Stressed, not sure how to make her better Today was her first vomit in two months. She's on cisapride to prevent vomiting and she vomited anyways. She's still regurgitating and swallowing it before it comes out except today I found a vomit stain on her pillow. I took her to families house and she ran around and did her usual investigating. Since we live across the street from family at dinner time we took her home so she didn't accidentally get food from the young children there. Then when we came home she would barely walk to us. Tail between the legs kinda hunched up as she walked and shaking. Once she laid down she stopped shaking but I keep hearing her make a swallowing noise. Doesn't seem to be limping but when she sits she sometimes is holding her paw up. She seemed very uncomfortable but now is sleeping in her normal position. They know she has a stomach mobility disorder but don't know why. She's had bloody stools, vomiting once a day until we started cisapride. She's loosing her whiskers too which I think is weird. And I keep seein a lot of her hair on her pillow. She itches a lot and I've seen her scoot her butt on the rub maybe twice in the last couple months. She is becoming less and less playful but she is also almost two now so it could be because she's getting older?? Stools have been normal since I started natural balance grain free and probiotics and plant enzymes. I think I may see small string like things in her stool but can't tell if it's from her puppy pad or not. She's her poop every time she gets a chance. She's been tested for worms came back negative. And a million other tests all negative. Even surgery to see if there's a blockage. I feel like something's really wrong since she's not her normal self. Could worms cause this or is inflammatory bowel disease like the vet thinks. I'm so stressed at this point. I feel like I call the vet every day. Has anyone else experienced this? |
I believe I would get a second opinion from another vet clinic and take that stool for examination. |
I've had three different vets look at her so far. In my post I meant eating her stools. I couldn't go back and change it. No one can tell me what's wrong. My neighbor has Yorkies and she said her yorkie died from what I'm discribing and they never figured out why. I'm just so sad I hate knowing somethings wrong and I don't know how to fix it. I've spent thousand of dollars on her in the last four months. |
Would you ask the vet for a dewormer if you were me? They took her off heartgard because of the possible food allergy. I've heard so many horrible stories about topical dewormers I'm scared it will hurt her. She was 3.7 pounds before this started she's not at 3 pounds. |
You need to take the stool in that/when you see the white stringy stuff in it as it could be tape worm & tape worm will Only show in a stool sample when they are shedding off so a dog could actually be full of tape worm & it may not show in a stool sample. How old is your baby & what other if any symptoms has she had ? |
Were all vets at the same clinic or did you go to another clinic? Sometimes a different clinic will provide a whole new approach and have better diagnostic tools. If you've done that, I believe I would get her looked at by my state vet school and where she can be fully evaluated. It sounds like her quality of life is pretty low right now and as you know better than most, she needs to get a diagnosis and/or treatment that will give this poor baby some real relief. |
Two different vets. There's a vca vet I've looked into taking her to. Not sure if they are good or not. Her symptoms in the last four months include two cases of extremely bad hge. Which is all blood coming out in her stool, regurgitating food usually once a day and a while after she has eaten. They did a baruim X-ray which showed the baruim takin longer then usual to move out of the stomach which then they thought blockage so she had exploratory surgery and found nothing. Did see her intestines were inflamed but not bad. Tested for liver shunt, Addison's, giardia, pancreatitis and a million other things. Haven't sent the bioposy out yet because we've already spent so much but that would rule out ibd. Shes not as playful any more but getting older and has been through a lot. Ear infection with yeast and bacteria. I have seen blood in her stool twice in the last three weeks. Has a lot of regurgitating burps. She's on cisapride Pepcid and enzymes and probiotics. Her stomach used to gurgle a lot but not any more. She had her first hge in feb 2011 |
Did the do an EGD on her ? EGD = Scope |
Whiskers falling out and I've seen clumps of her but no bald spots. Eats her stool when I can't pick it up right away. So usually when she's home alone. Itches a lot. |
No vet let us choose between that and exploratory surgery but now I regret it. I wish we would have. |
I believe in a case like this I would want the vet school to assess her if your vets don't know what that is in her poop, for instance. She's probably going to need a team with a wide experience in exotic diagnostics & equipment that regular vets might not have. I sure hope you can get her in somewhere excellent so this little girl can get some relief from these awful symptoms. |
Thanks I hope so too. |

Also, if your baby has tape worm in her it could cause all of these symptoms depending on how long it's been there so deff take the stool sample in to your vet the next time you see the white stringy stuff in her stool. If she poo's at night you can put it in a ziplock bag in the fridge till you can take it to your vet the next day. I will be Praying you can find some answers sooner rather then later. |

