he has a restful night. I hope he's not hurting.

It could be so many things. Ellie does have a diagnosed cervical disc problem..along with the rest of her spine being a mess. I will list her symptoms and you can see if anything sounds familar. When the neck went out it started with her just being out of it. She didn't really want to move. Pain when palpating her right front leg. The only pain the vet got was turning head to right. She was fairly alert at vet office but still very slow. Came home with inj of bupranex which totally knocked her out. When any part of her spine flares she sometimes like to lay on her side like a board. She does a lot of playbow stretching. Her ears and tongue get very hot. And when she is laying down..while she is responsive..she looks totally out of it at times. Lts of staring or the like.

Even if it did turn out o be his neck, it is not necessarily serious...although though of course it should be treated as it is.

Guessing your regular vet got copies of xrays and such and is talking to you about how long to wait before the next step?

Tramadol can make some dogs act very odd. It sounds like the wobblies and falling over happend before medicating though. Sleep is good.
