switched food too quick continued Hi everyone. I tried to switch Khloe from the purina pro plan the breeder had her on to innova puppy food. She experienced soft stools and mucous covered stool. I took her to the vet and he said I switched too fast. He gave me hill science diet i/d to settle stomach. Khloe's stomach stoped griping and stools got a little firmer. As soon as I started her back on innova this morning stools are soft again. Do you think its the quick switch or the food itself?I hate to switch her again but I can't keep her something that makes her sick even if she likes innova. My bichon eats the adult small bites without any stomach issues but I realize they are different pups |
I was always told you should slowly switch food. Gradually mixing in the new and reducing the old. Do this for at least 2 weeks but the longer the better. You might research adding canned pure pumpkin (libby's) not the pie filling and how much to add. Not sure for a yorkie size. I was told to give a little in my german shepherds foods when switching. But be careful with the amounts because different amounts will make it go either way too firm or too soft . I'm sure others here will be more knowledgeable about the yorkie size. :) |
Thanks. right now I am thinking about keeping her on that hills id/ crap from the vet and mixing in the food I am trying to switch her to. I don't think I need to go back to the breeder's brand since I stopped with that over a week ago.:( She goes to the vet tomorrow and I will ask his opinion. |
If the Hills ID food is keeping her from the stomach upset - I'd probably just stay with that until you can talk to the vet. Even though you may not like it (and it's probably not a permanent food anyway) - it seems best for her right now. If your vet is in agreement - then you can sloowly transition her over - by mixing just a small amount of the new food into her current food. I do this for a week - then gradually add a little more of the new food ~ a few days or week at a time. Sounds like the Innova might not be the food for her though. |

I agree. Taycie has such a sensitive tummy. Before she was on the diet she is on now I went through food, after food trying to find something she could tolerate. I would also have to transition her over soooooo slow. Sometimes I would do it up to two weeks. I would usually start out mixing in a tsp and work up slowly decreasing the old food. But, even if I did it super slow it didn't always work out. I would also talk to your vet and see what he thinks. |
