Cali is improving but only slightly. We have increased her Dilantin to twice a day and we're weaning her Valium. Her legs seem much looser although she isn't walking yet. Although with prayers, positive beliefs, and her Dilantin...I have hope that she will walk again. Maybe by Halloween! She is still happy and spunky as ever. Right now she is playing with Mia as if she hasn't a thing wrong with her. She truly is a blessing. :D

Cali is doing well. Still not walking but she's very mobile. Her legs are loose but still crossed. I'm still believing though.

How is Dessa? Is she still using the ramp?

I'm praying that Cali will walk again too!!! She is a strong lil' girl. You and your husband are amazing parents to Cali and Mia!!! Dessa loves the ramp!!! She loves sleeping on her pillow on the bed and with the ramp she can easily get up there and sleep in her favorite spot. I only wish we had gotten a ramp or stairs from the beginning when we got her. She has always been a jumper and the ramp eliminates 99% of it. As always we're keeping Cali and all of you in our thoughts and prayers!!!! xoxoxo

I'm new here but just wanted to say that this happened to my Zoe. I thought it was her spine but to our surprise it was her heart. She's been on heart meds for 2 years and never had another episode. I hope Cali will be able to walk soon. Sounds like she has great parents.

Cali is doing great! She has such a strong spirit. Her hind legs get relaxed by she can't use them..they are still crossed. We are thinking of taking another trip to MSU when I get a break (in December). In the meantime, we are weaning her Dilantin again b/c it hasn't done any good and her Valium continues to be weaned.

Thanks for the inquiry! I hardly come here unless I get an email saying there is a response in this thread. I've been so busy this semester. Cali is doing great. Her legs are the same and we are planning a trip back to MSU in December. I just want to make sure there isn't anything more we can do for her. I feel her joints are deforming as a result of her crossed leg and she basically hops on her knees (like a seal). She is getting Thyroid med once a day and we just reduced her vailum to once a day (and will stop it in about 3 weeks). She seems to be handling the weaning without any problems.

I hope all of your yorkie babies are doing well and living happy fulfilled lives. :D

Cali is doing great. She can't walk and both her hind legs are still folded in but she doesn't even know anything is wrong with her. We brought her to the orthopedic vet 2 weeks ago (when Mia had her surgery) and he said there is nothing that can be done for her and he doesn't see her ever walking normal again. But as long as she is mobile and happy, we are happy too! :D

Thanks Lynzy! Yes...both girls have really been spoiled since Mia had her surgery 2 weeks ago. They have been sleeping in mama's bed. However, last night they moved back to their room. Those girls do not want for anything... :D

Just checking in on Cali and Mia. I hope everyone is doing well!!! It's almost been a year since all this started for Dessa. Her's was caused by the vaccinations she got at the vet she had an allergic reaction. Her shots are due again at the beginning of March and we're so scared. We do know that we won't get more than one at a time this time. If you didn't know Dessa before you can't really tell that she sometimes has a limp. We were very lucky to get her to MSU when we did they were amazing!!!! Keeping your family, Cali and Mia in our prayers forever!!!

Have you talked to your vet about vaccinations? I do not know the history of your Dessa, but do know that it says on each vaccination to not give, if the dog is not healthy.

Please do not get me wrong, I am not against vaccines, but do have a pup that reacted and she cannot have another vaccine -it might kill her. My other pups have no problems, so they get their regularly scheduled vaccines. I guess what I am saying in a clumsy way is that each case needs to be discussed with a professional, when there has been a horrible reaction in the past. Hope that makes sense.

Hi, just read your post about your Dessa - if your dog had a terrible reaction than she should not get that shot again. My Enzo got a Lyme disease vaccine shot and that evening couldn't walk. My vet at the time told us that next year we shouldn't give two shots in one day. I left that Vet a year and a half later when Enzo started having seizures and went holistic and never turned back. I had two Vets tell me it was malpractice to give Enzo that Lyme shot again when he had such a bad reaction. Enzo hasn't had any shots in four years - I got titre tests for him and he is fully protected still - after four years !!! I feel so strongly about the dangers of unnecessary vaccines - if you titre test Dessa when she is due, it may cost more than the shot but will save you significantly if she has another reaction or develops future problems. It took me over three years and thousands of dollars later to cure Enzo' s seizures.

Also, I feel so strongly about seeking out a holistic vet to treat your dog - the care compared to conventional vets is unmatched - they are interested in the whole health of the dog and will help keep your dog healthy for its whole lifetime. Good Luck!

Thanks for the responses on Dessa and her vaccinations. When my daughter talked to the vet last month he didn't seem to think the vaccinations had anything to do with Dessa's illness when we were told by MSU that it was indeed the vaccinations, we decided to not vaccinate her this year. We are looking into another option in the Tuscallosa or nearby area, but so far we haven't found anything. If anyone has any ideas please private message me.

On another note . . . How is Cali doing? I hope everything is doing well with her. Please let me know when you get a chance. Still keeping her in my prayers!!!!

Hi Nani! Cali is doing great...hobbling around still but she hasn't let the loss of her back legs slow her down any. She just had a birthday on Monday and turned 8 years old. I need to post a pic of her in her stroller looking out the window, she is so cute. How is Dessa? BTW...my vet doesn't vaccinate Cali or Mia any longer unless they have low immunity. We do titers (which can be expensive) but allow us to determine if a vaccination is needed. I'm not sure about the rabies vaccine...that's the one Cali had just before this incident so I'm not planning to give my dogs that one again.

That's when Dessa started was after the rabies and the other shots. I will have to look into the titers. If it was up to me Dessa would not get any vaccinations. It was pitiful watching her last year. She still favors that side at times. When we wash her feet after going outside she will kinda pull away like it hurts her. The ramp we bought her to get on the couch and bed have been a real blessing too. I would love to see pictures of Cali and Mia!!!

Yes, Cali is doing well...thanks for checking. She is such a happy lil camper. I'm in awe of her. Well, in awe of all animals that they accept what is dealt to them, even if it is crummy sometimes. She is just as fiesty as ever. We play with squirrels and fishies and I'll throw them far for Mia and just a few feet away for Cali. She loves it. She hops around like a seal yet is VERY fast. We haven't put her in a wheelchair b/c it just hasn't been necessary.

She seems happy! :D
