| Sophie may have kennel cough Poor Sophie has had a rough few weeks - dog bite to the ear and now I am pretty sure that she has kennel cough now as well. I know she should go to a vet, and we have the appointment set up for tomorrow. Long story short, my mom has been in the hospital (her dogs were taken to a boarding facility at first and they both have been treated for kennel cough) and I have been staying at my parents' house to take care of the dogs now that they are home and my mom is hopefully coming home tonight. But anyway, Sophie is with my husband to keep her away from them (she was with them the first night they came home from the kennel) but I have our car. So unfortunately, our means of transportation and Sophie are in different towns that are about 45mins apart... When we took my parents' dog to their vet he told us not to worry about Sophie, that since she won't be around other dogs right now that it is best to let it take its course naturally. Well...she has been coughing since last Monday and while it isn't often and a lot, it is wet and you can hear the congestion when she sleeps or buries things (she has a little grunt/snort), so enough is enough, I shoudn't have trusted my mom's vet and taken her straight to our vet like my instincts told me to. Anyway, since it has already been 10 days and she is still coughing, not as much as she was before, but she is still doing it....it has definitely been long enough to assume that she definitely needs to go. Her symptoms aren't cut and dry - she doesn't cough when you push her throat and she is still eating and drinking - but she seems to be sleeping more than usual - but she sleeps a lot normally. Her cough sounds like she is gagging on something and happens when she gets excited. Her nose and eyes are a little runnier than usual. We take her into the bathroom when one of us is showering and the steam helps clear it up a little bit. My mom's vet just said to give her some honey for her throat and let it run its course on its own. She is too little and it is too cold for us to let this run any further as I don't want it to turn into something worse. Does anyone have any suggestions as to medications to avoid? My vet is very open to us suggesting something different if we aren't comfortable with what she wants to give us. |

| Well, it is best that they are seen to rule out serious issues (and absolutely necessary now that there is wet congestion). Some vets aren't going to want to see them right away though because it's self limiting (if no secondary infection) and it's a good way to spread germs. So if there was a known exposure, it isn't totally wrong for them to have you wait if out. Now an antibiotic will likely be given to treat any secondary infection present. Depending on age, this could include zythromax, doxycycline, cephalexin, etc. They may also give or have you buy cough syrup. I'd take their recommendation on that. My vet uses Robitussin. Worked well for my pups.

| She is 2.5 years old and my parents' dogs have been taking doxycycline and had prednisone for 3 days and they are no longer coughing. Their anti-biotics are finished tomorrow and they are completely back to normal, still have to wait a week before they are allowed around other dogs though. I guess it makes sense for us to wait since we know what it probably is and the office has to keep the other animals safe as well. I just don't like how after 10 days it went from dry cough to congested. She never snores, but lately you can hear her across the room most of the night...my husband calls her a baby bulldog right now. She doesn't cough as much as other dogs I have heard with kennel cough but you can hear it in her chest. I hate that I haven't been with her this week though, but tonight when she sees me and gets excited I should be able to record the noise she is making to make it easier for the vet. |

| Absolutely. If she is sounding congested, she needs to be seen. Just that the vet knew it is like KC, so that's probably why they didn't think it was urgent before. Now there is definitely reason to go in. Now, because there may be a secondary issue starting, pneumonia is always a concern. So best to get in and see if it's time for antibiotics.
