| Advice for giving liquid meds This morning I started Lexie on her meds for epilepsy. After a ton of thought and research we chose potassium bromide. Here is the issue- the princess HATES taking it via syringe. Yes- I can put it on her food but I am a nut about exact dosing and time and I would worry she would not get the full dose. ANY ANY hints for this?? This is a long term (forever) thing so the princess and I need to come up with a great solution.Thank you in advance for your help

| I would work with her to accept the syringe, especially because this is not a temporary med. Put her on top of a counter (if you can do this safely with her, have someone spot her if necessary), be happy and confident and establish keywords or phrases to go with the routine. If you are nervous or give off any negative vibes, she will mirror your feelings and get anxious. You can secure and steady her head/mouth with one hand under her jaw, holding her beard. That is what I did with Max when I had to give him eye drops. He got so good that I didn't even have to hold his head. Put the syringe deep enough into her mouth to administer all of the med. When you are finished praise her profusely and reward her with something she really likes, a treat or some play time.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I like Maximo's answer, but after giving our cat medication this way, I know it can be so difficult. You say you are afraid she wouldn't get the full amount if you put it on her food, how about giving her a little food with the medicine, and then when she finishes all of that, add more food? Also there are gel capsules you can fill up with medication and use a pill popper or put some tasty treat on top. I melt string cheese, it's low fat and you can form it around pill, and when it cools they can't lick it off. They usually swallow it whole. I hope the medication helps her.

| I agree with Maximo's tips; but if this method fails, I would ask the vet if tablets might be available in her dose. They are easier to conceal in food.

| Sammy took the same medication but it was in capsule form. I just used to put the capsule in his dog food at dinner time and he would eat it up. Whenever Sammy had to take any kind of liquid medicine I would measure it out and put it in the palm of my hand and he would lick it off my hand. Good Luck! |

| I slip Elvis his pills via hidden in a chunk of cheese-only way he doesn't spit it out, he swallows the cheese down whole pill snuggly smashed inside. I had to give liquid antibiotics before here's what I did as he is very resistant, a picky eater & too smart for his own good. I never gave full dosage in one shot btw it only got spit back at me-yes a Yorkie can spit like llama when they want to trust me. I opened mouth gently but it was forced. My fingers behind K-9s best place to grip. Talk gently & holding snout to sky released medicine to back of throat keep head to sky this forces swallowing. No it's not fun, not pretty & last resort. But it gets the job done. Thankfully for us it was only 10 days but by day 8 it was routine & more like okay mom let's get this over with for a treat.

I like the hand idea too. This doesn't help with liquid, but I found the perfect solution to make Max take his heartworm pill is to put it on the floor or next to a treat on a plate. He thinks he is finding a naughty treat and eats it right up. Silly boy.

| Honestly, I think it depends on the medicine. I have no experience with this liquid med...but I can tell you that liquid Tramdol is nasty. I could pour an entire bottle on my floor and not one of my pups would lick it up.

| Yep that is bad. Liquid Metronidazole is same way. It tastes horrible even if they do add a flavor to it. I have tasted it, Yucky.

| Oh YES, that is another one. Funny thing though is that Sammy will take it. He is very difficult to give pills to and he had diarrhea not long ago. I decided to try the liquid...he took it with no problem. He is the only pup I have ever seen do that...they normally spit it out. He is on liquid omeprazole and loves it..actually opens his mouth when he sees the syringe. Kind of cute.

| I bought Blue canned food (yuck!) tonight and I am going to attempt to put a little bit in a bowl and mix in the meds. I feel like it is going to be a huge battle to get her to accept a syringe in her mouth- oh what a sight it was this morning! I guess I need to thank God it is only once a day Thank you all very much for the advice- you are the best!