Ohio State I thought had a state or the art vet school. I know you have spent a lot of money so far, but it is past time a team of "experts" look at her. Please keep us updated |
I just made an appointment with vet number four. Hopefully this one can give me answers. Ive been taking her to the number one ranked vet in cincinnati for the last two years. I researched this morning and found a vca hospital that has a vet that specializes in digestive issues in small breeds. they said she also has a dog that has had digestive issues the last 6 years. the best part is the first visit is free! the soonest i can get her in is saturday so now i just have to wait. Daisy had one kinda normal but a little loose stool this morning. Shes still making the swallowing noise and seems uncomfortable. She has slept all morning. I have to work tuesday through friday this week. its only four hours a day so im hoping she will be ok while im away. |
I was reading panacur c works pretty well for dogs with worms and giardia. I just read that giardia can be hard to detect. I know shes been tested for this, but didnt realize that it doesnt always show up on the tests. Does anyone know if it is safe to give panacur to a dog that may have food allergies or intolerencs? I also have contacted her vet and they are going to get a approval to release her records to me. Im going to have them email them to me so that I can have a copy as well as a copy for the specialist. Two of the vets she has seen work at her vets office but both used to have small practices on their own and have now joined this office which has three locations in cincinnati. The other vet she saw was an emergency hospital which they treated her the first night she had a bad episode of hge. |

did anyone check her for megaesophogus? The regurgitation could be that. Doesn't sound like her only problem, but worth ruling out. Good luck, and keep us posted! |
I'm going to ask that when I take her. Cisapride is supposed to help with mega esophagus. Does anyone know if you would they have been able to determine if she has this when she had exploratory surgery on her stomach area. Also could they have seen worms during the surgery. I know they didn't open anything up once they were inside her. |

I live about 3 hours from OSU vet school....I can't tell you how much they helped me years ago with my first Yorkie!!! He was critically ill and I had been advised to euthanize him by my local vet. I couldn't accept that and went to OSU. There he was seen by no less than 4 vets and many vet students. He had the entire array of diagnostic studies and was sent home on the medication that I knew he needed. (I am a RN). Not only did I get all that, they became his primary caregivers when I had to take him to my local vet, they were always consulted at OSU in regards to medication dosages and treatments. He lived well for 2 more years. I didn't pay anymore there than I had paid here at our vet office and emergency vet office. I hope you find the answers you need. I have been loving, raising and rescueing Yorkies for nearly 30 years and I understand completely the lengths that one will go for their fur baby!!! |
Thank you so much for that advice. I think if the vca hospital doesn't work out that will be my next step. I've been trying to come up with ways to slow her down when eating. I've been putting a cup in the middle of her food. Sounds weird but I've been picking her up when shes done eating and trying to hold her straight up and down for 15 minutes then patting her back to burp her. I heard it might help with dogs with mega esophagus. Figure it doesn't hurt trying it. |
I just read this post. My baby has this problem off and on also..........although, so far she has never acted lethargic. She has had blood work done but never had an x-ray. I know she doesn't chew like she should and always thought that was her biggest problem. If I am giving her one of her treats, I hold onto it while she is pulling at it so that she HAS to chew, but obviously there is no way to do that when she is eating her kibble or when I am at work during the day. I even thought about putting her kibble in a coffee grinder to make it even smaller. When I give her meat I make sure a mash it up pretty good. I'm thinking I should ask the vet to do an x-ray to see if I am dealing with a case of Mega Esophagus. Has your baby done this all of her life? |
I will be praying that all goes well and your baby feels better soon. |
She's had three cases of hge since she was seven months old she is now a year and nine months. Regurgitating started when she was a year and five months. Still does it but swallows it before it comes out of her mouth. Has your vet said what they think is wrong? |

I put Daisy on grain free food which I think has helped a lot. I can tell shes regurgitating and swallowing it because i can hear a liquid come up then her lick it down before it comes out. She does burp a lot too but I can tell a difference between the two. Heres another question for everyone. I may have just figured out Daisys problem. She just went to the bathroom and of course ate half of it but the half she didnt eat I picked up with some toilet paper and saw tiny string like things in her poop and they were def moving. They are super tiny I had to look close but they looked like a couple cm's long and as thin as a thread if not thinner. Are these def. worms?? Thank God she is going to the vet tomorrow. I saved the stool for them to look at. Another question she sleeps with me at night and gives me face kisses. If these are worms am I doomed to get them? |
